I write today for my son and other young men about what an extraordinary privilege it is to be an Aaronic Priesthood holder. You have been ordained and given POWER, by someone with authority from God, to act in Gods name on the earth today.
You know all about superheroes. Its fun to watch movies and see the powers superheroes like Spiderman, Batman and Superman have. But thats just the movies and not real.
However, from the moment you are ordained a deacon in the Aaronic Priesthood, you are given more power than all the superheroes in the world combined -- and it is REAL power. Its a special power, of course, and it can only be used if you are living the commandments.
Its also a power that lets you help others, but you cant use it for selfish reasons: to get things or do things that Heavenly Father doesnt want done. However, when you use your priesthood power righteously, wonderful things will happen and you will see miracles, from simple to awe-inspiring, in your life.
What does it mean to be ordained to the Aaronic Priesthood? First, it means God has enormous confidence in you. Imagine a powerful king who rules over millions of people telling you he trusts you so much that he is going to give you his signet ring.
When you have his ring you have the authority and power to do things in the kings name. That king would have to love you very much and he would have to have enormous faith that you will make good decisions and do what is right.
But this is not a make believe situation; its real. Priesthood is the greatest power in the universe and our Heavenly king, God, will trust you with his power throughout your life as long as you remain worthy. He expects you to be sober, to keep the commandments, share the gospel and use priesthood power to help and serve others.
Second, more than the fact that you have power, being an Aaronic Priesthood holder means that you have duties and responsibilities given you. God requires you to do certain things and you will answer to him somedayabout how well you did what he asked you to do.
You can still have fun and enjoy life, but he wants you to be serious in representing him, honoring the priesthood and setting a righteous example for others.
A good way to understand what it means when you are ordained to the Aaronic Priesthood is to consider some of the responsibilities and blessings that come to you as a deacon, a teacher and a priest. All young men ordained to the Aaronic Priesthood hold the keys of the ministering of angels.
This is a literal promise and at times angels with attend and watch over you although you will not necessarily see them.
As a deacon you are to pass the sacrament, watch over the church, bear testimony of Christ, warn, expound, exhort and invite all members to come unto Christ. To do this you will need to keep the commandments, and carefully study the scriptures and the teachings of todays prophets and apostles.
You are charged with helping the bishop by gathering fast offerings, caring for those in need, fellowshipping quorum brethren, and strengthening and uplifting the members.
When you become a teacher, under the direction of your priesthood leaders, you are to prepare the sacrament and are charged with speaking well of others and strengthening members by encouraging them to live the commandments.
You too warn, expound, exhort, teach and invite all to come unto Christ by home teaching, speaking in church, being an example of righteousness and integrity, and speaking kindly about others.
A priest adds to these duties baptizing and administering the sacrament. He is commissioned to visit members in their homes and to urge them to pray and attend to their family duties.
Isnt it amazing how much the Lord trusts the young men in the church and how much he depends on them?
When Wilford Woodruff went on his first mission, he "went out as a priest, and my companion as an elder, and we traveled thousands of miles, and had many things manifested to us.
"I desire to impress upon you the fact that it does not make any difference whether a man is a priest or an apostle, if he magnifies his calling. A priest holds the key of the ministering of angels. Never in my life, as an apostle, as a seventy, or as an elder, have I ever had more of the protection of the Lord than while holding the office as a priest.
"The Lord revealed to me by visions, by revelations, and by the Holy Spirit, many things that lay before me.
What a wonderful honor it is to hold the Aaronic Priesthood and how important it is to do everything in your power to always be worthy of this great privilege given you by God.
Here is MORMONism’s own creed:
- - - - - -
Yep, it bears little resemblance to the Gospel of Grace found in the Bible.
You all are disagreeing about how many angels fit on the head of a pin, as usual.
- - — - -
It is not that at all. For Christians it is very important to distinguish true from false faith.
Mormons want to claim to be part of the Christian faith but have spent much of their time denouncing us and teaching opposite things.
