Hugh Hewitt, a political pundit radio personality, wants the Mormon presidential election runner Mitt Romney in the Whitehousevery badly. He casts his pre-election vote in writing A Mormon in the Whitehouse? (Regnery, 2007). In defense of Romney, Hewitt also defends Mormonism better than some Latter-day Saints (LDS). This is strange for a Presbyterian, as what Hewitt claims for himself. It is possible and logically consistent that Hewitt could defend Romney as a republican without defending Mormonism, but he chooses otherwise. The reason that I find this strange is that Joseph Smith, the founder of Mormonism, claimed that God appeared to him and told him that Hughs church, Presbyterianism, is not true. Gods official statement on Presbyterians is found in Mormon scripture. To remain faithful to the prophet Joseph Smith, Romney cannot believe other that what Joseph Smith wrote in his scripture, I have learned for myself that Presbyterianism is not true (Pearl of Great Price, Joseph SmithHistory 1:20).
Is Hewitt slipping in his faith? Or is he just plain ignorant that real Mormonism condemns his faith by name? This anti-Presbyterian sentiment (hence, anti-Hewitts chosen faith) is recorded where Joseph Smith had a vision of God the Father (as a male being) and Jesus Christ in the spring of 1820. Smith asked God which Protestant denomination was truethe Methodists, Presbyterians, or Baptists. Smiths vision, as found in LDS scripture, states that these three denominations alone were in Palmyra, New York (1:9). Smith then queried, Who of all these parties is right; or, are they all wrong together? (1:10). Clearly Joseph Smith wanted to know if Presbyterianism (Hugh Hewitts faith) was right or wrong. He was answered by a personal appearance of God the Father and Jesus Christ in New York, where Jesus directly told him, join none of them, for they were all wrong, and the Personage who addressed me said that all their creeds were an abomination in his sight; that those professors were all corrupt; that: they draw near to me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me, they teach for doctrines the commandments of men, having a form of godliness, but they deny the power thereof (1:19).
Hugh is in big trouble with Jesus! To be most like his friend Mitt Romney, he needs to repent of his wrong Presbyterianism (since Jesus said so!) and repent of his creeds (beliefs) that are so abominable to Jesus, and repent of his corrupt faith. Of the three denominations, Smith singled out the Presbyterians as specifically not true. Hewitt needs to get right with the Jesus found in Mormon scripture. Mormon scripture is clearly anti-Presbyterian. Yet in the strangest twist of Hughs logic, he labels anyone an anti-Mormon in his book who has the same opinion of Mormonism as what Joseph Smith did of Presbyterians, but nowhere in his book did he call Smith (or Romney) an anti-Presbyterian.
Here is an example of how Hewitt defended Mormonism from his May 4, 2007 radio program:
Caller Greg: The question I have is, I know very little about Mormonism, and my question falls into the cult or denomination thing. I think, was it Pastore, a columnist with Townhall, wrote an article a couple of weeks ago? Its about the sum total of what I know about it.
Hewitt: I would encourage you to read my book, which of course is not a surprise to you, its available at Amazon dot com. I reject the cult title. I believe cult has about it an element of coercion, which is simply not applicable to the Mormons and it is a sect.
Caller Greg: Do you think [Greg was obviously drowned out and cut off the air by Hewitt.]
Hewitt: I just dont believe that you should call . Cult carries with it this wheezing of an organ in the background and the idea of chains in the basement and the Branch Davidian and James Jones and I think it is inappropriate for conversation. And when I see Frank next, Im going to argue that point with him. Cause, I just dont think if if and I do know where it comes from Walter Martin wrote the Kingdom of the Cults, but Walter Martin blames that Hinduism is a cult, that Islam is a cult, I dont think that he calls the Catholic Church a cult, but his definition is expansive. In the modern vernacular it means sinister and the Mormons arent just simply not sinister. Hey, Greg, thanks.
There are problems with Hewitts definition of cult. Hewitt does not distinguish between the scholarly definitions of cult from different fields of study, namely psychological, sociological, and theological. He first defined cult psychologically, which under certain circumstances is correct. Some cults use coercion on their members. He failed to tell his audience that this is the psychological definition and that there are other equally legitimate definitions in other fields of study.
To separate Mormonism from his coercion cult definition, he then tries to separate Mormonism from coercion. Had Hugh watched the PBS special, The Mormons, that aired just three days earlier (April 30 and May 1), he would have seen how Mormonism uses coercion and psychological pressure on its members. I would suggest that he view The Mormons online The Mormons (http://www.pbs.org/mormons/view) and pay special attention to the section on the excommunication of the Mormon intellectuals, many of whom were Brigham Young University educated, but when they intellectually differed with their church, then they were humiliated through excommunication. Also pay attention to the section about the pressure within Mormonism for perfection that gives LDS women a higher than national average of suicide and anti-depressant drug usage.
I dont know how Hewitt missed these things, but a scant Internet research would have shown him a much different story:
Ken Ponder, Ph.D, MORMON WOMEN, PROZAC® and THERAPY, Mormon Women, Prozac and Therapy Julie Cart, "Study Finds Utah Leads Nation in Antidepressant Use," Los Angeles Times, 20 February 2002, A6.
Degn, L. Yeates, E. Greenwell, B. Fiddler, L. Mormon women and depression, Sunstone magazine
Hilton, Sterling C, et al. 2002. Suicide Rates and Religious Commitment in Young Adult Males in Utah. American Journal of Epidemiology. Vol. 155, No. 5: 413-19. Suicide Rates and Religious Commitment in Young Adult Males in Utah
Even a pro-Mormon BYU study admits that Mormon women use more anti-depressants and commit suidide more than the national average http://www.usatoday. com/news/health/2004-04-02-mormon-depression_x.htm [Link no longer active]
Contrary to what Hewitt said, coersion, in fact, applies to Mormonism at several levels, therefore it indeed fits within his first description of a cult.
Hewitts next foible was to create a self-styled definition that is not found anywhere, Cult carries with it this wheezing of an organ in the background and the idea of chains in the basement and the Branch Davidian and James Jones and I think it is inappropriate for conversation. From where did he get this? This is not what most people think when they hear the word cult. Hugh most likely means Jim Jones, with apologies to all of the James Jones existing elsewhere. There is no question that the Branch Davidians and Jim Jones (the Peoples Temple) were cults, but what made them so? Did they have organs or chains in basements? Neither one did, but perhaps Hugh was thinking of the famous organ at the Mormon Tabernacle in Salt Lake City.
It appears that what Hugh was attempting was, again, a psychological or sociological definition of cult. I would suggest more sound and scholarly definitions of a cult from qualified writers who list Mormonism as a cult like sociologist Ronald Enroth, Ph.D. (Evangelizing the Cults, 1990), theologians Alan Gomes, Ph.D. (Unmasking the Cults, 1998); Drs. Nichols, Mather, and Schmidt (Encyclopedic Dictionary of Cults, Sects, and World Religions, 2007); and a host of others, including some from Hewitts reformed Protestant background, like Dr. Jan K. Van Baalan (Chaos of the Cults, 1938; Gist of the Cults, 1944), Dr. Anthony Hoekema (Four Major Cults, 1963; Mormonism, 1973), Dr. Ravi Zacharias (Kingdom of the Cults, general editor, 2006), and Josh McDowell and Don Stewart (The Deceivers, 1992).
