106-year-old voter chooses Obama
BBC ^ | October 12, 2008 | David Willey

b>A 106-year-old American nun living in a convent in Rome could well be the oldest person to vote in the 2008 US Presidential election.

Sister Cecilia Gaudette, who last voted for President Eisenhower in 1952, has registered to vote and says she will vote for Democrat Barack Obama.

Although hard of hearing, she keeps herself informed by reading newspapers and watching TV at the convent.

"I'm encouraged by Senator Obama," she says.

"I've never met him, but he seems to be a good man with a good private life. That's the first thing. Then he must be able to govern," she adds.

Sitting in her modest office in the convent where she has lived for the past 50 years, the diminutive nun appears uninterested in the row inside the American Catholic church over Senator Obama's support for pro-choice policies on abortion.

Asked about her hopes for the US under an Obama presidency, she says: "Peace abroad. I don't worry about the Iraq war because I can't do anything about it. Lord knows how it will end."

"It is very complicated," she said. "Those Eastern people are not like we are."

But despite taking part in the 4 November election, Sister Cecilia does not intend to return to the US.

"I have no plans for the future. I am too old to go back to the US. Life has changed too much."

But she still watches "very important events" on TV. The election comes under this category.

Hahaha, right, McCain demanding that a 106 year old nun be prosecuted, that would be a GREAT PR MOVE.

...sarcasm tags not necessary.

Not the aborted ones.

"From Ike to Hussein. Quite a fall."

And voting for a proponent of infanticide. I'd call that a fall from Grace.

As unbelievable as it may seem, most nuns supported Kerry in the last election. They do not like Bush- at all. Nuns are big on social programs, dislike Bush for the war and seem to ignore the big one- abortion.

Sadly, I think you're probably right

I'm big on social programs, too! I just don't expect other to pay for them. Conservatives give more time and money to actually doing social good instead of asking for government paid programs at others' expense to relieve liberal guilt.

Bless her heart, but she obviously hasn’t read his books, nor be able to get anything other than “eurotrash for obama” news.

Now, can we go out and find a really seasoned citizen who is voting for mccain?

I know what the joke would be: There isn’t anyone older than McCain that’s voting for McCain. haha

Believe me, nuns are Democrats. I’m not sure how they justify the Dems abortion stance, I assume they just ignore it but, again, nuns are Democrats. Ask one.

Really? You won't find this one voting for Obama.

Or these good sisters ....

Please don't make blanket statements. They can be very misleading. Yes, there are some religious orders that slipped into the liberal mindset over the years. These groups have shriveled up with few or no new postulants. Meanwhile, there has been major growth in new religious communities, especially amongst the cloistered, like the Sisters pictured above. They value life and will support it in the voting booth.

Not all nuns support the Dem. ticket! That doesn’t say that they aren’t Dem. too. I remember reading after the 2004 election, that there were a large number of Catholics supported Bush/Cheney. Many of them were cross-overs! A number of them were R.Catholic nuns too! Mother Angelica from EWTN and her sisters were quoted to have voted for Bush/Cheney!

I’m pretty sure of that, because I remember seeing them on a newscast, and they were wheeling her in a wheelchair to the polling station. I thought, “Whew, thank goodness!”! In that newscast, they said quite a number of Catholics, even Democrat Catholics, were voting for Bush/Cheney instead of Kerry. And that was in spite of him being R.Catholic!(because of the abortion issue)

Neither will these: Dominican Sisters of Mary, Mother of the Eucharist. According to my wife, several were at the McCain/Palin rally in Sterling Heights, Michigan (on the Friday after the convention).

I suspect our Sister in Rome has a relative on the Obama campaign. Her great nieces are Stephanie and Stacy Andersen. Could Stephanie be Stephanie Andersen-Formolo, married to Thomas Formolo, bigtime Obama donor?

Perhaps not.

She is not in the Vatican, and she has young family here in the US in contact with her.