It would be like Muslims suddenly wanting to be called Jews (the only ‘true’ Jews) and not change their beliefs or practices AT ALL. Would you not oppose that?
I believe what the Bible says about Jesus Christ
- - - - - -
Then WHY are you still MORMON???
I pray that you don’t believe what the LDS believe, but I know what the LDS teach and that is NOT what is in the Bible.
Completely different Christ.
Why don’t you elaborate on what you believe if it is different from what the LDS believe. I would be interested in that. You never list your beliefs, it is always the same statements, your testimony. Please, tell us exactly what you think is right and wrong about Mormon doctrine.
Then why don’t your missionaries leave professing Christians alone and stay away from our porches and doorbells.
Why is this offensive to you?
- - - - -
Because the Jesus the LDS proclaim is NOT the Jesus of the Bible! The LDS hijack the Biblical Christ, twist Him around into something unrecognizable then have the GALL to tell us we are ‘apostates’ and they are the only ‘true’ Christians.
If you love Jesus like you say you do, then why, WHY are you in a demonically inspired cult?!?!
Do you think Jesus is proud of you for thinking you can ‘work’ your way to godhood? Really?
I worry about that shout if Sandy shouts what she is writing on FR (with the exception I am a mormon), they may boot her out.
- - - - - -
You are probably right. Shawn McCraney wrote in his book “Born Again Mormon” how when he started talking about Jesus and not ‘the church’ or ‘the prophet’, the LDS thought he was crazy and an apostate.
If God chooses to reveal anything to us by whatever means, we can rest assured that it will give no advantage to Satan.
- - - - - -
Your logic is faulty, since you assume it comes from God. If it doesn’t come from God, it can give an advantage to Satan.
There is no proof that what Smith brought forth is from God and plenty of evidence that it did not.
awww....I love you too, nana. :)
It doesn’t help ME, and I guess it doesn’t help YOU either. But at least it lets me know that your religion wishes you to argue it. :)
I would oppose that. And I would know they were not Jews. Because they are not practicing Judaism. But this already exists. There are various factions calling themselves Jews that have very little Judaism in them. I don't like their ways. So you do have a point. Still, if you have two groups and each finds the other less than itself, you don't get much accomplished because each side has their heart and soul invested in their own beliefs.
It's like this:
1st person: I love the Cat. Its tail is so bushy. Every day I brush that wondrous bushy tail. I am the true cat lover.
2nd person: No, you do NOT love the Cat. The only way to love the Cat is to pet her head. Every day I pet that beautiful head. The tail is not important.
#3rd person: I see that neither of you have a clue about what being a true Cat Lover is. You are lost in unimportant pursuits. A true cat lover, like myself, knows that the secret is in the purr. If you can make the cat purr, it doesn't matter how. The tail, the head, the body. It's all about making the cat purr. Anyone saying that anything else matters is a fraud.
You know what I mean?
What? Does that include the belief that Jesus died for our sins & not just those who would become members of the Mormon church -- like Lds apostle Jeffrey R. Holland taught: ...they are not freely and universally given a reprieve of their own sins unless they pledge faith in Christ, repent of those sins, are baptized in his name, receive the gift of the Holy Ghost and confirmation into Christ's church.
Secondly, do you believe it's OK to pray directly to Jesus like the Bible says (Acts 7:59)?
Do you believe Jesus created Lucifer, like the Bible says? (Col. 1:16; John 1:3)
Do you believe Jesus was divine from eternity past, like the Bible says? (John 1:1, 18; Micah 5:2)
Which do you believe -- John 1:14 saying that Jesus was the "only begotten" Son of the Father...or D&C 76:24...which says the "inhabitants" of other "worlds" also have "begotten sons...unto God"???
Do you believe in one God, like James 2:19 says? Is Jesus that God, or is He a second God? When OT verses say that Jehovah is Elohim, do you believe that?