Hewitt stated, I do know where it comes from. This I doubt, after hearing his answer. The term cult was first used of Mormonism in 1898. Hewitt continued, Walter Martin wrote the Kingdom of the Cults, but Walter Martin blames that Hinduism is a cult, that Islam is a cult, I dont think that he calls the Catholic Church a cult, but his definition is expansive. Since I began working with Walter Martin in 1976 and I have continuously been on the staff of researchers and editors for his works since then, I think that I am better positioned than Hewitt to say what Walter Martin taught.
Hewitt is absolutely wrong. Martin did not state that Hinduism and Islam are cults. Hugh owes Christians an apology for his careless denigration of Martin and his works. Beginning in 1985, Martin included several chapters on world religions in his best-selling Kingdom of the Cults, but he always made clear distinctions between cults and world religions. What Hewitt claims to know is a fabrication.
Hewitts final statement, In the modern vernacular it means sinister and the Mormons arent just simply not sinister. This has a twofold problem. It does not define the word cults, but perhaps it describes what some cults do. I challenge Hewitt to find any scholarly work that uses sinister and cult interchangeably as mutually definitional terms. A good theological definition of a cult is a group of people basing their beliefs upon the worldview of an isolated leadership, which always denies the central doctrines of the Christianity as found in the Bible (Josh McDowell, The Deceivers, 1992, 15). Mormonism, as what McDowell includes in his book, fits that description with Smith isolating himself from apostate Christianity and creating a worldview in opposition to biblical Christianity that contains gods, goddesses, populated worlds, spirit children, and the progression of mankind toward godhood.
The second part of Hewitts statement, that Mormons are not sinister, is debatable. Mormons are quite often sinister, in spite of what Hewitt claims. We could talk about such sinister things as the Mountain Meadows massacre, or the numerous scandals through the ages, which is why the Wall Street Journal once stated that Utah is the securities fraud capital of the United States (WSJ, 2/25/1974 and Utah Holiday Magazine, October, 1990), but that aside, I think that Hugh contradicts himself here since he admits that the Mormon Olympic scandal, which was an international embarrassment to the Mormon Church, was straightened out by none other than his wonderful friend, Mitt Romney. How can he say on one hand that Mormons are not sinister and on the other hand state that Mormons were caught in a bribery scandal with the International Olympic Committee that Mitt Romney had to straighten out? Queer, isnt it? The Mormons even fit Hughs last definition of a cult with their sinister actions, which is why Romney had to rescue their reputation.
Thank you...
That is astounding...
Here's other quotes I mentioned -- from: WhiteHorseProphecyQuotes
After you read these you'll know without a doubt that the Mormon elite through the years embraced what Smith said as a "prophecy":
I shall take it as a witness that God designs to cut the thread between us and the world, when an army undertakes to make their appearance in this Territory to chastise me or to destroy my life from the earth . I shall take a hostile movement by our enemies as evidence that it is time for the thread to be cut. - Prophet Brigham Young, Journal of Discourses, v. 5, pp. 256-257, September 20, 1857
Will the Constitution be destroyed? No: it will be held inviolate by this people; and, as Joseph Smith said, The time will come when the destiny of the nation will hang upon a single thread. At that critical juncture, this people will step forth and save it from the threatened destruction. It will be so. - Prophet Brigham Young, Journal of Discourses, v. 7, p. 15, July 4, 1854
[W]hen the Constitution of the United States hangs, as it were, upon a single thread, they will have to call for the Mormon Elders to save it from utter destruction. Prophet Brigham Young, Journal of Discourses, v. 2, p. 182, February 18, 1855
How long will it be before the words of the prophet Joseph will be fulfilled? He said if the Constitution of the United States were saved at all it must be done by this people. It will not be many years before these words come to pass. Prophet Brigham Young, Journal of Discourses, v. 12, p. 204
The present Constitution, with a few alterations of a trifling nature, is just as good as we want; and if it is sustained on this land of Joseph, it will be done by us and our posterity. Prophet Brigham Young, Journal of Discourses, v. 8, p. 324
I expect to see the day when the Elders of Israel will protect and sustain civil and religious liberty and every Constitutional right bequeathed to us by our fathers, and spread these rights abroad in connection with the Gospel for the salvation of all nations. I shall see this whether I live or die. Prophet Brigham Young, Journal of Discourses, v. 11, p. 262 ...
Saviors of the Nation.To escape the judgments hanging over the wicked, and find a place where they might worship God unmolested, the Latter-day Saints fled to the Rocky Mountains. Here, and here only, during the temporary isolation sought and found by them in the chambers of "the everlasting hills," could they hope to be let alone long enough to become strong enough to accomplish their greater destiny. For in that enforced exodus and the rounding of this mountain-girt empire there was more than the surface facts reveal. If tradition can be relied upon, Joseph Smith prophesied that the Elders of Israel would save this Nation in the hour of its extremest peril. At a time when anarchy would threaten the life of the Government, and the Constitution be hanging as by a thread, the maligned and misunderstood "Mormons"always patriotic, and necessarily so from the very genius of their religionwould stand firm upon Freedom's rocky ramparts, and as champions of law and order, liberty and justice, call to their aid in the same grand cause kindred [p.61] spirits from every part of the nation and from every corner of the world. All this preparatory to a mighty movement that would sweep every form of evil from off the face of the land, and build the Zion of God upon the spot consecrated for its erection. This traditional utterance of their martyred Seer is deeply imbedded in the heart and hope of the Mormon people. Apostle Orson F. Whitney, Saturday Night Thoughts, pp. 60-61
... [Someday] there would be no stable government outside of the Latter-day Saints; and that it is their destiny as a people, to uphold constitutional government upon this land. Apostle George Q. Cannon, Journal of Discourses, v. 25, p. 123, April 3, 1881
Now, these are the commandments of God, the principles contained in these commandments of the great Eternal are the principles that underly the Constitution of our country, and all just laws. Joseph Smith, the prophet, was inspired to affirm and ratify this truth, and he further predicted that the time would come, when the Constitution of our country would hang as it were by a thread, and that the Latter-day Saints, above all other people in the world, would come to the rescue of that great and glorious palladium of our liberty. We cannot brook the thought of it being torn into shreds, or destroyed, or trampled under foot and ignored by men. We cannot tolerate the sentiment, at one time expressed, by a man high in authority in the nation. He said: "The constitution be damned; the popular sentiment of the people is the constitution!" That is the sentiment of anarchism, and has spread to a certain extent, and is spreading over "the land of liberty and the home of the brave." We do not tolerate it. Latter-day Saints cannot tolerate such a spirit as this. It is anarchy. It means destruction. It is the spirit of mobocracy, and the Lord knows we have suffered enough from mobocracy, and we do not want any more of it. Our people from Mexico are suffering from the effects of that same spirit. We do not want any more of it, and we cannot afford to yield to that spirit or contribute to it in the least degree. We should stand with a front like flint against every spirit or species of contempt or disrespect for the constitution of our country and the constitutional laws of our land. Prophet Joseph F. Smith, Gospel Doctrine, p. 403
Now, these are the commandments of God, the principles contained in these commandments of the great Eternal are the principles that underly the Constitution of our country and all just laws. Joseph Smith, the prophet, was inspired to affirm and ratify this truth, and he further predicted that the time would come, when the Constitution of our country would hang as it were by a thread, and that the Latter-day Saints above all other people in the world would come to the rescue of that great and glorious palladium of our liberty. Prophet Joseph F. Smith, Conference Report, October 1912, p. 11
