Conservative author and former House speaker Newt Gingrich will celebrate the Easter season this year in a very special way by converting to Roman Catholicism.
I have become increasingly drawn to Catholicism over the past several years while attending Mass with my wife, Callista, Gingrich tells Newsmax. After prayer and reflection, I believe this is where God has led me. Im looking forward with great joy to being received into full communion with the Catholic Church.
Rumors of the religious conversion began circulating last month when Gingrich, a Baptist since college, told The New York Times that he had been exploring a reaffirmation of the role of religion in public life and found himself increasingly attracted to his wifes Roman Catholic faith.
Gingrich recently criticized the University of Notre Dame for choosing President Barack Obama as a commencement speaker. The Fox News contributor sent messages via micro-blogging service Twitter saying: It is sad to see Notre Dame invite President Obama to give the commencement address since his policies are so anti Catholic values."

That is offensive and insulting, sir.
It never says that St. Mary of Magdala was the woman caught in adultery.
It is “offensive and insulting” to those who honor Rome more than they honor Christ.
That's precisely the point I'm making -- that you didn't fall in love primarily with the Savior, but with the church in Rome. Do you see my perspective? That Christ should take preeminence over Rome?
I wrote exactly like that ten years ago. Then I opened my mind and heart and began an honest inquiry. I did not end up in Rome (I am Orthodox - a bad one) - but, I discarded the ignorant contempt I used to proudly display.
I was already in love with the Savior. BTW, I don’t mind your being critical, but I think you should avoid using the h-e-double hockey sticks word when discussing God’s church - in any of it’s denominations. It brings Jack Chick to mind.
First of all, its not clear that Mary Magdalene is the subject of John 8. Thats merely tradition.
Second, there is nothing in the context of John 8 that suggests its OK to continue on the with the adulterous affair, going so far as to divorce your spouse to marry the one you have been fornicating with. I wonder if adulterer and adulteress were attending Mass together.
I trust that Newt and his third bride have found true repentance and conversion to faith in Jesus Christ.
How about before college?
Ah, then in that case you obviously misinterpreted the passage.
In the context, the Pharisees brought the woman to Jesus to catch Him on a matter of the law. Their problem was that they were not fulfilling the requirements of the law which was that both parties in the adulterous affair were to be stoned to death (Lev. 20:10). They only produced the woman. Clearly justice could not be done in this case. An accuser had to cast the first stone (Deut. 17:7), but since no accuser was innocent with regard to the facts and procedure in the case, no one was suitable to cast the first stone.
The watch word still is go and sin no more, not take the adulterous partner as your new wife.
You passed judgment & smeared Gingrich & his wife and you don't even have the decency to admit it and apologize.
Run along and quit bothering me...
shezzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz...
Welcome to FR. I figured that was the case when you first chimed in.
Hey, genius, FYI, this is MY thread and you were the one to “first chime in”...
“You man the same Callista that he was having an affair with while still married to his second wife?”
wipe your nose, junior
This is an interesting development. I remember that the late Lee Atwater also converted. I join all other Freepers in wishing the Speaker well.
Doesn’t bother me in the least. What does bother me is the nasty comments about it, I think a person’s religious choice is between him/her and God and no one else.
I really wish everone would give the potential 2012 candidate stuff a rest and actually wait until the debates begin to line up and start the regularly scheduled bouts on FR.
My mom is Catholic, she was married before my father and got it annulled. She didn’t marry my dad in the church and they will divorce soon. I bet she will still take communion. They don’t enforce that.
