Conservatives Upset With Episcopal Church Break off, Form Rival Religion

WHEATON, Ill. — Theological conservatives upset by the liberal views of the Episcopal Church are forming a rival denomination. The new Anglican Church in North America will include four Episcopal dioceses that recently split from the U.S. church, along with breakaway Anglican parishes from Canada. The announcement Wednesday in Wheaton, Ill., comes after decades of debate over what Episcopalians should believe about issues ranging from salvation to sexuality. Tensions erupted in 2003 when Episcopalians consecrated the first openly gay bishop. The world Anglican Communion is a fellowship of churches with roots in the Church of England. The Episcopal Church is the Anglican body in the United States. But the new North American church says it represents true Anglican beliefs.

Good deal! Glad to see it. The Episcopals were warned this would happen if they departed from Christian teaching, but nominated a gay bishop anyway. So now the church is splintering. Toldja!!

Gay bishop was definitely a line in the sand but the fact that the American Episcopal denies much of the bible as mere "suggestions" and disputes basic Christianity tenets, set up the fall.

Churches all over America are either moving or purchasing their property from the Episcopal Church and aligning themselves with the Anglican Church but not the liberal one as defined by the church in England.

Good news

As a conservative ELCA member I may now have a place to turn too after next year ELCA general assembly meeting. I expect the ELCA to walk the same dark path as the liberal Episcopal church is walking.

This is definitely good news and it is in progress. It will be refreshing to many of us.

I’ve been keeping up with this situation only tentatively in the past few years. I’m wondering if there is any chance this new body will gain official recognition from the C of E.

Is it possible that some provinces in the Anglican Communion might recognize this new body instead of the Episcopal Church and the Anglican Church in Canada? Makes for a very, very, interesting eccleisal situation in the Anglican Communion and, doubtlessly, will make for an interesing discussion at the next Lambeth Council....

Any news about whether any of the smaller Continuing Anglican organizations who already broke away are going to come back into communion with this new group?

They should know better at Fox than call it “rival religion”. The text has it correct, “rival denomination”.

And really, they’re not even another denomination, unless one believes that the Episcopalians are no longer Anglican (which is indeed debatable).

It’s an administrative issue, not a denominational one.

The "gay is OK" path?

Buddy of mine just about quit from his ELCA church over that, when some now departed pastor started saying that. To keep the family peace (joined the wife's church when they married) he stayed on. Looks like the problem's going to come back for him.

If you want accurate, conservative, divine liturgy, and historical doctrine without liberal compromise, join the Orthodox Church.

TEC's version of "The Church's One Foundation":

The Church's Unfoundation

The Anglican Communion
Was mightily distressed
When bishops of ECUSA
Their heresies expressed,
And in Convention showed not
Repentance or regret,
But chose to walk their own path,
Firm in their own ways set.

Political correctness
And chic diversity –
These are our church's hallmarks,
And quite our cup of tea.
We follow where the winds blow,
We are the church of NOW.
We're new Episcopalians
And trendier than thou.

Our gospel is inclusive.
(The other one's passé.)
We welcome all the sexes,
Transgendered, lesbigay.
And though we're loudly preaching
Our relevant good news,
We are a tad perplexed by
So many empty pews.

"To God alone be glory" -
This used to be our song.
With Katharine Jefferts Schori
It likely won't be long
Before we change our story
And sing another tune -
Not Father, Son and Spirit,
But Mother, Child and Womb.

Our church has no foundation
And Christ is not her Lord.
She is our new creation
By our own mighty word.
The Bible's too oppressive,
And morals leave us bored.
Who then is our salvation?
It's our own selves - adored

That raises the question, Which Orthodox Church? There are several in the United States. This of course is non-canonical, but overlapping jurisdictions seem to be the rule here for the Orthodox Churches.

As for the OCA, members of that church are comparing their new Metropolitan Jonah to Barack Obama. He even mentioned Obama in his speech before being elected Metropolitan. Why would anybody want to join a church whose head carries the mantle of Obama?

Traditionally, Orthodox Christians vote Democrat. I don't see any indication of that changing.

Yes, the rival religion is called Christianity.

It's my understanding that none of the Continuing groups are on board at this point. Sionnsar would likely be able to give a more definitive answer.

I expect most of the Global South to recognize the Anglicans rather than the Episcopalians.

Not very likely. As my (Continuing Anglican) bishop put it, returning to the worldwide Anglican Communion just puts you back in communion with those same heretical folks (or something like that). What's the purpose?

Instead, we're seeing a slow reunification of the CA churches.

Yes, the constitution for the new North American Province was released this evening.

Someone need to tell Fox and AP they are not starting a rival religion, but rescuing the old one from TEC and the ACC.
