.- The eagerly anticipated appointment of the new Archbishop of New York appears to be just around the corner. The well-connected Italian journalist Paolo Rodari, who writes for Il Reformista, is reporting that Archbishop Timothy Dolan of Milwaukee will soon be announced as the new head of the most important U.S. diocese.
Church watchers have been itching to hear who will replace Cardinal Edward Egan for almost two years and as Rodari reports, "the announcement should arrive shortly."
Rumors have been circulating with increasing frequency over the past several weeks, including a January 29 report by Edward Pentin on Newsmax.com that pointed speculation in the direction of Dolan.
Rodari reports today that Il Riformista has "collected leaks" that say "Pope Benedict XVI has decided on Archbishop Timothy Dolan of Milwaukee."
Rodari also claims that although other American prelates would have preferred a stronger personality to take on the Obama Administrations animus towards Catholics, Dolan is being tapped as a pastoral leader with a "soft touch."
Agreeing with Pentins earlier report, Rodari says that Archbishop of Hartford Henry Mansell, Archbishop of Atlanta Wilton Gregory, Archbishop of Newark John Myers and the Archbishop of San Juan, Puerto Rico Roberto Gonzalez Nieves, were all in the running.
Keep praying for this outcome!
Dang. He’ll be missed greatly here in Milwaukee.
This Bishop will shake things up but it will be diffucult! The NYT’s will be whining all the Time!
But a very good and important selection for NY.
He’ll definitely be an improvement over Cardinal Egan, but it would have seemed just if Bishop Mansell, a native, and Cardinal O’Connor’s pick were to have become archbishop.
Huh??? Which "other American prelates"? None spring to mind . . .
I’d rather see Abp. Chaput in New York. Well, really, I wanted to see him in Washington, D.C., but New York would be good, too.
If Abp. Burke wasn’t at the Apostolic Signatura, he’d be my first choice.
Archbishop Chaput
Bishop Bruskewitz
Bishop Vasa
Bishop Martino
Others can probably add to this list.
Please!
Abp Chaput.
The last thing we need to see is the Vatican deciding on “a soft line with Obama” as the Italian press is reporting.
If the CLERGY can’t stand up to the Abortionist-in-Chief unequivocally - not softly - what are the laity supposed to do?
Chaput needs to replace Mahoney in LA. How many more years are the Catholics of the LA Archdiocese going to have to suffer through this man. Every Catholic in LA should receive a plenary indulgence for having to live through Roger’s years as Archbishop.
I would strongly support such an indulgence.
I think he's tops!
They didn't pick Obama? There will be some disappointment.
If he can not take on the relatively weak ‘Catholic’ Gov. of Colorado, Bill Ritter, how do you expect him to perform in the NYC pressure cooker?
Sursum Corda
"Dolan's nickname is DARF - the sound he makes when he chuckles, which he does a lot .... He's the typical NACer graduate Bishop: a back-slapping, glad-handing politician."
Sounds as if he'll be as effective communicating with Obama as George What's-His-Name out in San Fran has been in his legendary "dialogue" with Pelosi.
Ecce sacerdos magnus in American English is apparently translated Trite, Bright and Inoffensive.
Ditto. From what I understand, one of the reasons Dolan has been chosen is because there is still a large Irish population in NYC. No doubt there is more to it than just that but it should be interesting to see how he handles the abuses up here in Albany and Rochester and other dioceses within this jurisdiction. We need someone who can navigate the waters of progressiveness that permeate this state.
You make a good point. I thought he was a bit better than that.
OK...how about Bishop Finn?
ROFL!!! Hey ... some of us have suffered equal punitive damages under our bishops here in Albany and Rochester NY.