My brethren and sisters, I hope that we will go home from this conference determined as a great body of people, to stand for law, order, righteousness, justice and peace on earth and good will among all men. I believe as the Prophet Joseph has written, that the day would come when there would be so much of disorder, of secret combinations taking the law into their own hands, tramping upon Constitutional rights and the liberties of the people, that the Constitution would hang as by a thread. Yes, but it will still hang, and there will be enough of good people, many who may not belong to our Church at all, people who have respect for law and for order, and for Constitutional rights, who will rally around with us and save the Constitution. I have never read that that thread would be cut. It will hang; the Constitution will abide and this civilization, that the Lord has caused to be built up, will stand fortified through the power of God, by putting from our hearts all that is evil, or that is wrong in the sight of God, by our living as we should live, acceptable to him. Apostle Charles W. Nibley, Conference Report, October 1922, p. 40
The Prophet Joseph told us that he saw the day when even the Constitution of the United States would be torn and hang as by a thread. But, thank the Lord, the thread did not break. He saw the day when this people would be a balance of power to come to its defense. The Book of Mormon prophecies concerning the future of America have been referred to in our hearing during this conference, wherein it is stated that this nation, though it becomes a mighty nation, still it can stand in security here only as it serves the God of this land. That conception was in the hearts of the men who founded America. Apostle Melvin J. Ballard, Conference Report, October 1928, p. 108
I believe that it is the destiny of the Latter-day Saints to support the Constitution of the United States. The Prophet Joseph Smith is alleged to have said--and I believe he did say it--that the day would come when the Constitution would hang as by a thread. But he saw that the thread did not break, thank the Lord, and that the Latter-day Saints would become a balance of power, with others, to preserve that Constitution. If there is--and there is one part of the Constitution hanging as by a thread today--where do the Latter-day Saints belong? Their place is to rally to the support of that Constitution, and maintain it and defend it and support it by their lives and by their vote. Let us not disappoint God nor his prophet. Our place is fixed. Apostle Melvin J. Ballard, Conference Report, April 1933, p. 127
"The Prophet Joseph told us that he saw the day when even the Constitution of the United States would be torn and hang as by a thread.... He saw the day when this people would be a balance of power to come to its defense." Apostle Melvin J. Ballard, Conference Report, October 1928, p. 108
"You and I have heard all our lives that the time may come when the Constitution may hang by a thread. I do not know whether it is a thread, or a small rope by which it now hangs, but I do know that whether it shall live or die is now in the balance. Apostle J. Reuben Clark, Conference Report, October 1942, p. 58
How long will it be before the words of the prophet Joseph will be fulfilled? He said if the Constitution of the United States were saved at all it must be done by this people. It will not be many years before these words come to pass. When the Constitution of the United States hangs, as it were, upon a single thread, they will have to call for the Mormon Elders to save it from utter destruction; and they will step forth and do it...if it is sustained on this land of Joseph, it will be done by us and our posterity. Apostle Mark E. Peterson, Conference Report, April 1946, p. 171
"[Joseph Smith] said if the Constitution of the United States were saved at all it must be done by this people. It will not be many years before these words come to pass. When the Constitution of the United States hangs, as it were, upon a single thread, they will have to call for the 'Mormon Elders to save it from utter destruction; and they will step forth and do it." Apostle Mark E. Peterson, Conference Report, April 1946, p. 171
"Joseph Smith... [said] the time would come when the Constitution would hang as by a thread and at that time when it was thus in jeopardy, the elders of this Church would step forth and save it from destruction. Why the elders of this Church?...'We alone know by revelation as to how the Constitution came into being, and we, alone, know by revelation the destiny of this nation." Prophet Harold B. Lee, Conference Report, October 1952, p. 18
But beyond all that, the Latter-day Saints have a responsibility, that may be better understood when we recall the prophecy of Joseph Smith who declared that the time would come when (the destiny and ) the Constitution of these United States would hang as it were by a thread, and that this people, the sons of Zion, would rise up and save it from threatened destruction. (J. of D., Vol. 7:15) I want to ask you to consider the meaning of that prophecy, in the light of the declaration of the prophets of the Book of Mormon times, who declared that this land was a choice land above all other lands, and would be free from bondage and from captivity, and from all other nations under heaven, if they will but serve the God of this land, even our Savior, Jesus Christ. (Ether 2:12) Prophet Harold B. Lee, Conference Report, April 1942, p. 87
It was Joseph Smith who has been quoted as having said that the time would come when the Constitution would hang as by a thread and at that time when it was thus in jeopardy, the elders of this Church would step forth and save it from destruction. Why the elders of this Church? Would it be sacrilegious to paraphrase the words of the Apostle Peter, and say that the Constitution of the United States could be saved by the elders of this Church because this Church and this Church alone has the words of eternal life? We alone know by revelation as to how the Constitution came into being, and we, alone, know by revelation the destiny of this nation. The preservation of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness can be guaranteed upon no other basis than upon a sincere faith and testimony of the divinity of these teachings. Prophet Harold B. Lee, Conference Report, October 1952, p. 18
"[Joseph Smith] said the time would come when this Constitution would hang as by a thread, and this is true.... 'Now I tell you it is time the people of the United States were waking up with the understanding that if they don't save the Constitution from the dangers that threaten it, we will have a change of government.'" Prophet Joseph Fielding Smith, Conference Report, April 1950, p. 159
CONSTITUTION TO HANG BY A THREAD. The statement has been made that the Prophet said the time would come when this Constitution would hang as by a thread, and this is true. There has been some confusion, however, as to just what he said following this. I think that Elder Orson Hyde has given us a correct interpretation wherein he says that the Prophet said the Constitution would be in danger. Said Orson Hyde: I believe he said something like thisthat the time would come when the Constitution and the country would be in danger of an overthrow and said he: If the Constitution be saved at all, it will be by the elders of this Church.' I believe this is about the language, as nearly as I can recollect it. Prophet Joseph Fielding Smith, Doctrines of Salvation, v. 3, p. 326
I must not take more time but to add this: The statement has been made that the Prophet said the time would come when this Constitution would hang as by a thread, and this is true. There has been some confusion, however, as to just what he said following this. I think that Elder Orson Hyde has given us a correct interpretation wherein he says that the Prophet said the Constitution would be in danger. Now I tell you it is time the people of the United States were waking up with the understanding that if they don't save the Constitution from the dangers that threaten it, we will have a change of government. Prophet Joseph Fielding Smith, Conference Report, April 1950, p. 159

[Joseph Smith] foresaw the time when the destiny of the nation would be in danger and would hang as by a thread. Thank God he did not see the thread break. Modern-day prophets for the last thirty years have been warning us that we have been rapidly moving in that direction. Fortunately, the Prophet Joseph Smith saw the part the elders of Israel would play in this crisis. Will there be some of us who won't care about saving the Constitution, others who will be blinded by the craftiness of men, and some who will knowingly be working to destroy it? He that has ears to hear and eyes to see can discern by the Spirit and through the words of God's mouthpiece that our liberties are being taken. Thank God for the Constitution. And may God bless the elders of Israel that when, as President John Taylor said, the people shall have torn to shreds the Constitution of the United States, the Elders of Israel will be found holding it up to the nations of earth and proclaiming liberty. It is my conviction that the elders of Israel, widely spread over the nation, will at that crucial time successfully rally the righteous of our country and provide the necessary balance of strength to save the institutions of constitutional government. If the Gentiles on this land reject the word of God and conspire to overthrow liberty and the Constitution, their doom is fixed, and they "shall be cut off from among my people who are of the covenant" (1 Nephi 14:6; 3 Nephi 21:11, 14, 21; D&C 84:114-15, 117). (God, Family, Country, p. 345.) As we spread abroad in this land, bearers of this priesthood, men and women with high ideals and standards, our influence will spread as we take positions of leadership in the community, in the state, in the nation, in the world. We will be able to sit in counsel with others and we will be able to influence others in paths of righteousness. We will help to save this nation, because this nation can only be preserved on the basis of righteous living. Prophet Ezra Taft Benson, Teachings of Ezra Taft Benson, pp. 618-619
