A group of more than 100 prominent Christians ranging from evangelical minister Jim Wallis on the political left to...Chuck Colson on the right released a document Thursday calling for an end to the fight club tone of the national political discourse.
...the "Civility Covenant"...says...churches have too often "reflected the political divisions of our culture rather than the unity we have in the body of Christ."

...the covenant...has 114 signatories from a broad swath of Christian traditions, including the president of the National Association of Evangelicals, the head of the National Hispanic Christian Leadership Conference and the general superintendent of the Assemblies of God...
The list...includes...conservative Christian leaders like Harry Jackson -- who led the unsuccessful fight against gay marriage in Washington -- to Morna Murray, president of the progressive Catholics in Alliance for the Common Good, which is close to the Obama White House.

Quoting the New Testament, the new covenant urges Christians to "put away from you all bitterness and wrath and anger and wrangling and slander, together with all malice, and be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ has forgiven you."
"We owe a certain responsibility to each other as believers," said Colson, an influential evangelical Christian voice. "This doesn't mean I haven't challenged some people's theology. But the document says we're not going to challenge each other's motives or engage in ad hominem attacks."

...Wallis organized a boycott of Beck's show but says the timing of the covenant's release is incidental.
Colson said the document "wouldn't apply to Glenn Beck because we're talking about the conversation in the family of believers ... Glenn Beck is a Mormon."
Many Christians don't consider Mormons...to be Christians, though Mormons consider themselves Christian...

There IS a time for war and a time for peace....Ecc.
Hey I did listen to Becks video......I do think Beck had an encounter with God and perhaps Christ, though he wasn't clear about Christ. His focus in the video was not on his church...rather more of the encounter with God and that “something” happened.
I think Beck started out seeking a church but at some point began seeking God and meaning business with Him. (I'd like to hear what he thinks of Christ.) I say this because I do know that God responds to a seeking heart...and He will meet them any where and anytime that He knows that persons Heart is sensitive to Him. I believe Beck has a relationship with God which is not dependent on the Morman Church.
He went to that church because his daughter, who is ill, felt warm there and she wanted to return there. His baptism also seems to have been meaningful to him...again it was the act to Beck not the church.
I believe the morman church indeed does mislead and their are many deceptions about it...but Beck certainly appears to have had an encounter with God...and seems to maintain it.
If Beck has used the Book of Mormon rather than cross checking with the scriptures to see the errors then it's understandable why he is still there. I also think his needs were so great, having lost so much, that the fellowship and belonging someplace likely hold him there.
He needs of course to go further and when and if he does he will see the truth. But he is surely on the way. Lets hope he'll research further the doctrines in Mormonism and learn the history as well...then he will determine hopefully he needs more.
He isn't at the gate. He has been operating well within the gate for decades. And now he's dressing like us, walking like us and talking a lot like us.
Beck maybe misguided in his beliefs. Wallis is a child of the devil.
We owe a certain responsibility to each other as believers," said Colson, an influential evangelical Christian voice.
Wallis don't believe Chucky baby.
And I am going to question Chuck's motives in signing such a piece of heresy.
To quote the actual scripture:
Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness?
Cheery-O Chuck!
We can't judge the inner heart-motive
In your case you motive is not inner heart. It is quite out in the open for all to see.
That's why I try to post their OWN ORGANIZATIONS words all the time.
on't always do it; but their own stuff is MUCH more interesting than anything I could type.
Someone CLAIMS to be Catholic, but favors allows abortion; well...
Choose ye this day whom ye will serve.
As for my family, we choose the Lord. It's even in the Constitution, this right of religious freedom, not to have it defined by you or any other person on a internet forum. You don't have to agree with me, but I have a right to worship God and His Christ the way I have been led by the spirit of truth.
So does Glenn Beck.
Have a great weekend.
Acts 4
32 And the multitude of them that believed were of one heart and of one soul: neither said any of them that bought of the things which he possessed was his own; but they had all things common.
33 And with great power gave the apostles witness of the resurrection of the Lord Jesus: and great grace was upon them all.
34 Neither was there any among them that lacked: for as many as were possessors of lands or houses sold them, and brought the prices of the things that were sold,
35 And laid them down at the apostles feet: and distribution was made unto every man according as he had need.
36 And Joses, who by the apostles was surnamed Barnabas, (which is, being interpreted, The son of consolation,) a Levite, and of the country of Cyprus,
37 Having land, sold it, and brought the money, and laid it at the apostles feet.
Acts 5
1 But a certain man named Ananias, with Sapphira his wife, sold a possession,
2 And kept back part of the price, his wife also being privy to it, and brought a certain part, and laid it at the apostles feet.
3 But Peter said, Ananias, why hath Satan filled thine heart to lie to the Holy Ghost, and to keep back part of the price of the land?
4 Whiles it remained, was it not thine own? and after it was sold, was it not in thine own power? why hast thou conceived this thing in thine heart? thou hast not lied unto men, but unto God.
5 And Ananias hearing these words fell down, and gave up the ghost: and great fear came on all them that heard these things.
6 And the young men arose, wound him up, and carried him out, and buried him.
7 And it was about the space of three hours after, when his wife, not knowing what was done, came in.
8 And Peter answered unto her, Tell me whether ye sold the land for so much? And she said, Yea, for so much.
9 Then Peter said unto her, How is it that ye have agreed together to atempt the Spirit of the Lord? behold, the feet of them which have buried thy husband are at the door, and shall carry thee out.
10 Then fell she down straightway at his feet, and yielded up the ghost: and the young men came in, and found her dead, and, carrying her forth, buried her by her husband.
11 And great fear came upon all the church, and upon as many as heard these things.
Read the text!!
3 But Peter said, Ananias, why hath Satan filled thine heart to lie to the Holy Ghost, and to keep back part of the price of the land?
The text is clear. They covenanted to give all things they had to Peter, and kept some back, lying about it. They were then killed by God, after Peter said it would happen.
You guys make such a big issue about how we are commanded to tithe ten percent as part of the covenants we make, yet when these early saints did 100 percent, it doesn’t even phase you.
Frankly, it blows my mind.
It looks like mostly hot air to me. No one of the signers speaks for me in any way. No real surprises on the list of signers.
(Well, one surprise. If he's who I think he is, he's a local-ish guy, a Word-Faith preacher who doesn't believe in original sin, and a NAR so-called "apostle", who's now appears to be getting credibility with evangelicals. Great, just great.)
You cannot say each to his own and be a Chrisitan...Christ never said this.... If we held to that statement many would never turn to Christ...in fact they would be lost.

