Mary Immaculate: Patroness of the United States [Catholic/Orthodox Caucus]

Mary, mother of Jesus, as the Immaculate Conception.

Mary Immaculate:

Patroness of the United States

A patron is like a sponsor, someone who takes responsibility for another, who protects

another. Catholics rely on our patron saints not only to inspire our lives by their example

but also to pray for us and protect us in our life of grace. A patron looks out for us, sometimes

in ways we don’t always recognize.  Mary Immaculate was officially declared the

patroness of the United States in 1847. A year earlier, the U.S. bishops had written to the

Catholics of this country: We take this occasion to communicate

to you the determination, unanimously  adopted by us, to place ourselves and all

entrusted to our charge throughout the United States under the special patronage

of the holy Mother of God, whose Immaculate Conception is venerated

by the piety of the faithful throughout the Catholic Church. By the aid of her prayers,

we entertain the confident hope that we will be strengthened to perform the

arduous duties of our ministry, and that you will be enabled to practice the sublime

virtues, of which her life presents the most  perfect example.

Even earlier, in 1843, shortly after coming to Chicago as its first Bishop, William Quarter

wrote that he placed the new diocese, which was then the entire state of Illinois, under the

protection of “the Immaculate Mother of God.” Cardinal Bernardin recalled this

dedication on the occasion of the 150th anniversary of the Archdiocese in 1993.

In 1849, the U.S. bishops asked the Pope to declare the Catholic belief that the Blessed

Virgin Mary was free of sin from the first moment of her conception to be a dogma

of the Church. When the Holy Father did so in 1854, the Bishops of this country

decided that December 8 would be observed in every diocese as a holy day of obligation.

This year, 2004, we celebrate the 150th anniversary of Pope Pius IX’s declaration that

Mary’s Immaculate Conception is a dogma of the faith, a belief that every Catholic must

hold as integral to the faith that comes to us from the apostles.

This faith had shaped the American continent long before there was a United States of

America. In all the lands of North and South and Central America colonized by France

and Spain, devotion to Mary marked the lives of the people. In the British colonies, where

the public practice of Catholicism was forbidden, any external sign of love for Jesus’

mother was impossible. Still, the Catholics of the newly independent United States

were instructed in 1792 by their first Bishop, John Carroll:

I shall only add this my earnest request, that to the exercise of the sublimest

virtues, faith, hope and charity, you will join a fervent and well regulated devotion

to the Holy Mother of Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ; that you will place great

confidence in her in all your necessities.

Having chosen her the special patroness of this Diocese [the whole country at that

time], you are placed, of course, under her powerful protection; and it becomes your

duty to be careful to deserve its continuance by a zealous imitation of her virtues and

a reliance on her motherly superintendence.  Imitating Mary’s virtues is easier than reading

Bishop John Carroll’s eighteenth-century prose! His instructions about praying to Mary,

however, were well received in the eighteenth century and reinforced by the devotional

practices of the many Catholic immigrants who began to come to the United States early

in the following century.

There is some irony in the choice of Mary  Immaculate as our patroness. One of the

hallmarks of our society is self-reliance, getting the job done on your own, being

independent and doing things your own way.  The meaning of the dogma of the Immaculate

Conception is that Mary was always totally dependent on God, that her mission in life

was given to her, and that she never did anything on her own but always did things

God’s way. Never touched by sin, nothing in her resisted God’s will for her and for the

salvation of the world through her Son.

Of the few words attributed to her in the Gospels, the most basic is, “Let it be done

to me according to your word.” From this free decision on her part flows her instruction

to the servants at the wedding feast of Cana, “Do whatever he tells you.”

Mary Immaculate is our patroness. She speaks to us of God’s initiative in her life and

ours; she witnesses to the primacy of grace in her life and ours. She tells us, proud of our

own initiatives, to do it God’s way.

December Devotion: The Immaculate Conception

Since the 16th century Catholic piety has assigned entire months to special devotions. The month of December is traditionally dedicated to the Immaculate Conception. The Blessed Virgin Mary, in the first moment of her conception, by a singular privilege of Almighty God, and in view of the merits of Jesus Christ, our Savior and hers, was preserved from all stain of original sin. This age-old belief of the Church was defined by Pope Pius IX in 1854 as an article of revealed truth.

Mary was in need of redemption and she was indeed redeemed by the Precious Blood of Jesus Christ. The manner of Mary's redemption, however, was unique. Instead of being freed from original sin after having contracted it, she was preserved from contracting it. This was a most fitting favor for the Mother of the Redeemer.

