The Scenario:
Ever have one of those days when youre feeling full of energy and vigor? I mean, youre feeling just obnoxiously happy? Well, this is one of those days.
Driving home from work, you switch on the radio to see whats happening, and you tune in to a local Protestant radio station just in time to hear a preacher speaking against various Catholic doctrines concerning Mary. The show is called Pastor Bobs Bible Hour. Pastor Bob proclaims: Jesus knew Catholics would come along and begin to worship His mother and call her perpetual virgin and absurd things like that. But the Bible says: Is not this the carpenters son? Is not His mother called Mary? And are not His brethren James and Joseph and Simon and Judas? And are not all of His sisters with us? (Matt. 13:55-56a). And isnt it sad, my brothers and sisters?
Pastor Bob goes on to say: Jesus dealt with these Mary worshippers in His day. In Luke 11:27-28, the Bible says, A woman in the crowd raised her voice and said to Him, Blessed is the womb that bore You, and the breasts that You sucked! But He said, Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God and keep it!
On a normal day you would probably just listen, take a few mental notes and drive on. But not this time. Youre feeling a little bit too saucy. You take the first exit you see and head for a phone. This is just one more reason why you need to buy that cell phone youve been talking about getting.
Step One:

In reading the book of Acts, it is clear that the only person upon whom any ‘primacy’ was conferred by the apostles was James, the eldest half brother of Jesus.
Don’t you realize . . .
Mary Trumps Jesus . . . as His Mother!
/s
No, lol. Who is greater, Mary or Moses? And feel free to use the bible for the answer.
Pretty easy.
Moses.
He was God’s Friend. And, God buried him.
There’s a lot of other reasons as well.
No hint of such things with Mary in all of Scripture.
Christ made very clear Mary’s rank in the over all scheme of things when
HE
asserted that those who did the will of The Father were equal to his mother, BROTHERS AND SISTERS.
But that's so...so....Un-Catholic!
The Catholic Church does not teach that Mary is any kind of god or deity of any kind.
So where then is Mary in this eschelon? She can't be greater than Christ, since Christ is greater than Moses, and none were greater, ever, than Moses, per God. Moses has no fancy titles, doesn't have a throne and never entered into the promised land. Yet, among men, up until Christ, there were none greater.
Thank you.
lol, I’ll say some Hail Marys
wait... some Hail Moshes
That is a sentence devoid of any ascertainable standard of meaning.
Verily I say unto you, Among them that are born of women there hath not risen a greater than John the Baptist: notwithstanding he that is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he.
So now Mary, having been born before John had to be the lesser . That throne is shrinking
The incredible shrinking idol!
It would be a fair assumption that they are saying a prayer which has Mary in it. But Mary is Jesus's relative, no?
If what they are doing is condemned by your church
How can a feast to Mary be condemned by anyone even remotely Christian? These are indeed major feast days on the calendar.
I only saw that when I was done with my last post. I normally don't read ahead when I respond to a post to me. Besides, if a post is addressed to me, and has a ping list, I don't see why I should pry the poster who left out of the ping list.
If a post has substance, I believe I should be able to respond, even in the knowledge that the poster was asked to leave. I rarely post just for the benefit of the people on the Reply line.
I obviously would not perpeturate any flame wars, but I don't think my posts so far were of that nature.
If I broke any rules, I apologize and ask that the rule be explained to me.
The reason I believe that the devil tempts us using God's word is because the bible tells me so.
In this time of Lent, it is appropriate to read Jesus' temptation in the desert. Matthew 4:1-11.
The devil tempts us with our carnal weaknesses, he tempts us with our pride and ego, and thirdly he tempts using the word of God. That's why I get the Heevy Jeebies, when people claim to know they are saved. But that's just me.
When I receive a post that has substantive content, I should be free to respond to the content, quite regardless of the wishes of the poster. Further, when there is a ping list and you are on it, I cannot be asked to pick out those who do not want to read my posts. My advice would be to ask the original poster who made the decision to include you in the ping list.
I will, however, not address posts to you if you are not the one posting them and that have substantive content, now that I am aware that it is your wish.
Now regarding the Church not being a physical building, I agree. The Church, however, is something that Jesus desired to have, it is mentioned in the Scripture many times, always approvingly, so, yeah the Church is a fixture in the Christian religion. I can’t alter that even if I wanted to.
The language of Apoc. 12 is in part metaphorical but nevertheless it identifies Mary in the beginning and in the end, so we who trust the scripture just have to deal with it as written. Would you say Jesus speaks of someone other than Himself in John 10 because He says He is a door?
To be honest the answer to that question is irrelevant and doesn't affect my faith one way or another. I was born Catholic, and will forever remain Catholic because my loving Catholic mother was a beautiful example of God's love, and through God's grace my mother taught me to love and adore my God above all else. (Please don't accuse me of idol worshiping my mother, I simply love her) My mother had a true Catholic formation and was devoted to her apostolic mission to care for her family.
I thank God for my Catholic mother, and have no doubt that God gave us the gift of Mary to remind us what a perfect Christian woman is.
Mary was obedient to God no matter what. She considered herself his humble servant. She was selfless and loving. Her sufferring only brought her closer to God. I have no doubt that His message is lost on many young women today. That is why God's gift of Mary is so important. The role of motherhood in society is important in God's plan of salvation. That is very clear to me, and strange posters arguments or accusations will never change that. It just reconfirms the blessings that obviously not everyone has.
Thank God for my Catholic mother!
What you are dong, systematically, is minimizing, even trivilaizing the gospel you don't like. That part is comical. So Cana becomes not a milestone but rather a story about Jesus giving a hand to the caterer. Words of dying Christ become an economic arrangement (John was the brother of another James, by the way, not the "brother of the Lord"). Why do you bother reading the Gospels anyway? And why, do you think, St. John bothered to write both of Cana and the exchange at the Cross?
That Mary is to be venerated along with the entire Church Triumphant no one disputes.