It is no wonder that the Prophet Joseph said--even though he knew he would suffer martyrdom in this landThe Constitution of the United States is a glorious standard; it is founded in the wisdom of God. It is a heavenly banner. Yet, according to his contemporaries, he foresaw the time when the destiny of the nation would be in danger and would hang as by a thread. From time to time, accounts of various supposed visions, revelations, and prophecies are spread forth by and among the Latter-day Saints, who should know better than to believe or spread such false information. One of these false and deceptive documents that has cropped up again and again for over a century is the so-called White Horse Prophecy. This supposed prophecy purports to be a long and detailed account by the Prophet Joseph Smith concerning the wars, turmoils, and difficulties which should exist in the last days. "It is a sad commentary on the spiritual insight of professing saints that they will generate intense interest in these supposed prophetic utterances and yet know little of and pay less attention to the volumes of true and sound prophetic writings which delineate authoritatively the course of latter-day world events. It is known by all informed gospel students that whenever revealed truth, new or old, is to be sent forth for the enlightenment of the saints and of the world, it will be announced officially and publicly by the First Presidency. "Speaking, first of the White Horse Prophecy specifically, and then of all such false revelations in general, President Joseph F. Smith said: The ridiculous story about the `red horse,' and `the black horse,' and `the white horse,' and a lot of trash that has been circulated about, and printed, and sent around as a great revelation given by the Prophet Joseph Smith, is a matter that was gotten up, I understand, some ten years after the death of the Prophet Joseph Smith, by two of our brethren, who put together some broken sentences from the Prophet that they may have heard him utter from time to time, and formulated this so-called revelation out of it, and it was never spoken by the Prophet in the manner in which they have put it forth. It is simply false; that is all there is to it. Now, these stories of revelations that are being circulated around are of no consequence, except for rumor and silly talk by persons that have no authority. The fact of the matter is simply here and this. No man can enter into God's rest unless he will absorb the truth insofar that all error, all falsehood, all misunderstanding and misstatements, he will be able to sift thoroughly and dissolve, and know that it is error and not truth. When you know God's truth, when you enter into God's rest, you will not be hunting after revelations from Tom, Dick, and Harry all over the world. You will not be following the will of the wisps of the vagaries of men and their own ideas. When you know the truth, you will abide in the truth, and the truth will make you free, and it is only the truth that will free you from the errors of men, and from the falsehood and misrepresentations of the evil one, who lies in wait to deceive and to mislead the people of God from the paths of righteousness and truth. (Conf. Rep., Oct. 1918, p. 58.) Apostle Bruce R. McConkie, Mormon Doctrine, p.835
[T]he kingdom of God... is to be a political institution that shall hold sway over all the earth; to which all other governments will be subordinate and by which they will be dominated. LDS Historian and Seventy B.H. Roberts, The Rise and Fall of Nauvoo, 1900, p. 180
I would like to add this in conclusion. It is said that President Brigham Young, many years ago, made this statement: When the Constitution of the United States hangs, as it were, upon a single thread, they will have to call for Mormon elders to save it from utter destruction: and they will step forth and do it. (Brigham Young, Journal of Discourses, 2:182, Feb. 18, 1855.) This is recorded in the Journal of Discourses and I presume it is accurate, but however it may be, is it not a possibility, that this Church, in its great leadership and in the power that will come to it in advocating the things that are divine and are right and true as for example the great welfare program, is not possible that when we as a nation shall have exhausted our resources--and we can well do that if we do not turn about--when we have we have reached that point is it not possible that to us will those who are not of us look for guidance and we will be held up as a people who are pointing an economic way that will mean for the economic and spiritual salvation and blessing of our people. High Priest Clifford E. Young, Conference Report, April 1949, pp. 75-76
LDS attachment to the Constitution has been further encouraged by an important oral tradition deriving from a statement attributed to Joseph Smith, according to which the Constitution would "hang by a thread" and be rescued, if at all, only with the help of the Saints. Church President John Taylor seemed to go further when he prophesied, "When the people shall have torn to shreds the Constitution of the United States the Elders of Israel will be found holding it up to the nations of the earth and proclaiming liberty and equal rights to all men" (JD 21:8). To defend the principles of the Constitution under circumstances where the "iniquity," or moral decay, of the people has torn it to shreds might well require wisdom at least equal to that of the men raised up to found it. In particular, it would require great insight into the relationship between freedom and virtue in a political embodiment of moral agency. Encyclopedia of Mormonism, v. 1, p. 1992
"We shall build the Zion of the Lord in peace untill the servants of that Lord shall begin to lay the foundation of a great and high watch Tower and then shall they begin to say within themselves, what need hath my Lord of this tower seeing this is a time of peace &c. Then the Enemy shall come as a thief in the night and scatter the servants abroad. When the seed of these 12 Olive trees are scattered abroad they will wake up the Nations of the whole Earth. Even this Nation will be on the very verge of crumbling to pieces and tumbling to the ground and when the constitution is upon the brink of ruin this people will be the Staff up[on] which the Nation shall lean and they shall bear the constitution away from the very verge of destruction." The Historians Corner, BYU Studies, v. 19, no. 3, pp. 391-392
The History of the Church account is an amalgamation of the reports in the Joseph Smith Diary and the Nauvoo Neighbor. The report by Levi Richards is here published for the first time. A reminiscent account of this discourse by James Burgess contains the essential details found in the other three accounts published here, and adds that the "Constitution and Government would hang by a brittle thread." In the month of May 1843. Several miles east of Nauvoo. The Nauvoo Legion was on parade and review. At the close of which Joseph Smith made some remarks upon our condition as a people and upon our future prospects contrasting our present condition with our past trials and persecutions by the hands of our enemies. Also upon the constitution and government of the United States stating that the time would come when the Constitution and Government would hand by a brittle thread and would be ready to fall into other hands but this people the Latter day Saints will step forth and save it. General Scott and part of his staff on the American Army was present on the occasion. I James Burgess was present and testify to the above (James Burgess Notebook, Church Archives). Ehat and Cook, Words of Joseph Smith, 6 May 1843 Note, p. 279
Brigham Young and other preachers are constantly inculcating in the minds of the crowded audiences who sit beneath their teachings every Sabbath that the United States is of no consequence, that it lies in ruins, and that the prophecy of Joseph Smith is being fulfilled to the letter. According to the prophecy, the United States as a nation is to be destroyed. That the Gentiles, as they call all persons outside of their church, will continue to fight with each other until they perish and then the Saints are to step in and quietly enjoy the possession of the land and also what is left of the ruined cities and desolated places. And that Zion is to be built up, not only in the valleys and the mountains but the great center of their power and glory is to be in Missouri where the Saints under the lead of their prophet were expelled many years ago. Steven Harding, Utah governor, in Eugene E. Campbell, Establishing Zion: The Mormon Church in the American West, 1847-1869, 1988, p. 292
