Pope Benedict XVI is set to announce a new Archbishop of New York to replace Cardinal Edward Egan, an informed Vatican source tells Newsmax.
Speaking on condition of anonymity, the source says the decision was made today and an announcement is expected within the next week to ten days. He says Cardinal Egans successor is from the conservative and orthodox wing of the Church.
Speculation on the next leader of the New York Archdiocese, one of the most important posts in the U.S. Roman Catholic Church, has been going on for some time among church-watchers.
Cardinal Egan, 76, submitted his resignation in 2007 when he reached the mandatory retirement age of 75, but the Pope asked him to stay on in the post. Many commentators saw Pope Benedict XVIs visit to New York last year as a final farewell to the cardinal.
Names often cited as Egans possible successor include Archbishop Harry Mansell of Hartford, Archbishop Timothy Dolan of Milwaukee, Archbishop Wilton Gregory of Atlanta, Archbishop John Myers of Newark, Archbishop Roberto Gonzalez Nieves of San Juan.
Cardinal William Levada, prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, has also been named as a potential candidate in the past, however the new archbishop will not be him, according to the source.
The Pope has chosen an archbishop who is dynamic, conservative and orthodox, he says traits which Vatican watchers say best match those of Archbishop Dolan. The 59 year old prelate is said to be good with the media, genuine, and intelligent. He also has Irish ancestry, a common characteristic of previous archbishops of New York.

Whaddya mean? It would be HISTORIC!
“conservative and orthodox” wing?
What other wing is there besides the separated wing?
Bishop Hubbard in Albany has been a disaster — as you know, too well! — and Matthews in Rochester have been disasters, so I think the Pope will not appoint a lefty to New York.
. . . we can only hope . . . .
My dad used to say that the only way to get rid of certain politicians was to kick them upstairs to Washington D.C., but New York would certainly be far enough away.
Abp. Gregory is not a really good fit for Atlanta.
I thought I read on a FR thread that it may be bishop serratelli from the paterson, nj diocese. Did nyer or someone else post it? or did I read it in the newspaper.
Prayers,prayers, prayers.
The archbishops you listed were mainly silent on the abortion issue. How about someone like Archbishop Chaput?I hope Archbishop Burke has a lot to say in the new appointment.
Archbishop Wilton Gregory of Atlanta
Pentin contradicts himself.
Chaput is not that conservative or orthodox; re his not so covert suppression of Summorum Pontificum in the Archdiocese of Denver as only one example.
Archbishop Chaput has been one of the bishops who has spoken out publically on issues of importance to traditional Catholics.
Do you live in his Archdiocese and have you spoken to him personally or are you basing your opinion on what you’ve read about him?
Mansell is not conservative, he presided over, supported and, insured the liberalization of the only Catholic seminary in western NY (Christ the King).
I was a lay student there and a fried of mine was getting his M. Div for his Unitarian universalist church.
Frequently he and I were the ones explaining and defending authentic Catholic teaching to seminarians studying for the priesthood.
Put up a better name than Archbishop Chaput or for that matter Archbishop Burke.
This could not be related to the earlier thread, which said BAD news was coming soon regarding a prominent church leader. I take that to mean either a serious illness or a scandal. This is neither.

Now answer the questions I posed to you.
Which candidate is 59 years old?
Archbishop Dolan turns 59 on Friday: http://www.catholic-hierarchy.org/bishop/bdolan.html
Archbishop Gonzales Nieves is 58 1/2.
These bishops came much later in that list of over 100 Bishops who spoke out about life being the primary issue in the election.
Archbishop Wilton Gregory georgiabulletin.org ...
Archbishop Dolan http://www.jsonline.com/news/opinion/32482989.html.
Burke is in Rome.
