Catholic academic ayatollah shows true colors

Catholic academic ayatollah shows true colors
Cardinal Newman Society uses McCarthyite tactics to promote a fundamentalist agenda

Four years ago I put a theoretical question to Patrick Reilly, president of the Virginia-based Cardinal Newman Society and self-appointed ayatollah to Catholic academia in this country. Reilly is back in the news today because President Obama will deliver the commencement address at the University of Notre Dame in May. The overseer of false orthodoxy doesn’t like that one bit....

Founded in 1993 by the Fordham-educated Reilly, the Society claims it is dedicated to strengthening Catholic identity at America’s Catholic colleges and universities. In reality, as Cardinal Newman rolls over in his recently relocated grave, Reilly uses the cardinal’s good name to promote the idea of university as Catholic madrassa.

My question to Reilly: How would he respond if then-president George W. Bush was invited to give a Catholic college commencement address? (Bush did not speak at a Catholic school that year.)

It was a trick question, designed, at some later date, to illustrate the truth about the Society’s McCarthyite tactics and fundamentalist agenda. The question had a context. Reilly is frequently “scandalized” and appears to live in a constant state of “outrage.”

...Here’s what is really going on. Ayatollah Reilly searches for hot button issues on Catholic campuses -- anything that has to do with gays gets them excited, as do performances of “The Vagina Monologues” and, of course, pro-choice speakers (few of whom actually even discuss abortion in their presentations) – that will energize their base of donors and activists. Then they highlight these offenses on the Web and through direct mail to generate revenue....

A defense of the truth becomes McCarthyism, we are living in dangerous times.

I have never heard this “magazine” so I went to their web page. It is all leftist propaganda disguised as religious reporting. This “National Catholic Reporter” is probably funded by some leftist group and does not include any sincere people of faith among its writers.

Read the article.
The man is a tool.
He is as Catholic as my dog.
Some of the posters on his article show how far the Catechism has slipped from being taught.
In that sense it is the Bishops of the past forty years fault for not teaching the faith.

Is the Newman Society for Catholic colleges any relation to the Newman Clubs in non-Catholic colleges?

No. And that's too bad.

There are a LOT of Newman Clubs, the first ones were started in the 1890's and they linked together nationwide in the 1920's, but --- depending on the campus ---- their defense of coherent Catholicism for years has been occasional and dicey.

The "Cardinal Newman Society," in contrast, was founded in 1993 and dedicated to the renewal of Catholic identity on Catholic campuses, especially by upholding Catholic Faith and Morals: that's their whole purpose.

They're hot.

I saw some of the reponses of those "catholics" of NCR online.

They certainly have abandoned truth. My goodness... where in the name of sam hill are these people in their beliefs?

I don't get it?!

There is nothing Catholic about the National anti-Catholic Reporter.

The point about inviting Bush vs. inviting Obama is worth addressing, but the fact that the Cardinal Newman Society objects to the latter, but not the former defeats rather than supports NCR’s ugly epithet of “ayatollah”.

Indeed it is true that neither was Bush an exponent of Catholic belief system, as the article points out. What this shows is that the Newman Society is prepared to facilitate and expression of a non-Catholic point of view on its premises, such as Bush’s. It is not prepared to similarly facilitate the transmission of an anti-Catholic point of view such as Obama’s. Now, the question becomes, What Would The Ayatollah Do?

One wonders if these people at NCR even support or recognize today's Feast of the Annunciation?

How telling that this debate occurs today. Chilling, indeed.

Because all created things are ultimately Catholic,
perhaps it would be more accurate (and more fair to your dog) to say:

“his awareness of being Catholic is the same as my dog’s”

;o)

I know you’re not doing this Pyro, but I want to take the opportunity to be sure no one confuses the apostate National Catholic Reporter with the orthodox National Catholic Register.

If you are searching for a good national paper, the Register is very good. Don’t be fooled by the name “Catholic” in the other paper. It should be forced to remove the name!

Feuerherd's piece is hysterical. He knows that he has no argument on the subject of what the Church teaches so he resorts to name calling; "Ayatollah"......"McCarthyite.......etc"

The problem here is that the counter revolution has now begun in earnest and is gathering steam under BXVI. The liberals and dissenters were under the impression that victory was assured. Any signs of remaining resistance really puts a wedgie in their pants. The irony in Feuerhard's piece of course, is that the dissenters will brook no dissent. Anyone taking them to task had better look out.

Hey Joe, the cafeteria is closing in five minutes........LOL!!

You’re on to something. “National Katholic” reminds me of the “national catholic” of communist china. There is a striking similarity in the attempt to attach communist dogma to a church.
