CHATHAM, N.J. — A priest has been found dead in a New Jersey church rectory, and investigators are treating it as a crime.
There was no word Friday afternoon on how the Rev. Ed Hinds died. The clothed body of the 61-year-old priest was found at St. Patrick's Church in Chatham in the morning.
Capt. Jeffrey Paul of the Morris County prosecutor's office tells The Star-Ledger of Newark that the area is "being treated as a crime scene."
Police have closed off a four-block area around the church. Chatham is about 10 miles west of Newark.
Hinds has been at the parish since 2003.

I think there was another one killed a few months ago
I do not know...but it’s the right neighborhood.
The article says Father was in the rectory with his dog, apparently making coffee, when he was attacked. Then no further mention of the dog. A dog will fight, bark, attack, run for help, etc, if possible to defend its master. Or maybe the dog was hurt or killed, I wish they specified.
If the dog is alive, and they have suspects (such as vagrants that have been hanging around the church, or anyone who was heard to threaten the priest, mentally ill parishioner, whatever the case may be), the dog could help identify the killer. Dogs are incredible. Put that killer in front of the dog and believe me you are going to get a strong reaction. That’s not enough for proof beyond a reasonable doubt, but certainly it could help narrow down possibilities if there are several suspects.
This is so sad. It reminds me so much of a murder in St Louis. Pastor had taken in a young person of the street to help, and he was attacked and died in the kitchen of the church. Seems like a remember he was making a peanut butter sandwich, but not sure. His wife found him.He was alive but later died.
Requiem aeternam dona ei,
Domine, et lux perpetua luceat ei.
Requiescat in pace.
Amen.
Anima eius,
et animæ omnium fidelium defunctorum,
per misericordiam Dei,
requiescant in pace.
Amen.
Unbelieveable.
Prayers for all.
Lord, thank you for your servant... who brought you to us.

I thought I’d read last night that the janitor had been arrested. I think they said they started to suspect him because he’d apparently made only a half-hearted attempt to resuscitate the priest.
I just read that link, and it seemed a gratuitous slam at Fr. Hinds for the writers to intimate that the priest and Feliciano might have had a ‘relationship’. Interesting, too, that the police never even dropped by, just to check on the priest, after that 911 call, even IF someone had answered the phone when the emergency folks called back. I don’t think it would have been too far out of their way just to double check. I’ll be they’ll start doing that from now on, just in case.
Even with near immediate care I dont think he would have survived.
NY Post says the weapon and bloody clothing was found in the janitors home.
Thanks for the ping. I was in NM over the weekend and offline.
