Actually, no.

The patches were woven in the Middle Ages.

The weave of the cloth proper is consistent with a twill of the Middle East at the time of Christ.

There’s no need to worship the thing in order to respect what it represents.

No, it had been placed over his head/face while he was on the cross....after he was dead, of course. It was more of a ‘vanity’ and was a common practice at the time.

That said, you are correct that you can still see, after those horrid suicide bombings in Israel, Jewish clerics mopping up the blood of the dead victims. This isn’t just a “cleaning”; all of the person’s tissue is to be buried with the body. However, the Cloth of Oviedo wasn’t used for such a purpose; just a covering (much as you see in our culture, how we cover the face of someone who passes in hospital, etc.). It was to be buried with him when the proper preparations/burial processes were to be completed since it did contain blood (tissue). It was found in the tomb accordingly.

I’m just saying that, for reasons stated above, I don’t believe it was over or around his face/head or in any way “within” the Shroud during the energetic event that formed the Shroud image.

Okay - thanks! I know that non-shroud related topics talk about how to explain the two pieces of cloth found in the tomb. I had only heard of the jaw wrapping one. Your hypthosis also makes sense. (Esp. the part about how they were rushed and couldn’t prepare the body properly.)

Yep...another cash cow for “science” to study and keep the Gov. flowing cash to their institutes of study. Sort of like climate warming...go to to get those grants.

I imagine this cloth may end up in the catholic church somewhere with the other relics etc., they do have an enormous storage type facilities for this sort of stuff. I do wonder how much tax money has already been spent on making this into something....well at most to speculate over. Might have been better spent insuring someone so they could live than over a burial cloth...sad really.

Let's assume for the moment that the Shroud does date back to the time of Jesus and it really does have an imprint of a man on it. Where is the evidence that this is ACTUALLY the face of Jesus? Why could this not be the Peter...or John...or perhaps Fred the Samaritan?

I respect a church. I try to dress and behave appropriately when at church. Yet if the building committee voted tomorrow that they want to tear down the structure and build a new one, I wouldn't quibble based upon what it represents-the house of God. So why should I accord a piece of cloth more honor or dignity then the church building?

The Shroud represents nothing more then what we want to give it. And Christians want to see and promote something that simply is not there. It's no more that the golden calf that Aaron built and told the people, “This is your god that led you out of Egypt.” We are to worship God in Spirit and in truth...yet just like the Israelites before the fiery, thundering Mount Sinai we STILL want to see something a bit more tangible.

Interesting artifact.

However we are reminded by YHvH:

Exodus 20:4 "You shall not make for yourself an idol,
or any likeness of what is in heaven above
or on the earth beneath or in the water under the earth.

I agree it should not have inordinate attention.

However, there’s a chance it may . . . verify, in a sense . . . perhaps even a scientific sense . . . the Resurrection. That would be more than a little interesting to some of us.

Romans 1:4-5
“And Jesus Christ our Lord was shown to be the Son of God when God powerfully raised him from the dead by means of the Holy Spirit. Through Christ, God has given us the privilege and authority to tell Gentiles everywhere what God has done for them, so that they will believe and obey him, bringing glory to his name.”

“...powerfully raised him from the dead...” God doing this through the power of the Holy Spirit.

I’ll bet that was some blast. So, could it have left some kind of imprint on a cloth wrapping the body...probably.

Is the shroud real? Don’t know. I’d like it to be, because I’d love to look upon the face of our Lord.

But, I go back to the scripture above, and right there is the only truth I need. Raised by God through the power of the Holy Spirit. Amen and Amen.