In all the meetings that I have attended, not one word, not one prayer, has been uttered or offered up for the saving of our cause and for the restoration of peace, but on the contrary the God of the Saints has been implored to bring swift destruction on all nations, peoples, and institutions that stand in the way of the triumph of this people. Steven Harding, Utah governor, in Eugene E. Campbell, Establishing Zion: The Mormon Church in the American West, 1847-1869, 1988, p. 292
[Brigham] taught followers that the governments of the earth were false and should be overthrown, that God had only delegated to the priesthood the right to set up a government. God would appoint a ruler, and all persons who otherwise pretended to have authority to govern were usurpers. Young was said to have asserted that although the Constitution of the United States was a revelation, it had fulfilled its purpose the formation of a government so that the Mormon church could be organized. According to Young, slavery had nothing to do with the present disturbances, which were in consequence of the persecution the Saints had suffered at the hands of the American people. Eugene E. Campbell, Establishing Zion: The Mormon Church in the American West, 1847-1869, 1988, p. 292
Our government, the best government in the world, is crumbling to pieces. Those who have it in their hands are the ones who are destroying it. How long will it be before the words of the prophet Joseph will be fulfilled? He said if the Constitution of the United States were saved at all it must be done by this people. It will not be many years before these words come to pass. Prophet Brigham Young, Journal of Discourses, v. 12, p. 204, April 8, 1868
"Joseph Smith... predicted that the time would come, 'when the Constitution of our country would hang as it were by a thread, and that the Latter-day Saints above all other people in the world would come to the rescue." Prophet Joseph F. Smith, Conference Report, October 1912, p. 11
"... if I were to guess as to how the Constitution may 'hang by a thread' it would be because of the immense powers given tot he President and his opportunity for their abuse. Let us... resolve that we will do all in our power to preserve these principles for our posterity. This is our duty as citizens of the United States, and pre-eminently our duty as Latter-day Saints." Senator Wallace F. Bennett, Utah, BYU Speeches, February 15, 1961, p. 13
I gave the language and sources of the prophetic utterance made by the Prophet Joseph that the Constitution of the United States would hang by a single thread, but be saved by the elders of Israel. I hope you will read those sources so you will be well-informed as to this prophecy and be prepared to do your part in its fulfillment. Ernest L. Wilkinson, BYU President (1951-1971), BYU Speeches, April 21, 1966, p. 7,)
LDS attachment to the Constitution has been further encouraged by an important oral tradition deriving from a statement attributed to Joseph Smith, according to which the Constitution would hang by a thread and be rescued, if at all, only with the help of the Saints. Church President John Taylor seemed to go further when he prophesied, When the people shall have torn to shreds the Constitution of the United States the Elders of Israel will be found holding it up to the nations of the earth.;: Daniel H. [LDS TV weatherman Thom Spencer] at a Republican rally broke with tradition that a journalist should remain objective and spoke out at the rally because of a prophecy by Joseph Smith, who founded the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints more than 150 years ago. Smith predicted that the time would come when the Constitution and government would hang by a brittle thread and be ready to fall into other hands, but this people, the latter-day saints, will step forth and save it. Weathermans Politics Cloud His Role on TV, Seattle Times, November 24, 2000
They tolerate everything that's bad, and they're intolerant of everything that's good. Religious freedom is going to go down the drain, too. Ive never seen it worse than this, where the Constitution literally is hanging by a thread. Orrin Hatch, Republican Mormon Senator of Utah, The Doug Wright Show, (KSL) November 9, 1999
The documents show that Joseph Smith did prophecy a number of times that the United States and the Constitution would be imperiled and that the elders would have a hand in saving them. D. Michael Stewart, I Have A Question, Ensign, June 1976, p. 64
... the prophet Joseph Smith did make the marvelous prediction that it is the destiny of the Latter-day Saints to some day save the Constitution of the United States. Preston Nibley, LDS church historian, Deseret News, December 15, 1948; quoted in The White Horse Prophecy, 1993, p. 65
Its a very common belief [among Mormons] that the Constitution will hang by a thread and the Church will save it. Jan Shipps, quoted in Warchol and Heilprin, Mormon Myth Stalks Hatch to Presidential Race, Salt Lake Tribune, Junly 15, 1999
"We have much in our national system that militates against the rise of a dictator. The Bill of Rights with its philosophy of individual rights against oppression is still a curb on a power-hungry President. But if I were to guess as to how the Constitution may "hang by a thread" it would be because of the immense powers given to the President and his opportunity for their abuse. Let us delve once again into the great principles of the Constitution and resolve that we will do all in our power to preserve these principles for our posterity. This is our duty as citizens of the United States, and pre-eminently our duty as Latter-day Saints, because without the Constitution this glorious restoration would not have taken place in this land and might not have taken place at this point in history. Senator Wallace F. Bennett, BYU Speeches, February 15, 1961, p. 13
"Our government is an organization which was to, and since has, enacted, judged and enforced law through and by legislative, judicial and executive departments. It is encumbent on the American people to steadfastly maintain the historic balance of power by the three branches of government if our political system is to be preserved. If this is not done then the thread by which it has been predicted the Constitution will hang will be clipped and our form of government will disappear. We, the American people, must not become so internationally minded as to sell our birthright for a spurious promise of world peace. The most nationally-minded people are our enemies. We must remain faithful to our pledge, regardless of charges of chauvinism, to preserve America with our lives, our fortunes and our sacred honor. Judge Joseph E. Nelson, BYU Speeches, April 24, 1963, p. 3
I am concerned that in our worship of materialism in our country we now have an indebtedness of over $5,000 for every man, woman, and child in this country. (This includes obligations for goods already delivered and services already rendered to the government, although payable in the future.) I am concerned that we have in effect abandoned the Monroe Doctrine as our safeguard for ultimate protection of this hemisphere, and that as a result we are threatened with Communism not only in Cuba but in South America and now in Africa as well. If the Constitution is to hang by a thread in this country, I want to be one to help to preserve it. Dr. Ernest L. Wilkinson, BYU Speeches, February 18, 1964, p. 9
In my commencement address I gave the language and sources of the prophetic utterance made by the Prophet Joseph that the Constitution of the United States would hang by a single thread, but be saved by the elders of Israel. I hope you will read those sources so you will be well-informed as to this prophecy and be prepared to do your part in its fulfillment. Dr. Ernest L. Wilkinson, BYU Speeches, April 21, 1966, p. 7
Now what has happened in our country during the time we have been plunging toward socialism? Are we actually at that point where the Constitution may be hanging by a single thread and we need to step in to save it? Dr. Ernest L. Wilkinson, BYU Speeches, April 21, 1966, p. 9
Anyone can look at the words of the Prophet Joseph Smith... Brigham Young and others.... I have always felt that they meant that sometime the question of whether we are going to proceed on the basis of the Constitution would arise and at this point government leaders who were Mormons would be involved in answering that question. George Romney, interview in A Mans Religion and American Politics: An Interview with Governor Romney, Dialogue: A Journal of Mormon Thought, Autumn 1967, v. 2, p. 25
The White Horse Prophecy |
