The Aramaic name of the place near Jerusalem where Pontius Pilate had his judgment seat. St. John identifies this as the site where Jesus was brought before Pilate to be condemned to death (John 9:13). (Etym. Aramaic gabbeta, height, knob; the name of the place called in Greek lithostr_tos, a flagstone pavement.)
I’m trying to remember if the actual word “Gabbatha” is in any of the NAB translations, or if the scholars didn’t think we could handle the word and changed it to “Stone Pavement.” (Which I know is in at least one account of the Passion of Christ.)

Catholic Word of the Day Ping!
Please send me a FReepmail if you would like to be on this Ping List.
Thanks to Norman Bates who posted the Catholic Word of the Day on Saturday.
I was helping to cater a wedding reception for 160.
It’s John 19:13, not chapter 9.
The original Greek identifies the term as Hebrew and translates it for the Greek-speaking reader. The Greek more or less means 'a layer of stone' - i.e. a stone pavement. Somebody who speaks Hebrew will have to opine on "Gabbatha".
The mistake must be on the Fr. Hardon site. I’ll see if there is a ‘contact us’.
