In many places where perpetual, or even frequent, Eucharistic Adoration has been made available, there have been great benefits.
But Richard McBrien of Notre Dame is again Eucharist Adoration. In his latest piece for the dissenting, ultra-liberal National Catholic Reporter McBrien wrote this with my emphases and comments:
... The practice of eucharistic adoration began in the 12th century, when the Real Presence of Christ was widely rejected by heretics or misunderstood by poorly educated Catholics. The church saw eucharistic adoration as a way of reaffirming its faith in the Real Presence and of promoting renewed devotion to it.
However, as time went on, eucharistic devotions, including adoration, drifted further and further away from their liturgical grounding in the Mass itself.
Notwithstanding Pope Benedict XVI’s personal endorsement of eucharistic adoration [In other words, who cares what the Pope thinks.] and the sporadic restoration of the practice in the archdiocese of Boston and elsewhere, it is difficult to speak favorably about the devotion today.
Now that most Catholics are literate and even well-educated, [In other words, Adoration is probably something only stupid people are interested in.] the Mass is in the language of the people (i.e, the vernacular), and its rituals are relatively easy to understand and follow, [Really? Ask people after Mass what the epiclesis is for? or what the Gospel reading was?] there is little or no need for extraneous eucharistic devotions. The Mass itself provides all that a Catholic needs sacramentally and spiritually. [No need for confession, either, I suppose.]
Eucharistic adoration, perpetual or not, is a doctrinal, theological, and spiritual step backward, not forward.

Catholic ping!
Given the vast tracts of dissent written by this fellow (and fellow he is who never seems to wear a collar but a business suit) why has no disciplinary action taken against him? Does a professorship provide insulation for this kind of nonsense?
Lord grant me patience. If he doesn’t believe in Eucharistic Adoration, he is free to find another church, and leave the rest of us to our worship in peace.
"Now that most Catholics are literate and even well-educated..."
Except in the president's office and theology department at Notre Dame.
Obama Adoration is OK though, right?
McBrien should go and join the Episcopalians . . . but of course then he wouldn't receive the publicity and notoriety that he obtains as a 'dissenting' 'Catholic'.
Which appears to be what he's really after.
Doubly backward
When Episcopals do it,
I would imagine...
Okay, so let’s say that your mom is in a nursing home. Once a week, on Sunday, you go to see her and she is happy.
One week you decide to see her on a Wednesday as well. She is even more happy. Does anyone think that just seeing her on a Sunday is “Good enough” so you never go another Wednesday again?
Do you love her? Do you want to let her know that “there are nine months of carrying charges you can never repay”?
McBrien either does not believe that the Eucharist is actually Our Lord or doesn’t give a rat’s behind about what Our Lord has done for him.
I’ll choose to spend the time Adoring Our Lord who did so much for me. McBrien can call me any names he wants. Doesn’t matter at all.
Frankly, it's unGodly.
Dunno 'bout him, but:
The LORD is my shepherd, I shall not want; 2 he makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside still waters; 3 he restores my soul. He leads me in paths of righteousness for his name's sake. 4 Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I fear no evil; for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff, they comfort me. 5 Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of my enemies; thou anointest my head with oil, my cup overflows. 6 Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life; and I shall dwell in the house of the LORD for ever.
Why would anyone choose to adore the Christ in his most vulnerable and fragile form at 2 am in deep prayer?
On both knees bowing deeply, reverently, humbly.
I wonder what the “step forward” is???
Yeah, the last thing we need today is something that helps folks treat the Sacrament like what it really is...
And I wonder who knows more about the faith, the average 12th century Catholic or the average US Catholic today.
Freegards
Does anyone besides the CINO’s and MSM listen to this bozo? I sure don’t think his words have any impact on faithful Catholics.
Call to Action.
Look at the guy. He - like most other CTA types, are a dwindling nnumber, slowly slipping off into the destinies they have demanded.
MCBRIEN: There is little or no need for extraneous devotions to Jesus.
exactly. Doing the work of the devil though. So I guess he’ll stick around as long as he is beneficial in promoting doubt and evil at every turn.
I have been reading this site daily for years. This is the first time I felt the need to sign up for an account and post. I am a life long catholic and recently started doing adoration once a week. I cannot believe someone would advise against this. I have felt both the grace and presence of God numerous times while doing adoration. At the very least, this is a great time to spend an hour in quiet alone - what is wrong with that?
There’s a reason ND is going down the drain - scholastically, athletically, spiritually.