A prophecy by Joseph Smith of coming calamities in the western hemisphere The following is a copy from the Journal of Elder John J. Roberts, of Paradise, Utah. On about the 6th of May, 1843, a Grand Review of the Nauvoo Legion was held in Nauvoo. The Prophet Joseph Smith complimented them for their good discipline and evolutions performed. The weather being hot, he called for a glass of water. With the glass of water in hand, he said: "I will drink to your toast to the overthrow of the Mobocrats," which he did in the following language: "Here's wishing they were in the middle of the sea in a stone canoe with iron paddles and that a shark swallowed the canoe and the Devil swallowed the shark and himself locked up in the northwest corner of Hell, the key lost and a blind man hunting it." The next morning a man who heard the Prophet give the toast returned to visit the mansion of the Prophet and so abused him with bad language that he was ordered out by the Prophet. It was while the two were out that my attention was attracted to them, and hearing the man speaking in a loud tone of voice, I went towards them, the man finally leaving. There were then present the Prophet, Theodore Turley and myself. The Prophet began talking to us of the mobbings and deriding and persecutions we as a people had endured, "but we will have worse things to see. Our persecutors will have all the mobbings they want. Don't wish them any harm, for when you see their sufferings you will shed bitter tears for them." While this conversation was going on we stood by his south wicket gate in a triangle. Turning to me, he said, "I want to tell you something of the future. I will speak in a parable like unto John the Revelator. You will go to the Rocky Mountains and you will be a great and mighty people established there, which I will call the White Horse of peace and safety." When the Prophet said, "You will see it," I said, "Where will you be at that time?" He said, "I shall never go there. Your enemies will continue to follow you with persecutions and they will make obnoxious laws against you in Congress to destroy the White Horse, but you will have a friend or two to defend you and throw out the worst parts of the law so they will not hurt you so much. You must continue to petition Congress all the time, but they will treat you like strangers and aliens and they will not give you your rights, but will govern you with strangers and commissioners. You will see the Constitution of the United States almost destroyed. It will hang like a thread as fine as as a silk fiber." At that time the Prophet's countenance became sad, because as he said, "I love the Constitution; it was made by the inspiration of God; and it will be preserved and saved by the efforts of the White Horse, and by the Red Horse who will combine in its defense. The White Horse will find the mountains full of minerals and they will become rich (at this time, it must be remembered, the precious metals were not known to exist in either the Rocky Mountains or California). You will see silver piled up in the streets. You will see the gold shoveled up like sand. Gold will be of little value then, even in a mercantile capacity; for the people of the world will have something else to do in seeking for salvation. The time will come when the banks of every nation will fall and only two places will be safe where people can deposit their gold and treasure. This place will be the White Horse and England's vaults. A terrible revolution will take place in the land of America, such as has never been seen before; for the land will be left without a Supreme Government, and every specie of wickedness will be practiced rampantly in the land. Father will be against son and son against father; mother against daughter and daughter against mother. The most terrible scenes of bloodshed, murder and rape that have ever been imagined or looked upon will take place. People will be taken from the earth and there will be peace and love only in the Rocky Mountains. This will cause many hundreds of thousands of the honest in heart of the world to gather there, not because they would be Saints, but for safety and because they will be so numerous that you will be in danger of famine, but not for want of seed, time and harvest, but because of so many to be fed. Many will come with bundles under their arms to escape the calamities for there will be no escape except only by escaping and fleeing to Zion. Those that come to you will try to keep the laws and be one with you for they will see your unity and the greatness of your organization. The Turkish Empire of the Crescent will be the first power to be disputed, for freedom must be given for the Gospel to be preached in the Holy Land. The Lord took of the best blood of the nations and planted them on the small islands now called England and Great Britain and gave them power in the nations for a thousand years and their power will continue with them that they may keep the balance of power; and they will keep Russia from sweeping her power over the world. England and France are now bitter enemies but they will be allied together and be united to keep Russia from conquering the world. The two popes, Greek and Catholic, will eventually come together in their decline and be united. The Protestant Religions do not know how much they are indebted to Henry VIII for throwing off the Pope's bill and establishing the Protestant faith. He was the only monarch who could do so at that time and he did it because the nation was at his back to sustain him. One of the peculiar features in England is the established Red-coat; a uniform making so remarkable a target to shoot at, and yet they have conquered wherever they have gone. The reason for this will be known to them some day as red is seen in a different color threading through under all history. The lion and the unicorn of England comes from there being so much blood of Israel in the nation. While the terrible things of which I have mentioned are going on, England will be neutral until it becomes so inhuman that she will interfere to stop the shedding of blood and history will be more properly understood. England and France will unite together to make peace, not to subdue the nations. She will find this nation so broken up and so many claiming government, till there will be no reasonable government. Then it will appear to the other nations, or powers, as though England had taken possession of the country. The Black Horse will flee to the invaders and will join them for they have fear of becoming slaves again; knowing that England did not believe in slavery, they will flee to them that they believe will make them safe. Armed with British bayonets, the doings of the Black Horse will be terrible." Here the Prophet said that he could not bear to look longer upon the scenes as shown to him in vision and he asked the Lord to close the scenes. Continuing, he said: "During this time the Great White Horse will have gathered strength, sending out elders to gather the honest in heart from among the Pale Horse, or people of the United States, to stand by the Constitution of the United States as it was given by the inspiration of God. In these days which are yet to come God will set up a Kingdom never to be thrown down, but other Kingdoms to come into it, and those Kingdoms that will not let the Gospel be preached in their lands will be humbled until they will." "England the Germany, Norway, Denmark, Switzerland, Holland and Belgium have a considerable amount of the blood of Israel among the people which must be gathered out. Those nations will submit to the nations of God. England will be the last of the nations to surrender, but when she does she will do it as a whole in comparison as she threw off the Catholic power. The nobility knows that the gospel is true, but it has not pomp enough, and grandeur and influence for them to yet embrace it. They are proud and will not acknowledge the Kingdom of God or come into it until they see the power it will have. Peace and safety in the Rocky Mountains will be protected by the Guardians, the White and Red Horses. The coming of the Messiah among his people will be so natural that only those who see him will know that he has come, but he will come and give his laws unto Zion and minister unto his people. This will not be his coming in the clouds of Heaven to take vengeance on the wicked of the world." "The temple in Jackson county, Missouri, will be built in that generation. The saints will think that there will not be time to build it, but with all the help you can receive, you can put up a great temple quickly. You will have all the gold, silver and precious stones you need, for these things will only be for the beautifying of the temple. Also, all the skilled mechanics you want and the Ten Tribes of Israel will help build it. When you see this land bound with iron, you may look forward to Jackson county." At this point, he made a pause, and looking up as though the vision were still in view, he said: "There is a land beyond the Rocky Mountains that will be invaded by the heathen Chinese unless great care and protection be given." Speaking of the heathen nations, he said: "Where there is no law there is no condemnation; this will apply to them. Power will be given to the White Horse to rebuke the nations afar off, and you obey it, for the laws go forth from Zion. The last great struggle that Zion will ever have to contend with will be when the whole of America will be made the Zion of God. Those opposing will be called Gog and Magog. The nations of the earth will be led by the Russian Czar and his power will be great, but all opposition will be overcome and this land will be the Zion of our God. Amen." |
Revelation
Chapter 6
{General Trends in The Tribulation}
{4 Horsemen of the Apocalypse/Four Seals of the Doomsday Book}
{Verses 1-8: Death of Unbelievers in the Tribulation}
1~~Next I watched when the Lamb {Jesus}
broke open the first of the seven seals.
