I read about this in the European press this morning. At least this guy - Wils - was honest enough to leave. The problem is the ones who stay, even though their idea of the Church bears no resemblance to what it is or has ever been historically.
I don’t know what real world you live in. Are you Catholic? It’s certainly big news in the Church right now. And it’s all over the secular leftie press, which is trying to stir up the Jews and portray Catholics as anti-Semites, so I hardly see how you could have missed it if you live in any real world.
The online “Catena Aurea” is very nice indeed. Is it your project?
Williamson’s denial of the Holocaust and its gas chambers are indeed “shocking” and “totally ahistoric”, but they are not formally schismatic.
Williamson and the others in SPPX were excommunicated for schism, not for being idiots. Now they are being re-communicated, and - again - being an idiot isn’t relevant.
I harbour a suspicion that these folks are upset on account of SSPX’s views on theology and liturgy, not Williamson’s historical idiocy.
It is remarkable that most teeth-gnashing is coming from the areas where the faith has been the weakest: the Netherlands in Europe, Boston in the States. Where was that professor when a Dutch bishop proposed calling God allah?
I hate to say it, but isn’t this the behavior of a bully? He wants to be allowed his own way, but not allow anyone else the same. Needless to say, we should pray for him to return to the Church.

No, the project is not mine and I don't know who is behind it. It appears that the text was either scanned in or dictated, so there are textual imperfections. I still love it.

It is the parts of the world in which the Holocaust is the only moral absolute admitted which is most exercised by denial of historical fact.
Few there would be similarly upset if someone, for instance, claimed that the Mongols killed only 5000 in the sack of Samarkand instead of 50,000, or that only 800,000 died in the Ukrainian Terror Famine. It’s because of the fundamental ethical and moral importance of the Holocaust in their own worldview that presumably otherwise debatable historical facts become moral dogma.
That’s definitely what’s bothering them. Funny, because it really doesn’t have any impact on them; the Pope is not making Fellay head of the office of liturgy or bishop of some major European see anytime soon! But the people who are getting hysterical are doing so beause they know they’re wrong, and that’s why the feel so threatened by the mere hint of opposition to their program.
Maybe it’s not news in Chicago and you’ll have to do a wider search. There’ve been editorials about it in major US papers, articles even in places like Israeli newspapers, the Miami Herald, etc. Try looking for SSPX and see if the Chicago papers noticed that one and for some reason their search engine doesn’t turn up Williamson.
Believe me, this is not a trivial issue. Or at any rate, the reaction to it is not trivial, and it’s not diminishing, so it’s still newsworthy and post worthy.
This is what I tried to explain to my mother, but she just kept saying how bad this all looks. We are both Catholic, by the way.
BUT ... sooner or later, a priest from the rehabilitated SSPX, or from FSSP or ICK or St. John Cantius or some such WILL be consecrated a bishop. The liberals can see it coming ... and it's giving them heartburn.

There is some theology being developed by SSPX as regards the Church vs. the Synagogue that is relevant to their full communion. If you read around their website, you’ll find articles that view the persecution of the Early Church by the Sanhedrin in terms of eschatological struggle that is on-going, and morphing into the present day struggle of the Church with the carnal, neo-pagan culture.
If the views of bp. Williamson were plain historical revisionism, they would not be terribly relevant, but that theological bend in the SSPX might, at first reading, at least, look anti-Semitic. Together, they present perfect ingredients for another media scandal for the Church.
