Bishop Lori bows out of Catholic university dinner honoring pro-abortion Kennedy

Bridgeport, Conn., Apr 7, 2009 / 07:04 am (CNA).- Bishop of Bridgeport William Lori has said he will not attend a Sacred Heart University dinner which will honor pro-abortion Catholic Kerry Kennedy, a daughter of Robert F. Kennedy. He also commented on the University of Notre Dame’s invitation to President Barack Obama, saying it was contrary to efforts to resist the president’s “anti-life” policies.

The April 4 edition of the Fairfield County Catholic reported: “Bishop Lori indicated that he will neither support nor attend Sacred Heart University’s Discovery Awards and Scholarship Dinner on April 22 because it will honor Kerry Kennedy, a longtime Catholic pro-choice activist. Bishop Lori is chairman of the Sacred Heart board.”

The Cardinal Newman Society, quoting the Connecticut Post, reported that Kerry Kennedy disagrees with the Catholic position on issues including abortion, embryonic stem cell research, and same-sex “marriage.”

Sacred Heart University, located in Fairfield, Connecticut, previously honored Bishop Lori at its 2004 Discovery Awards and Scholarship Dinner.

Bishop Lori also commented on the invitation of President Barack Obama to the University of Notre Dame to deliver the commencement speech and to receive an honorary degree.

“Notre Dame extended this invitation unilaterally, seemingly without regard for the consequences for the mission of the Catholic Church in the United States. It is contrary to the efforts of bishops, parish priests, and laity to resist the anti-life decisions, policies, and legislation promoted by the Obama administration,” he said in the Fairfield County Catholic.

Patrick Reilly, President of the Cardinal Newman Society, commented on Bishop Lori’s actions, saying:

“The nearly quarter million people who have signed the petition opposing Notre Dame’s honoring of an abortion rights supporter will be thankful for Bishop Lori’s public boycott of Sacred Heart University …SHU and all Catholic colleges must learn from the mistakes at Notre Dame, where defiance toward the U.S. bishops’ speakers and honorees policy has provoked outrage from Catholics nationwide.”

The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops’ 2004 statement “Catholics in Political Life” said Catholic institutions should not honor “those who act in defiance of our fundamental moral principles.”

Pray that these good Bishops will be sustained by the Lord on their path to holiness and will be given even greater courage.

So is she being honored for being an abortion advocate or for being in the lucky sperm contest?

Hey Alex:

Thanks for posting this, I think there are now some 22 Bishops who are now taking the stand. The Catholic Church in this country has tried the charitable approach but I think with Obama, we are coming to a “Julius Caesar and Crossing the Rubicon moment” with Obama’s allowing Tax payer funding for abortions abroad, allowing embryonic stem cell research, which will cause aborted fetuses to be used in this process, and now with the Conscious clause protections about to be overturn, not to mention FOCA, which may be just around the corner, we may finally see the issue of Catholics and Abortion come to full steam.

In God’s providence, having Former St. Louis Archbishop Burke appointed by Pope Benedict as the Chief Canon Lawer in Rome, we may see stronger application of Canon Law 915, which will forbid Pro Abortion politicans from taking Communion. Thus, forcing Catholics to choose their loyalties, the Democratic party or Christ and the CHurch.

Regards

I think we should keep reminding people that Obama supports the murder of babies who survive the abortion process. I can’t see many people supporting that position and it is the most extreme of any abortion position.

True, and the MSM said, “liar liar” when we tried to bring it up, during the campaign!

With more and more people drawing a line in the sand, my hopes are raised that all of us will follow suit.

Please call the White House at 202-456-1111 between the hours of 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. (Eastern Time), Monday through Friday, and register your own request to defeat the “conscientious objection” legislation now poised to be passed in Congress. This little bit of legislation will deny our physicians and hospitals who refuse to perform abortions the right to refuse on the basis of conscience.

It is hard to get through, but please try. The lines are tied up with calls (which is a very healthy sign) that Americans are stepping up, as we did with the amnesty bill, and letting Washington know we are not happy.

If enough of us get involved, we may not have to suffer awards presentations to supporters of abortions and euthanasia wherever they might be invited.

Bravo, Bishop Lori! My wife used to work at the Archdiocese of Washington and knew him before he became a bishop.

For far too long, those that profess abhorring abortion have “gone along to get along” either to curry favor or to keep from making waves. It is nice that someone is finally taking a stand!

I would like to add that Bishop Lori is the Supreme Chaplain of the Knights of Columbus—an organization in which I am proud to be a member. Not all Catholics are liberals. I proudly belong to the Pope Benedict XVI/Knights of Columbus wing of the Catholic Church. We believe in the traditions of our Church and fight the CINOs every day in their efforts to de-Catholicize the Church as well as their intrinsically evil moral relativism.

They must have put some spine strengthener in the water served during the bishops’ ad limina visits with B16.

Or perhaps the USCCB is finally chock full of well-formed bishops after all the appointments of the last 3 decades and the dying off of those appointed in the 60s and 70s, and the (often self-) marginalization of the bad apples that JP2 inadvertantly elevated.

I think this bodes well for the future - both short and long term.