Then I heard the first of the four angelic heralds
speaking with a voice of thunder {warning of coming judgment}, “Come”
{Note: The ‘lamb’ is a title for Jesus Christ in His 1st Advent. It emphasizes salvation and His strategic victory at the cross.}
2~~Then I looked . . . and
BEHOLD . . .
a white horse {depicting: victory, conquest and dictatorship} and the ‘one who sat on it’/rider {dictator of the revived Roman Empire
of the Tribulation}
had a battle bow {weapon of terrorism and unconventional warfare} and a crown {dictatorship/rulership}
was given to him.
In fact, as a conqueror
he appeared {on the scene of history}
in order that He might conquer.
3~~And when He {Jesus}
had broken the {second} seal,
I heard the second angelic herald saying, “Come”.
4~~ And then another . . .
a fiery red horse {represents great wars} . . .
appeared {on the scene of history} and
to the rider was given power/authority
to take peace
from the earth {there will be some peace until the red horse comes} so that they might slaughter each other.
In fact, a great sword {conventional warfare}
was given to him.
{Note: For more on the slaughter, see also Isaiah 63:6; 34:5-6.}
5~~And when He {Jesus Christ}
had broken the third seal
I heard the third angelic herald say, “Come.”
Then I looked and
behold a black horse {represents economic disaster} and
the rider had a pair of scales
in his hands.
6~~ Then I heard as it were a voice
in the center of the {four} angelic heralds saying,
“A quart of wheat {just enough food for one day}
for a day’s wages {refers to inflation} . . . and
three quarts of barley {poor people’s grain}
for a day’s wages {literally a denarius} . . . furthermore,
do not damage the oil {luxury food} and
the wine {luxury beverage}
7~~ And when He {Jesus Christ}
had broken open the fourth seal
{of the doomsday book} . . .
I heard the fourth angelic herald saying, “Come.”
8~~Then I looked . . . and
BEHOLD . . .
an ashen horse {represents the shocking death toll} . . . and
the rider . . .
his name WAS death {literally: ‘and the name to him-the death’
grammatical anacoluthon}.
In fact, Hades was marching along/’in step’ with him.
Furthermore, authority was given to them {death and Hades}
over a fourth of the earth {25% of the world’s population -
unbelievers here}
to kill with the sword . . . and
with famine {economic depression} . . . and
with deadly disease . . . and
by the wild animals of the earth.
{Note: This is a picture of a breakdown of all civilization in the Tribulation. There will be great warfare. And, because of war and other causes, the food will be diverted to the armies. And, the storage and transportation systems will breakdown so ‘supermarkets’ will be bare. Famine will result. Next, medicines will be in short supply and unsanitary conditions will cause the spread of killer diseases. Finally, without normal civilization, animal populations (including mosquitoes, other insects, snakes, and larger wild animals) will grow unchecked. Massive human deaths will come directly by these animals.}
{Death of Believers in the Tribulation - Verses 9-11}
9~~And when He {Jesus Christ}
had broken the fifth seal
{of the Doomsday Book - regenerate martyrs of the Triublation} . . . I {John} saw
under the altar {of burnt offerings/blood sacrifices -
represents martyrdom}
the souls/lives {visible because of interim body}
of those who had been murdered/butchered . . .
because of the Word of God . . . and
because of the testimony/deposition
they had maintained.
{Note: This verse indicates that the martyrs of the Tribulation have not yet received their resurrected bodies, yet John can ‘see’ them. This gives indication that there is a temporary interim body in which believer’s souls are housed until they receive the permanent resurrection body.}
{Note: The Tribulation is a very short 7 years. RBT says that during this period of time, martyrdom apparently counts toward spiritual maturity - meaning Jesus will adjust their rewards accordingly. Volition is . . . ‘the key’ . . . ‘in time’ . . . for all believers (winners and losers) and unbelievers.}
{Imprecatory Prayer - Avenging Yourself through Prayer? - Legitimate? Yes, to Leave it to the Lord}
10~~Furthermore, they shouted/
‘called out with a loud voice’ and said,
“O’ sovereign Lord {despotes} . . .
Holy {integrity of His Deity} and
True {integrity of His Humanity} . . .
how long will it be
before You will judge and
avenge our blood
on the population
of the earth?”
{Note: Despotes is used instead of Kurios (Lord). This places emphasis on Jesus Christ’s unlimited power in His Hypostatic Union. The One Who controls history.}
{Note: This is a valid imprecatory prayer. This is an appeal to the justice of God. It is NOT a request for vengeance. Leaving it in the Hands of the Lord. The battle is the Lord’s. They are ONLY for the age of Israel . . . which includes the Tribulation.}
11~~Also a white robe {interim body}
was given to each one of them {Tribulation martyrs} and
they were informed . . .
that they should refresh/rest {synonym for ‘happiness’}
themselves for a little while longer . . . that is . . .
until their fellow servants . . .
even their brethren . . .
those who were destined to be killed . . .
even as they had been killed . . .
{their martyrdom} should be completed.
