In Matthew 16 Verses 13 through 17, Jesus was quizzing His disciples as to who they thought He was. In verse 16 Peter answered and said "Thou art the Christ, the Son of the Living God". In verse 17 Jesus answered and said unto him Blessed art thou Simon Bar-Jona, for flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee, but My Father which is in heaven.
So, in verse 18 Jesus was referring to revelation from God as the "Rock" on which the Church was built, not Peter himself.
Ironically, the only way one could accuse Jesus of lying is if he did mean Peter was the rock. For in the coming centuries after Peter was killed, the "gates of hell" certainly did prevail against the church. So much so that it ignited the Protestant reformation as an attempt to fix the corruption.
So, in verse 18 Jesus was referring to revelation from God as the “Rock” on which the Church was built, not Peter himself.

Typical LDS misinterpretation and twisting of scripture.
There is a play on words in the Greek that does not come through in English, the play on words is “peter” and “rock”. Furthermore, the construct in the Greek reflects back unto the word “church” not Peter or his admission.
It is NOT referring to ‘revelation’ in any way. Nor is it referring to a particular denomination. That is a twisting of the Greek word ‘ekklesia’.
The more Greek you know, the even less LDS twisting of scripture makes sense.
Protestantism is a heresy. Henry was one of the reformers who started a new church to get a divorce and steal the Churchs lands. But were not discussing the reformation.
How do you explain the other verses I cited? That the Church will always teach the Truth?
I have yet many things to say unto you, but ye cannot bear them now. Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come. John 16:12-13
But if I tarry long, that thou mayest know how thou oughtest to behave thyself in the house of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and foundation of the truth. 1Tim 3:15
Here Christ says, and Paul reaffirms, that the Church will always teach the TRUTH.
Then Jesus came to them and said, "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age." Mat 28:18-20
Again, here Jesus assures us that He is always with us, to the very end.
So Christ says that the Holy Spirit will guide the Church to always teach the Truth, and He will always be with us. Yet Mormons believe the Church almost immediately went apostasy.