AMEN!
I stand by my statement....nice try though but still a twist in the wind....
Seeing folks using apples to explain oranges blows mine as well.
The text is clear.
Yes; it is: for the LYING; NOT the witholding.
Actually, I rethought this wording based upon your post, and you're right! (Good to challenge Chuck!)
I think when the fruit smells rotten, we can question/challenge motives -- but those are still best rendered in "question" form/format. I think if we smell rotten fruit we can assume its presence; but, how we go about manifesting it is the key...I think we can assume questionable motives without automatically publicly presuming that we're mind-readers & we know all or most of what's going on inside of others. (That's where we all often overreach)
Still, I hit the link Lee N. Field provided as to the text of this covenant (lacks Lee) in post #173...and Colson didn't frame the language in the covenant well in this CNN interview...the covenant language doesn't mention not challenging others motives, but rather to not impugn their motives...there's a difference. Here's the exact language:
We pledge that when we disagree, we will do so respectfully, without impugning the others motives...
Well, the timing certainly does seem strange. (It's not like there was this sudden avalanche of incivility in the past two weeks compared to what's been going on for years)
And that's where the crafters of this document need to be asked: What was the motivation of the timing of this document?
I think it's fair game to simply ask, like a journalist would in an interview, vs. automatically presuming to know everything that contributed to the timing of this doc.
The journalist in this piece did ask if the timing was related to the Glenn Beck comment about "social justice," which riled Wallis' feathers. But he didn't ask if the timing was related to the healthcare passage and the flak that the lamestream denominations are starting to receive for supporting it.
I anticipated you would use these scripture references....very common use in the occults, cults and false religions....Jim Jones used them too...it is a miss use of scripture.