{Note: The Tribulational martyrs are told to rest and be refreshed. In the bible, the intake of doctrine was the means of refreshment. They are to relax as the other Tribulational martyrs come to join them. They receive an interim body at this time. RBT says this is the same as believers in the Church Age receiving interim bodies until the Rapture of the Church.}
{Note: See also Joel 2:31.}
12~~Then I looked when He {Jesus Christ}
opened the sixth seal {phenomenal natural disasters and
nuclear activity in the Tribulation} and
a tremendous earthquake/’volcanic eruption’ {seismos}
occurred . . .
with the result that the sun
became black like sackcloth
made of {black goat} hair and
the entire moon
became red like blood {from volcanic ash}.
Note: The Lithosphere is the outer shell of the Earth. There are about a dozen ‘plates’ of land that make up this Lithosphere. As new Lithosphere is created, the old Lithosphere is pushed down . . . that is one plate moves down under the one next to it. As the plates scrape together we have faults and earthquakes and volcanoes along these faults. Seismos is the Greek word for earthquake. It can also include the ground shaking with a volcanic eruption. From the context, we have here a combination of a great earthquake and volcanic eruption in one. In the Tribulation, these activities will be intensified.}
13~~And meteors/stars {aster}
from the sky/heaven
fell on earth . . .
like a fig tree drops its unripe figs {those in the cosmic system}
when being shaken by a great wind {historical disaster}.
{Note: Aster does mean star. Here it means a piece of a star, which we call a meteor. The piece of the start breaks off and comes into the Earth’s atmosphere from the sky or first heaven. This continues the prophecy that in the Tribulation the natural disasters on Earth will continue.}
{Note: The unripe figs represent someone not living a ‘full life’ fulfilling God’s plan for his life. Therefore this is talking about people living in the cosmic system and the rejection of Bible doctrine. The great wind here is the historical disaster that will result when a nation unfaithful to God and His Word. See also Jeremiah 8:13 and Isaiah 34:2 and following; Matthew 21:19.}
14~~Also the atmosphere/heaven was split apart . . .
like a scroll when it is being rolled up {nuclear fusion not fission} . . . with the result that every mountain and
island {the 12ish land mass plates}
were moved out of their places.
{Note: The first heaven is the atmosphere that protects the Earth and is held in place by gravity. RBT says this verse is describing what we now recognize as the effects of nuclear fusion blast. Fusion sucks everything IN instead of nuclear fission that blows/moves everything OUT.}
{SideNote: The second heaven {mentioned in Acts 7:42} is the realm of angelic activity - the stellar universe. The third heaven of Revelation Chapters 4 and 5 is the throne room of God beyond stellar space mentioned also in II Corinthians 12:2.}
{Principal of no Equality on Earth - 6 categories of Inequality}
15~~Both the kings of the earth and
the nobility {political influence} . . .
both the highest military ranks and
the rich . . .
also those who have great ability {includes high IQ or ‘sports athlete’
or ‘movie star’} . . .
plus every slave and
free person {today would be unskilled and skilled labor with reliance
on their Labor Unions to protect them}
hid themselves in caves and
in the large rocks of the mountains.
{Note: The devil is the ruler of the world and he gives preferential treatment to those who deny God’s plan. Also, God has made free will the primary issue of the angelic conflict. Either you will choose for Him or for the plan of the devil (eat from the tree of the knowledge of human good and evil).}
{Note: In context here, these are six categories of arrogant unbelievers each relying on their own human systems for security - country and corporate leaders, aristocracy, military rank, rich, great human talent and Unionized labor. No ‘human status’ or abilities will save the unbeliever without doctrine. Good and bad motivations and good and bad decisions makes the difference. They are all heading for the literal ‘high ground’ but are missing the safety of the ‘spiritual high ground’ of bible doctrine.}
{Desire for the oblivion of Death - So they believe}
16~~And they {6 categories of unbelievers in verse 15}
said {an intense urgent request}
to the mountains and the large rocks,
“Fall on us . . . and
hide us from the presence of Him . . .
Who sits on the throne . . . and/even
from the wrath of the Lamb {Jesus Christ}.”
{Note: These unbelievers are used to commands and controlling their own lives. They are now praying for the oblivion that they believe comes with death. And in their ignorance, they are asking the rocks not God! And their prayers are not going to be answered!}
{Anticipation of the 2nd Advent of Christ and the Day of Judgment}
17~~For the great day
of Their {the Father and the Son} wrath {judgement of the baptism
of fire}
has come.
And so who is able to stand {Chapter 7 answers this question -
No unbeliever}?

I don’t see how your post is relevant to the White Horse Prophecy of Mormonism that states that the US Constitution will hang by a thread and a Mormon will save it - but thanks anyway.
Oh and BTW welcome to FR.
I’m not Mormon.
How about some truth in advertising? Who is RBT?
My pastor teacher for over 30 years (alzheimers now). Teaches the original languages from the Hebrew, Koine Greek, Aramian, Latin etc., of the bible.
The only real truth in this devil’s world.
Welcome to FR...
What denomination is your pastor ????
The present Constitution, with a few alterations of a trifling nature, is just as good as we want; and if it is sustained on this land of Joseph, it will be done by us and our posterity. Prophet Brigham Young, Journal of Discourses, v. 8, p. 324

In other words...
“We will get rid of that pesky 1st Amendment..”
Wow!
Thank the Lord thta today the constitution of the United States is not almost destroyed nor hanging like a thread...
Praise Obama for coming to the rescue!:)
careful this group of anti don’t like decent and will try to run you off as a troll...
They have done this to many new posters!
There is no such thing as an infallible prophet unless you want to include Jesus Christ.
The Prophets of the Lord are human and have the same trial as other children of God they have similar family issues and all the other probationary tempting as their sisters and brothers.
Just because there are no journals around does not mean they never had flaws or trials!
...and so forth.
I'm sure; with you being a MORMON and all; will GLADLY give the new person a LIST of these horrible things that the CHRISTIANS on these threads have done to newbies - RIGHT?
Or, will you; like Joseph Smith; merely make ACCUSATIONS and then trot off to another subject?
That's IT!!
I'm sending this to the BISHOP!!!
You are making us normal Mormons look bad!!

Temple Recommend Questions:
#4 Do you sustain the President of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints as the Prophet, Seer, and Revelator and as the only person on the earth who possesses and is authorized to exercise all priesthood keys? Do you sustain members of the First Presidency and the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles as prophets, seers, and revelators? Do you sustain the other General Authorities and local authorities of the Church? |
Anyone ever notice that TRQ #4 actually is 3 questions?

5. God “organized” the world rather than “creating” it.
6. There is no eternal hell and punishment.
7. Men can become gods.
8. “Intelligences” are eternal.
9. Pre-existing spirits of man.
10. Marriage for eternity.
11. Polygamy is not an abomination in the sight of God.
12. Three degrees of glory.
13. A “mother” in heaven.
14. A “Melchizedek priesthood” consisting of the offices of elder, seventy and high priest.
15. An “Aaronic priesthood” consisting of the offices of deacon, teacher and priest.
16. Blacks were ever to be denied the priesthood.
17. The functions and offices of evangelist, bishoprics, stake presidency,

19. The book of bormon is the “Stick of Joseph.”
I thought of Revelation 6 as well when I read this. But the verse that came to mind was 6:8.
“And I looked, and behold a pale horse: and his name that sat on him was Death, and Hell followed with him.”
