It's interesting to compare the Marian apparitions to those Joe Smith experienced in his "sacred grove." In both cases, the resulting spiritual community combines apparent wholesomeness and weirdness. In both cases, an alternate focus of devotion seeks to foreground / upstage God.
God's Chinese Son also experienced mystical visions, and catalyzed a social upheaval that claimed around 20 million lives in the 19th century.