Are there multiple names under heaven in which people of other planets can be saved; or is Jesus' Name the only One under heaven? Is there salvation in anyone else besides Jesus? (Brigham Young taught there was). So who do you believe, Brigham or the Bible? Brigham also taught Joseph Smith was co-consenter with Jesus about people being allowed into heaven. So, again, do you believe Acts 4:12 and 1 Tim. 2:5 -- or Brigham Young?
Disagreements on MAJOR points of doctrine (we are not talking minor points) like the person work and nature of Jesus is not an unimportant persuit.
I agree that sometimes Christians get focused on minor differences and that bugs me. But the differences between Mormonism and Traditional Christianity are as wide as the differences between Islam and Judaism. Seriously.
I used to be Mormon, now I am not. I understand the wide gap more than others and also see how the legalism is soul destroying.
Do you see where I am coming from?
Yes, I see where you are coming from.
I have Mormon friends and they are wonderful people, so I just assumed that everyone’s own ways suit them best. I really don’t know too much about it.
Well if you are ever interested, I can give you a list of resources (both sides).
I will say that from a sociological standpoint, Mormonism is fascinating.
while you ALSO...
...Choose the PROPHET!
"When our leaders speak, the thinking has been done. When they propose a plan--it is God's Plan. When they point the way, there is no other which is safe. When they give directions, it should mark the end of controversy, God works in no other way. To think otherwise, without immediate repentance, may cost one his faith, may destroy his testimony, and leave him a stranger to the kingdom of God."
Ward Teachers Message, Deseret News, Church Section p. 5, May 26, 1945
Also included in the Improvement Era, June 1945 (which was the official church magazine before the Ensign)
"Always keep your eye on the President of the church, and if he ever tells you to do anything, even if it is wrong, and you do it, the lord will bless you for it but you don't need to worry. The lord will never let his mouthpiece lead the people astray."
LDS President Marion G. Romney (of the first presidency), quoting LDS President (and prophet) Heber J. Grant "Conference Report" Oct. 1960 p. 78
"The Lord Almighty leads this Church, and he will never suffer you to be led astray if you are found doing your duty. You may go home and sleep as sweetly as a babe in its mother's arms, as to any danger of your leaders leading you astray, for if they should try to do so the Lord would quickly sweep them from the earth."
Brigham Young, Journal of Discourses, Vol. 9, p. 289, 1862.
"When the Prophet speaks the debate is over".
N. Eldon Tanner, August Ensign 1979, pages 2-3
"I sat in this tabernacle some years ago as President Joseph Fielding Smith stood at this pulpit. It was the general priesthood meeting of April 1972, the last general conference before President Smith passed away. He said: 'There is one thing which we should have exceedingly clear in our minds. Neither the President of the Church, nor the First Presidency, or the united voice of the First Presidency and the Twelve will ever lead the Saints astray or send forth counsel to the world that is contrary to the mind and will of the lord'."
L. Aldin Porter of the Presidency of the First Quorum of Seventies (Ensign, Nov. 1994, p. 63)
"Follow your leaders who have been duly ordained and have been publicly sustained, and you will not be led astray."
Boyd K. Packer (General Conference, Oct. 1992; Ensign, Nov. 1992)
"The Lord will never permit me or any other man who stands as President of this Church to lead you astray."
President Wilford Woodruff (considered scripture as it is canonized at the end of the D&C)
Yup: the blind men an the elephant.
When someone ELSE comes along and says to your cat people, "This DOG is much better than your cat - no matter HOW you treat it.", then we tend to have a problem.
That ain't SCRIPTURE!!!
--MormonDude(Gotcha; foul ANTI!)
This is something that those of us who are ANTI-mormonISM will agree with.
It's the THEOLOGY of their RELIGION that is being exposed more fully in these threads.
We have folks here on FR who WERE Mormon at one time, that have SEEN things the MORMONism wishes would stay tucked away, and that LEARNING process was what got them out of the grasp that MORMONism has on people.
(Along with the power of prayer and the Holy Spirit's urgings.)
