The Rev. Oral Roberts, the internationally known television evangelist and faith healer who founded Oral Roberts University, died Monday in Newport Beach, Calif. He was 91.
According to a release, his son, Richard, and daughter, Roberta, were at his side. Funeral services are pending.
The often-controversial charismatic minister built Oral Roberts University, the now-closed City of Faith Medical and Research Center and the University Village Retirement Center in Tulsa.
Isn’t there a better place to trash Oral Roberts and his family than his obituary thread on a political board?
I wish no ill toward Roberts, his family, and those who loved him. But you are 100% right about him and his ministry.
I have theological issues with Oral Roberts the same as yours which I believe are legitimate but your behavior on this thread is becoming really out of line and unbecoming a believer. You are hijacking this thread which is for respect of the dead. You should start a new thread to discuss these issues and debate it.
Sorry this is not a “Devotional” or “Religious” thread and I take umbrage with devotees (i.e. cultists) trying to hijack a simple obituary and turn it into a celebration of Roberts cultic teachings.
I’ve never seen a hands-off approach on FR when a leftist dies.
Maybe you should run over here as well.

Roberts was a controversial figure within and without the Christian community. The controversy his “obituary” generates should be no more surprising than a “Michael Jackson is Dead” thread.
I don’t care what your umbrage is and your arrogance is disgusting to behold. Where is your common sense of decency?
Do you think Pelagius or Smith or Young or Koresh deserved a “common sense of decency” when they died from people who are not even commenting to their loved ones directly but on a political forum?
Who exactly is being offended here?
This guy made scores of false prophecies and destroyed the financial lives and faith of thousands if not more. Where is your common sense of outrage about that?
Freerepublic has free access to view to the public. It is quite possible for a member of the Roberts Family to view this. I admire your fervor but there is a place where we need to be civil and this is one. Your behavior will be perceived as being one of the Fred Phelps crowd. I pray you are going to have to learn this from our Lord. Nuff said!
Has he? As you say show the proof and show the financial records? And not just from one source or some ham & egg internet site? How about official law enforcement agencies for starters with legitimate complaints filed? We have to start having a real standard that we can measure for legitimacy or you can become engaged in sin of bearing false witness against your neighbor.
My great grandmother was dying of ovarian cancer.
My great grandfather took her to see Oral Roberts. Oral Roberts laid his hands upon her, and when she didn’t jump right up and dance a jig and go back to work; my great grandfather decided she was of the devil and left her to die without comfort.
Oral Roberts was a charlatan. Woe to those who believe in false prophets.
“unbecoming a believer”
Actually a believer will challenge heresy and false teachers, whether alive or dead. There are people reading this thread that need to know the truth; Oral Roberts preached “another gospel”.
That's all I remember too........
It is imperative to challenge heresy and false teachers. However some heresy hunters have also proven themselves to practice sloppy discernment themselves and make half-baked judgments without having all of the facts making themselves just as bad or if not worse than those they call heretics.
You’re right. I should have written that Oral Roberts preached a gospel that when embraced has helped to financially ruin thousands if not more. You can’t always quantify that back to one teacher (like Robert Tilton) but neither can you exaggerate the destruction the Word of Faith “gospel” has wrought to its’ adherents. I have personally seen it up front. I actually know a man who turned to criminal acts to keep up the appearance of the prosperity lifestyle.
***`I think Evelyn reflected, `because he felt there was so much healing power in that room that they could have healed a thousand people ... ***
Years go a friend of mine told me about a similar happening.
A man’s wife was sick. He prayed for her healing with all the faith he could but she died. He was devestated and wondered why his prayers had failed!
Then he realized what had really happened..(Ready for this?)
He said that somewhere, someone with MORE FAITH than he had, was praying for his wife to die!
Wow. That should be shocking but considering what goes on in the name of faith theology and charismatic Christianity, it all sounds so familiar. Thanks for sharing that story.
Go get real information from legitimate 3rd party apologetics (no ham & eggers who abound on the internet with 2nd & 3rd source which amounts to no more than hearsay or “he said she said”) with verifiable references plus any legal complaints against this ministry which can be obtained by public record in the State of Oklahoma and those who monitor religious broadcasters accountability. The days of sloppy irresponsible apologetics and heresy hunting are over.
