VATICAN CITY (AP) — Pope Benedict XVI is encouraging Catholics who get involved in politics to stay true to their church's teaching.
Benedict says it is necessary that a new generation of Catholics in politics be "coherent" with the faith they profess.
He also recommends that they act with moral rigor and work passionately for the common good.
The pope urged Vatican officials in a speech Saturday to be vigilant about the evangelical education of Catholics who get so involved in society.
Benedict recently said religion and politics should be "open to each other."
The Vatican is particularly attentive to political action about abortion, euthanasia and embryonic stem cell research.

If it's true that he can, I agree. And a variety of others around the world, just to be fair. Pour encourager les autres.
***You support birth control, then?***
No. It is against Church teaching.

It’s true. He can. He has full jurisdiction over the Latin Church. The only thing that is preventing the reunion is the role of the Pope vis a vis the Orthodox jurisdictions, along with a handful of doctrinal points.
How many Orthodox bishops are in what we'd consider heresy? (My answer to both questions is, "I don't know.") Or, to be less formal, how many of either are conveying error to the faithful? (I still don't know.)
I know my Bishop isn't, and I know my two previous Bishops weren't. The one before that was a moonbat, but we only lived in the Nashville Diocese for a year.
Well, get at it then, Pope Benedict! Would it be racist to mention Viking Kitties here, or are Bavarians far enough South to make it just irrelevant :-)?
In imitation of Christ, I think maybe the Holy Father is waiting for them to recognize the sin and accuse themselves. Those whom Jesus forgave brought their sins to Him. He did not need to condemn them first.
That’s a great thought and I wish these people would recognize their error. The term reprobate comes to mind when thinking about these pro-abortion types. They are so self-justified in their sin that no voice of reason will ever persuade them.
Sexual what within its ranks? Sodomy, yes. Seduction of the innocent, yes. But I think there is more to it than that. Adultery, killing children in the womb, greed, immodest dress (if we believe St. Padre Pio and the Blessed Mother), disrespect for the church...I think there is a multitude of sins for which we are all guilty that offends God. According to all approved apparitions, the Heavenly Father is none too happy with us.
***How many of our bishops are in heresy?

We had some high hopes for the new bishop in the Davenport Diocese; he appears to have water flowing in his veins.

We need to work in our individual parishes as well. I might well upset the liberals tomorrow when I tear into them for what is coming out of the Obama camp over the last week.
The Church is universal. It is not a dictatorship. The pope constantly addresses these issues with Catholic 'politicians' around the globe. But the responsibility to act remains with the local ordinary, as Tax Chick already indicated. Which leads to the next question .....
Best wishes for your Sunday! I’m fortunate that my Spanish-speaking congregation is largely apolitical, mainly because most of them can’t vote. Discussions after Mass focus on survival issues - children, clothes, food, jobs - which is about the extent of my conversational vocabulary.
Except that abortion and embryonic stem cells are an issue of reason and natural law. The article’s title is misleading.
Religion is as a weapon in the hands of the user, for good or for evil.
I wish many of those Catholics in the north east and the west coast would follow their faith as if they did then those areas would be hard core red states
