The Archdiocese of Baltimore plans to investigate whether an Annapolis woman's cure from cancer was a miracle, a possible step toward sainthood for a 19th-Century priest.

Mary Ellen Heibel was treated at Johns Hopkins Hospital in 2004 and early 2005 for malignant tumors in her lungs, liver, stomach and chest. After she was diagnosed, Heibel began praying to Blessed Francis X. Seelos, and urging others to pray as well.

Heibel, whose cancer was terminal, experienced a recovery her doctors did not expect and can't explain.

I have read quite a bit about the life of this Blessed priest. It is so very inspiring and, now, hopefully this cure of cancer in the woman (who was on FOX and Friends this morning) will be attributed to him as a true miracle in the eyes of the Catholic Church. Readers might want to read more about Blessed Francis X. Seelos.

It is not known whether this patient with metastatic esophageal cancer (as Mary Ellen Heibel had) prayed to Blessed Francis X. Seelos.

Likewise, it is not known whether the chemotherapy she received at Johns Hopkins was the same as what was given in this case report.

My dear little brother had esophageal cancer that also metasticised to his liver (and lymph nodes) and we lost him when he was only 35. He had three small sons and a loving wife. Tragic and so very, very sad to watch him suffering and live only 7 months after his diagnosis. The family did everything - medically and spiritually - at the time. How I wish we/I had known of Blessed Fr. Seelos then (that was in 1993).

I am sorry for your loss. I saw 2 new patients today with esophageal cancer. Hopefully they will survive their illness.
