That’s right the early Church did not have a written Bible.

They had the BLOOD of the MARTYRS.

Think about it.

God’s complete Holy Bible is my guide . Not the traditions of fallible men.

Sola scriptura IS a tradition of fallible men.

I didn’t know this for the longest time. Our family happily eats meat free on Fridays again. I do find it a little challenging with my picky children though. :0)

The early church had the apostles themselves, preaching the word of God. They had the epistles being circulated. Also, the majority were Jewish, and if they didn’t own copies of the old Testament, they knew them. So I think their canon was pretty complete.

The Holy Bible was compiled by St. Jerome in the 4th century.

And why did the Protestants throw the books of Wisdom, Sirach, etc, in the trash can during the so-called ‘Reformation’? Was it because they bore witness to the truths of the Roman Catholic Faith and directly indicted the erroneous heresies of the Protestants?

I thought there was Divine punishement attached to tampering with the compilation of books in the Holy Bible: the Douay-Rheims Bible?

There is no future in Protestant heresy.

Convert or be Damned!!!

You people have two centuries of Catholic Witness and the Internet to research it with and if you can’t figure out the eternal truths of the Holy Catholic Church with these tools, which are only available to you in this time in history, then you are simply a bunch of imbecilic dolts.

Stupid STUPID HERESY.

Your Rick Warren Mega Church will NOT save you.

Poverty and Chastity are the keys to the Kingdom of Heaven!!

Anyone want to take a wild guess on how many American Saints there are? In four hundred years of history?

You can count them on ONE HAND.

You didn't know these were part of the King James version as late as the early part of the 19th century? Joseph Smith made extensive use of them.

I can understand that this article threatens your protestant belief system and it seems natural to quickly spit a comment such as the one you posted. But such comments can’t change the history of Christ’s Church - which was in existence long before what we know as the Bible ever existed.

I pray that you will be more open to His truth and less inclined to shut out what threatens the system you have tried to build your life upon.

Good evening.

Ya know, when the SHTF, I'll find Protestants, Episcopalians, and evangelicals of all types in my foxhole...

And probably a few Jews too.

This little online book should clear up a lot of things for you, not just about Catholics.

http://www.jesus-is-lord.com/babylons/default.htm

Classic example of fundamentalist hatred for the Catholic church.

NYer, why bother trying to reason with these heretics? Many of the fundamentalist types are too far gone. If you can read that screed he linked to without getting a headache, more power to you. The funny thing is that he probably read the whole thing and actually thinks that it presents a reasoned theological philosophy.

It would be better for Catholics to focus our efforts on restoring Christian unity with the Orthodox Churches.

If it makes you feel any better, as a non-Catholic Christian, I have been called everything from child of a demon, heretic, jack-booted home invader and rapist, to ignorant, nasty, hateful and evil on these threads through the years. And I at least try to keep my comments respectful as best as I can. The animosity goes both ways, don’t kid yourselves.

How about we agree that if you post on an open thread, something that is religion based, you take up your shield of faith and stay on subject. It does nobody any good to start a thread out on a negative note and then expect people to not let their emotions jump in. We aren’t talking about how you like your coffee here but something most people take very personally. If you want to post something to make everyone on one side all happy and smug, call it a Caucus Thread. You then won’t have to worry about contrary opinion.

Otherwise, put it on an open thread, expect disagreement, but be ready to defend your position without getting mean.
Deal???

The writer, however made no such assertion the Bible was “just a book”.

But for Catholics, the fundamentalist puts the Bible in place of the Church as his “paper pope.” Instead of a living teacher (the Church) with a book (the Bible), the fundamentalist has only a book.

I will direct you to Ephesians chapter 2.
And you hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins;
Ephesians 2:2 Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience:
Ephesians 2:3 Among whom also we all had our conversation in times past in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind; and were by nature the children of wrath, even as others.
Ephesians 2:4 But God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us,
Ephesians 2:5 Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved;)
Ephesians 2:6 And hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus:
Ephesians 2:7 That in the ages to come he might shew the exceeding riches of his grace in his kindness toward us through Christ Jesus.
Ephesians 2:8 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:
Ephesians 2:9 Not of works, lest any man should boast.
Ephesians 2:10 For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.
I understand clearly, the first two verses of this chapter. It describes me.
I have some grasp of the next two verses, because I know that God has changed me completely.
Verse 6 staggers me, and for the last 40 years I have continually prayed that God would show me what it means to be “raised and seated in the heavenly places” since I am still here, and not angelic. The best, short answer I can give is from Psalm25. The first verse starts out, “Unto Thee, O Lord, do I lift up my soul!” When I am afraid, when I have a question, when I doubt, when I sin, and in every situation, I pray that verse, “Unto Thee, O Lord, do I lift up my soul!” Keep me! Teach me! Have mercy on me! Bless me! You are my Salvation, my Sanctifier, my Healer, my Friend, my Companion, my Refuge..Everything I need for the moment, the day, for my life! And the Lord Jesus comes near and gives me what I need. He raises me up, and seats me in His Truth.
This no account, old woman is rich in Christ. God has said, “If you seek me, you will find me, if you seek me with all your heart.” Take Psalm 25 to heart..”Make me know Thy ways. Teach me Thy paths. Lead me in Thy truth, and instruct me. For Thou art the God of my salvation. On Thee do I wait all the day.”

Well, to be fair, the piece was written in 1988.
This was before even the FIRST Gulf War, and long before we all became so aware and so frustrated by the huge problem - the menace - of islam. I doubt if that reference would have seemed like such an insult in 1988.

No it doesn't.

Protestants have defined themselves as being in direct opposition to the Catholic church. The Catholic church doesn't even consider protestant denominations.

I went through twelve years of Catholic schooling and I can honestly say that protestants and/or protestant theology were never mentioned. Protestants (especially the fundamentalist types) are constantly bombarded, starting at a very young age, with anti-Catholic bigotry.

There is no Catholic response equivalent in hatefulness as the "whore of babylon" smear.

Fundamentalists take Scripture out of the context of the historical Church that wrote it, theChurch that canonized it, the Church that preserved it and that is now theChurch that teaches and the Church that interprets it.

Silly me, I had always thought that the Bible was God's word.

I am not a fundamentalist who hates the Catholic church. Most fundamentalists have retained much of the Babylonian system.

For instance, they may have rid their churches of Semiramis statues, but they still have the sign of the cross. Or they may not observe pagan Babylonian Lent, but still go full steam into Ishtar.
