Cardinal Mahony grateful LA will have Hispanic archbishop

After the announcement from the Vatican this morning that Archbishop Jose H. Gomez of San Antonio will be made the coadjutor archbishop of the Los Angeles Archdiocese, Cardinal Roger Mahony stated that he is “grateful to God for this gift of a Hispanic Archbishop.”

In a statement released on Tuesday, the cardinal emphasized that because “Los Angeles is the largest Hispanic Diocese or Archdiocese in the United States,” he had told the Vatican that he believed “that the Archdiocese of Los Angeles deserved to have a Hispanic as the next Archbishop.”

“I welcome Archbishop Gomez to the Archdiocese of Los Angeles with enthusiasm and personal excitement,” the cardinal added.

Archbishop Gomez, who served as Archbishop of San Antonio until today, will work alongside Cardinal Mahony in L.A., taking his position when he retires on Feb. 27, 2011.

“I have known Archbishop Gomez since he became Auxiliary Bishop of Denver in 2001, and subsequently, the Archbishop of San Antonio in 2004,” Cardinal Mahony noted. “Over the years he has been a most effective leader working with priests serving the Spanish-speaking communities across the country, and his leadership in proclaiming the dignity and rights of our immigrant peoples has helped motivate many people to advocate for our immigrants.”

The cardinal also spoke about Archbishop Gomez's affiliation with Opus Dei.

“Some may conclude that since Archbishop Gomez was ordained a priest of Opus Dei he must be 'conservative.' In fact, these labels of 'conservative' and 'liberal' are really unhelpful in the life of the Church,” he stressed.

“We are all called to a deep relationship with Jesus Christ, and I can attest that both of us share a common commitment to Christ and to the Church, and that both of us are interested in promoting the teachings of the Church fully as well as bringing the words and example of Christ to today’s society and world,” the prelate added. “I consider ourselves to share an equal commitment to the continued growth of the Church here in Los Angeles.”

Cardinal Mahony concluded his remarks by extending “the most warm and cordial bienvenida” to Archbishop Gomez  and by asking him “to experience and appreciate the wonderful, dynamic Local Church of Los Angeles.”

Really? Especially the time you were onstage at the LaRaza rally with Mayor Villa- LaRaza and kept waving the mexican flag in front of the “si si puede” crowd at McArthur Park? And that wasn’t liberal for ya? I’m pretty sure my church contributions to my parish pays for the child molestations scandal in the L.A. archdiocese from which Mahoney was fully aware of and didn;t do anything to stop.

Keep us informed as things get cleaned up. I understand that Archbishop Gomez is quite quiet in the way he does things too. People don’t even realize what is happening until it is all done!

I could care less that LA now has a Frijolero as their Archbishop, but do care (for the sake of Catholics close to me who live there) if he is the political prostitute that Phoney Mahoney was.

We’ll see how he is about the issue of Amnesty specifically. One thing I’ve found is, although there is NO Opus Dei position on immigration, most of the members I know are on the left when it comes to legalizing Latino immigrants, and consider Latinos to be a “blessing” to the United States.

An archbishop has zero authority over immigration. Which is fortunate, since he seems clueless about the subject. He does not seem to understand that the illegals do not want to become American. They see us as Mexico with flush-toilets.

What the Archbishop will have authority over is the heretical zombies grinding away in his chanceries and the golfing (or rolfing) priests in his parishes. And this is good. Inasmuch as he has a long public track record and is Opus Dei, you can be 98 percent sure of his orthodoxy. If he is politically smart, he may succeed is flushing some of the poofs, Satanists, and time-servers in his realm and retrieving the sound, valiant priests whom Mahony has banished to the dark corners of his territory and putting them in positions of influence.

The ironic thing is, they could have been a blessing, but have opted to join the Grand Alliance of the "Oppressed" (along with wealthy white homosexuals) and, like Black Protestants, have adopted radical left positions on every issue under the sun--issues far removed from issues of race and poverty.

I don't understand this alliance. Surely Black and Hispanic voters hear the constant pairing of their own situation with that of the "gays." Yet they never object. It's like there's some bizarre secret "treaty" that's been signed wherein Blacks and Hispanics agree to make common cause with homosexuals and homosexuals agree to confine their confrontations to "rednecks." It simply doesn't make any sense!

Shoot, I don't understand how the "theocratic" moslems and their push for sharia fits so easily with the "gay" agenda. What is it that everyone else knows that we crackers don't???

Midtown Center in Chicago. It was the numeraries who I was quoting. There is no “Opus Dei position on immigration” as you know (and I had mentioned earlier). It has been my experience, however, that the membership views mass Latino immigration as a positive for the United States.

Are you aware that Archbishop Gomez is a naturalized citizen himself. He went through the steps to become a citizen of the United States. That is what he believes in. Read the links that are posted about him. He is a good and decent man.
