Pius V was also very involved with evangelization, and gave the Spanish great encouragement in evangelizing the New World. My town, St Augustine, was founded the year before he was elected, and we have a mural in the Cathedral that shows Pius V sending a letter to the representative of our first governor, Menendez de Aviles, encouraging him to evangelize the Indians and to have the new town of San Agustin live a good Catholic life that would be a model to the Indians. He was a friend of St Francis Borgia, general of the Jesuits, and was instrumental in getting the Jesuits to the new lands.
There are several churches and schools in Florida named after Pius V, but I doubt that most Floridians even know who he was or realize how important he was in establishing the Church in what is now the US.
Interesting!!
Dedication to the Blessed Virgin Mary and the Rosary also.
Glad to hear of this. Oregon has such murals in their State Capitol earing images of Lewis Clark and also of some of the early settlers here.
**”The Council of Trent decreed the publication of a perfected and uniform Missal for everyone. What did Pius V do? He took the Missal of the Curia in use in Rome and many other places and perfected it extending it to the whole Church but preserving rites that were more than two hundred years old. Nothing new, therefore, was introduced by the reform of St. Pius V. A uniform editing was undertaken on the Missal and the occasion was used to get rid of certain innovations that had crept in over the centuries.”**
1962 Missal is based on this as far as I know.
