CatholicReference.net ^ | 12-03-09 | Fr. John Hardon's Modern Catholic Dictionary

Featured Term (selected at random):

ATTRITIONISM

The doctrine that imperfect contrition, i.e., sorrow for sin not from perfect love, is sufficient for valid absolution in the sacrament of penance. Luther (1483-1546) attacked it as "repentance of the gallows" out of fear of God. but the Council of Trent declared that attrition is a morally good preparation for the sacrament of penance.

So “attrition” is the same as “imperfect contrition”?

If perfect contrition were required for sins to be forgiven, many people would be in real trouble. I would be!

The last time I took my kids to Confession, I told my son (who is in that flippant stage, 15), “Try to generate at least imperfect contrition. Maybe you can be sorry for your sins because you looked really stupid, or because it didn’t do you any good, anyway, or because you ended up with three days of extra chores and an early bedtime!”

I wondered the same thing when I read it because it stated that attrition is a good preparation for the Sacrament of Penance.

When Perfect Contrition and Imperfect Contrtion come up on the site, I’ll be sure to post them. No doubt there!