INVOCATION
O Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee.

TO THE VIRGIN IMMACULATE
O Virgin Immaculate, Mother of God and my Mother, from thy sublime height turn upon me thine eyes of pity. Filled with confidence in thy goodness and knowing full well thy power, I beseech thee to extend to. me thine assistance in the journey of life, which is so full of dangers for my soul. And in order that I may never be the slave of the devil through sin, , but may ever live with my heart humble and pure, I entrust myself wholly to thee. I consecrate my heart to thee for ever, my only desire being to love thy divine Son Jesus. Mary, none of thy devout servants has ever perished; may I too be saved. Amen.

PRAYER OF PRAISE
O pure and immaculate and likewise blessed Virgin, who art the sinless Mother of thy Son, the mighty Lord of the universe, thou who art inviolate and altogether holy, the hope of the hopeless and sinful, we sing thy praises. We bless thee, as full of every grace, thou who didst bear the God-Man: we all bow low before thee; we invoke thee and implore thine aid. Rescue us, 0 holy and inviolate Virgin, from every necessity that presses upon us and from all the temptations of the devil. Be our intercessor and advocate at the hour of death and judgment; deliver us from the fire that is not extinguished and from the outer darkness; make us worthy of the glory of thy Son, O dearest and most clement Virgin Mother. Thou indeed art our only hope, most sure and sacred in God's sight, to whom be honor and glory, majesty and dominion for ever and ever world without end. Amen.
Saint Ephrem the Syrian

PRAYER OF POPE PIUS XII
This prayer, dedicated to Mary Immaculate, was composed by the Pope for the Marian Year (December 8, 1953-December 8, 1954), which was proclaimed to mark the centenary of the definition of the dogma of the Immaculate Conception.

Enraptured by the splendor of your heavenly beauty, and impelled by the anxieties of the world, we cast ourselves into your arms, 0 Immacuate Mother of Jesus and our Mother, Mary, confident of finding in your most loving heart appeasement of our ardent desires, and a safe harbor from the tempests which beset us on every side.

Though degraded by our faults and overwhelmed by infinite misery, we admire and praise the peerless richness of sublime gifts with which God has filled you, above every other mere creature, from the first moment of your conception until the day on which, after your assumption into heaven, He crowned you Queen of the Universe.

O crystal fountain of faith, bathe our minds with the eternal truths! O fragrant Lily of all holiness, captivate our hearts with your heavenly perfume! 0 Conqueress of evil and death, inspire in us a deep horror of sin, which makes the soul detestable to God and a slave of hell!

O well-beloved of God, hear the ardent cry which rises up from every heart. Bend tenderly over our aching wounds. Convert the wicked, dry the tears of the afflicted and oppressed, comfort the poor and humble, quench hatreds, sweeten harshness, safeguard the flower of purity in youth, protect the holy Church, make all men feel the attraction of Christian goodness. In your name, resounding harmoniously in heaven, may they recognize that they are brothers, and that the nations are members of one family, upon which may there shine forth the sun of a universal and sincere peace.

Receive, O most sweet Mother, our humble supplications, and above all obtain for us that, one day, happy with you, we may repeat before your throne that hymn which today is sung on earth around your altars: You are all-beautiful, O Mary! You are the glory, you are the joy, you are the honor of our people! Amen.

Remember, O most gracious Virgin Mary, that never was it known that anyone who fled to thy protection, implored thy help, or sought thine intercession was left unaided.

Inspired by this confidence, I fly unto thee, O Virgin of virgins, my mother; to thee do I come, before thee I stand, sinful and sorrowful. O Mother of the Word Incarnate, despise not my petitions, but in thy mercy hear and answer me.

Amen.

My better half is HTML challenged, so I'm adding this at her request:

Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception
Patroness of the United States of America
Protect our nation from all harm, physical and spiritual.

The Hour of Grace on December 8

During the Hour of Grace, many spiritual graces would be granted. The most hard-hearted sinners will be touched by the grace of God." The Blessed Mother promised that whatever a person asked her for during this Hour of Grace (even in impossible cases) would be granted to them, if it was in accordance with the Will of the Eternal Father.

Has this been approved by the Church? I notice that the dates (of apparitions) have ceased, and that is usually, after a study, that a pronouncement is made.

