Brigham Young Univ Newspaper Recalled Over "Apostle/Apostate" Mix-up

NEW YORK All copies of the student paper at Brigham Young University have been recalled after a caption labeled a group of Mormon church leaders as "apostates" instead of "apostles."

The paper claims it was typo caused by spell check. Students, the university statement suggests, are "confused" over the matter but some claim paper is known to be "sloppy" anyway. Readers were told to peruse the paper online.

The university explained: "A spelling error appeared in a photo caption in which the word 'apostle' was rendered as 'apostate.' In referring to activities at the General Conference of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints last weekend, the caption read in part, 'Members of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostates and other general authorities raise their hands in a sustaining vote. . . '.”

Brad Rawlins, chair of the Department of Communications said, “We are reprinting the paper and we will have the corrected version back on the racks by mid-afternoon This shows the deep concern we have on the matter. We don’t think this error is glib or cute or humorous. We understand people will take offense to the error. We ourselves are offended as a department for this error. We have a deep regret that it appeared in today’s paper.”

Daryl Gibson, director of NewsNet IT, said this is the first time the paper has been pulled because of a news error in his more than 30 years of working at BYU...

Hillary Miller, a media arts major from Arcadia, Calif., was concerned about the situation. “I hope someone isn’t just fooling around,” she said. “It would be sad if someone was trying to do harm to our church.” According to a formal statement by the Department of Communications, there was no malicious intent.

Carri Jenkins, director of University Communications and assistant to the president, commended the Department of Communications for its quick action.

“It appears this was an honest mistake,” Jenkins said. “The fact that The Daily Universe staff and the Communications Department have acted so quickly shows their concern and the seriousness with which they regard this error.”

Administrators in the Department of Communications said they were interviewing students and staff Monday to determine how the error happened. Apparently a student copy editor used InDesign’s spell check function to check all the photo captions. The student told Evans that InDesign suggested the misspelled word and the student failed to catch the error.

“Clearly this is an unacceptable mistake, and we’ll be spending a great deal of time with our students over the next several weeks to carefully examine our review processes,” Department of Communications administrators said in a formal statement.

The paper claims it was typo caused by spell check.

The typo was caused by people who don't know how to type or can't spell. The paper's staffs' reliance on spell check was the problem.

Ouch. So much for relying on spell check instead of editors.

Ummm..., how do they explain all the errors in Mormonism before there was a “spell checker”... LOL...

Oooopsie.

The kind of mistake I can see myself making very easily, that no spelcheck would ever flag.

(There are other cases where "apostle" has been hijacked by the heterodox.)

Just bury the students at Mountain Meadows and blame the Indians. It worked before.

I can understand how it happened...the mormons give great importance to the great APOSTAcy, that being the whole reason behind the founding of the church.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has proclaimed to the world consistently since its beginning that there was an apostasy of the church founded by Jesus during his Palestinian ministry and led by his Apostles following his ascension. This is a fundamental belief of the Latter-day Saints. If there had not been an apostasy, there would have been no need for a restoration.

With that mind-set, it's not unbelievable that the Apostate/Apostle was made.
