How Old Is Your Church?

If you are a Lutheran, your religion was founded by Martin Luther, an ex- monk of the Catholic Church, in the year 1517.

If you belong to the Church of England, your religion was founded by King Henry VIII in the year 1534 because the Pope would not grant him a divorce with the right to remarry.

If you are a Presbyterian, your religion was founded by John Knox in Scotland in the year 1560.

If you are a Protestant Episcopalian, your religion was an offshoot of the Church of England founded by Samuel Seabury in the American colonies in the 17th century.

If you are a Congregationalist, your religion was originated by Robert Brown in Holland in 1582.

If you are a Methodist, your religion was launched by John and Charles Wesley in England in 1744.

If you are a Unitarian, Theophilus Lindley founded your church in London in 1774.

If you are a Mormon (Latter Day Saints), Joseph Smith started your religion in Palmyra, N.Y., in 1829.

If you are a Baptist, you owe the tenets of your religion to John Smyth, who launched it in Amsterdam in 1605.

If you are of the Dutch Reformed church, you recognize Michaelis Jones as founder, because he originated your religion in New York in 1628.

If you worship with the Salvation Army, your sect began with William Booth in London in 1865.

If you are a Christian Scientist, you look to 1879 as the year in which your religion was born and to Mrs. Mary Baker Eddy as its founder.

If you belong to one of the religious organizations known as 'Church of the Nazarene," "Pentecostal Gospel." "Holiness Church," "Pilgrim Holiness Church," "Jehovah's Witnesses," your religion is one of the hundreds of new sects founded by men within the past century.

If you are Catholic, you know that your religion was founded in the year 33 by Jesus Christ the Son of God, and it is still the same Church.

I know nothing about a 2 1/2 year old thread...I was responding to post 187 on this thread.

It's interesting to look in the phone book and see how many churches have gone out of business in the last two and a half years. For others, it may have ended in the doubling or tripling of their life span.

Have you really looked at the Crusades and what really happened? It wasn’t all the doing of the Catholic Church, but rather some very enthusiastic individuals opposed to the Moslem takeover of Europe, etc. Yes, it did go overboard, but the Catholic Church has apologized for that I believe.

this thread was a LONG time ago...but Obama just reinvented the Crusades and as far as he'd concerned...the Christians should be really ashamed!!!!

Where's Charles Martel when we really need him????? and why didn't the original Crusaders at leaset have napalm if not nukes?????

It is not accurate. All Christian churches trace their founding to 33AD.

Essentially true in that all bona fide New Testament churches were by definition founded in communion with the one holy catholic apostolic church which the LORD Jesus Christ founded upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets with Himself as the chief cornerstone. However there is no scriptural evidence that all the communities that call themselves "Christian churches" are, in fact, these churches. The concept of genuine or bona fide churches belonging to the one holy catholic church is clearly laid out in Acts and Revelation, and their origin is historically apostolic.

One could argue that one's community is historically apostolic but the burden of proof is on the claimant, much as the Gospels of Matthew and Luke laid claim to the geneaologies to establish the line of the Messiah.

Then had the churches rest throughout all Judaea and Galilee and Samaria, and were edified; and walking in the fear of the Lord, and in the comfort of the Holy Ghost, were multiplied.

The mystery of the seven stars which thou sawest in my right hand, and the seven golden candlesticks. The seven stars are the angels of the seven churches: and the seven candlesticks which thou sawest are the seven churches.

He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches; He that overcometh shall not be hurt of the second death.

Acts, Catholic chapter nine, Protestant verses twenty six to thirty one,
Revelation, Catholic chapter one, Protestant verse twenty,
Revelation, Catholic chapter two, Protestant verse eleven,

I believe infant Baptism derives directly from Jews presenting their 8 day old babies in the Temple for God’s Blessing and Thanking God for the baby.