The Hour of Grace on December 8

Request of Our Heavenly Mother for the Hour of Grace:

1. To be started from 12 noon until 1 p.m. (one full hour of prayer);

2. During this hour the person making the Hour of Grace either at home or in a church must put away all distractions;

3. Begin the Hour of Grace by praying three times the 51st Psalm with outstretched arms;

4. The rest of the Hour of Grace may be spent in silent communication with God, adoring the Sacred Host, meditating upon the Passion of Jesus, saying the Holy Rosary, praising God in you own way or by using favourite prayers, singing hymns, etc.

Acknowledgements: A very special gratitude to the Felician Sisters in general who printed the following story in their Ave Maria magazine and who so graciously translated this story from the Polish into English in order to comply with the request of the Blessed Virgin Mary that this message be sent throughout the whole world. Please give Our Lady or any one trying to promote this Hour of Grace the great benefits of doubt. In fact, it is the person making this Hour of Grace who is receiving from himself or herself such immense benefits of doubt. For verification, contact Our Lady of Victory P.O. Box 158, Circle Pines, Minnesota 55014. We are just helping to promote this important message on the internet.

History: During the period of November 24 1946 to December 8, 1947, the Blessed Mother appeared to Sister Pierina in a little church in Montichiari, Italy, eleven times.

On the first appearance the Blessed Mother told Sister Pierina She wanted to be known as the Mystical Rose and that an hour of grace should be kept at noon, December 8th, in all the Catholic Churches of the world. The Blessed Mother wanted this to be known through all Italy, and the entire world.

It was November 16, 1947 when Sister Pierina was finishing Her Thanksgiving after Holy Communion when she saw a great light. She then saw a vision of the Blessed Mother as the Mystical Rose.

Sister was so deeply moved by the stunning beauty of Our Lady that she began talking to Her. All of a sudden a gentle force made her kneel down in front of Our Lady. The Blessed Mother spoke these words. "My Son is so greatly offended by the sins of impurity. He is already planning to send the deluge upon the people, for their destruction, but I have asked Him to show mercy, and not send the destruction. So that is why I have appeared, to ask for penance and atonement for the sins of impurity."

On the 22nd of November, Sister Pierina felt the overwhelming urge to go to church at 4:00. The Mother Superior, four Sisters, and a group of friends accompanied her. They were all saying the Rosary when the Blessed Mother appeared as before.

Again, Our Lady asked for penance. She said, "Penance is nothing more than accepting all our crosses daily willingly. No matter how small, accept them with love." At this time She told Sister Pierina to come again on December 8th at noon. "This will be my Hour of Grace." The Sister asked how she was to prepare for this Hour of Grace? To which the Blessed Mother said, "with prayers and penance. Pray the 51st psalm with outstretched arms three times.

On the morning of December 8th, people began arriving at the little church at 8:00 in the morning form neighbouring towns. By noon, some 10,000 people had gathered to see the Blessed Mother… In the most gentle and loving voice, Our Lady smiled ad began to speak [to Sister Pierina]: "I am the Immaculate Conception, the Mother of my Beloved Son, Jesus. I want to be known as the Mystical Rose. My wish is that every year on the 8th of December, at noon, an Hour of Grace will be installed. Many spiritual graces and physical blessings will be received by those who pray, undisturbed, during this hour."

Another lovely post, Salvation. Thank you. Just got back from Mass, it was packed. I went a half hour early, the naysayers in my family said I was nuts, but I just knew this year it was going to be filled, and it was.

Thank you for this beautiful thread.

My husband and I went to Mass for the Holy Day, and like other Holy Day Masses, it seems only about half of the amount of worshipers attend the Hold Day Masses, as attend the Sunday Masses.

Do not Catholics know it is obligatory for them to go to these Masses, just as it is to go to Mass on Sundays. Perhaps the priests need to remind them.

Yes, most do not know that it is a Holy Day of Obligation. The point is, however, did the priest do a little catechizing on it and emphasize that the Immaculate Conception is the patroness of the United States, and we need her now more than ever to intercede for us.

Our priest did it without being pushy — and my post above tells you how it turned out.

“and we need her now more than ever to intercede for us.”

This is so true, we need her now more than ever to intercede for us.

But I wish more Catholics were at the Mass to hear that message, and I wish priests would emphasize before the Holy Day how important it is for Catholics to attend these Masses.

This particular apparition has not been approved, although the title of the Blessed Mother as “Mystical Rose” is, as you know, in the Litany of Loreto.
