Catholic Word of the Day: EPIKLESIS/EPICLESIS. 08-03-09

Featured Term (selected at random):

EPIKLESIS/EPICLESIS

An invocation of the Holy Spirit said by the celebrant of the Mass after the words of Consecration. It occurs in all the liturgies of the East and is considered essential in the Orthodox Church to the validity of the Eucharistic sacrifice. Since the Second Vatican Council all the new canons of the Mass contain the epiklesis.

To me, as the priest invokes the Holy Spirit and makes the Sign of the Cross over the bread and wine, the epiclesis is one of the most solemn moments of the Mass. I am always awed.

Very useful Wiki article is Epiclesis

This is one of the areas where the reforms of the Second Vatican Council were salutary.

Hands outstretched, the priests symbolize the community calling down the Holy Spirit to make bread and wine become the Body and Blood of Jesus.
