Bishop-elect James S. Wall
Phoenix, Feb 5, 2009 / 11:33 am (CNA).- This morning, the Holy Father appointed a Phoenix priest, Fr. James S. Wall as the new bishop of Gallup, New Mexico.  Fr. Wall, 44, will be the diocese’s fourth bishop.

Fr. Wall, the current Vicar for Priests for the Diocese of Phoenix, was born in 1964 in Gando, Arizona on the Navajo reservation.  After studying History at Arizona State University, he went on to earn a Master of Divinity degree from St. John Seminary in Camarillo California, Jim Dwyer from the Diocese of Phoenix told CNA.

He was then ordained a priest for the Diocese of Phoenix in 1998.

Since then, Fr. Wall has served several parishes and is currently both the Vicar of Priests for the diocese and the Director of Mount Claret Retreat Center in Phoenix.

The bishop-elect will continue his duties in the Diocese of Phoenix until he is consecrated as a bishop. The date for his consecration is not yet determined.

Bishop-elect Wall will fill the position left vacant when Bishop Donald E. Pelotte, who retired in April 2008.  Bishop Pelotte attracted national attention when, in 2007, he fell down the stairs in his home, causing doctors to suspect he was the victim of an assault.  The bishop maintained he was not attacked by anyone.

Later that year, Bishop Pelotte went on medical leave, and since January 2008, Bishop Thomas Olmstead from the Diocese of Phoenix has overseen the diocese.

Bishop-elect Wall will serve 58,000 Catholics and 53 priests.

A wonderful choice. He is intelligent, orthodox, kind and most and best of all, holy. Father Wall was an assistant pastor in my parish and then pastor of a neighoring parish.

He is much like Bishop Olmsted who is bringing back Catholicism to our diocese, gently and steadily. Bishop Olmsted has been temporarily charged with the responsibility of the Gallup diocese,we will be happy to have him back full time.

BTW Gallup's gain of a good and holy Bishop means the loss of a wonderful priest in the Phoenix diocese,I guess nothing wonderful is without at least a little cloud.

No,Mater Misercordia uses the beautiful church that Father Wall once pastored. I think the original arrangements to use St. Thomas the Apostle were made when Father Wall was pastor but when Mater Misercordia was established it was served by priests from the FSSP.

Currently the pastor of the MM is Father Fryar,he has been the pastor for at least two years and does a wonderful job,he is as I mentioned in the previous paragraph,is from FSSP. We are very fortunate to have priests like both Father Wall and Father Fryar in our diocese, may God bless them both as well as our Bishop Olmsted.

Not that this matters at all either, but I personally think that Bishop-elect Wall has a great, genuine smile.

Pelotte was beaten. I saw his pictures and there is NO WAY that falling down the stairs could have made such massive injuries. There has been much talk that he was beaten by the father of an altar boy.

The police department wouldn't release the photographs until the local newspaper sued to have them released. The church got Pelotte out of town as soon as he could travel. First he went to Phoenix and then he went to FL and remained there until he came back and resigned. I think he moved back to FL where he owns a house.

I knew him when he was just “Jim” without the “Fr.” He’s a great guy and will be a good bishop.

Hey, we want Priests like him to become Bishop! The sacrifice is worth it!

Seriously, I oftentimes hit the 5:00 daily Mass at St. Thomas. Heard him give many solid homilies over the years.

**Fr. Wall, the current Vicar for Priests for the Diocese of Phoenix**

A Vocations man. This bodes well for the Gallup, New Mexico, Diocese.
