For this Protestant, it just seems likely that if the Assumption HAD occurred, someone would have noticed. Her assumption would have occurred well before much of the NT was written, and it seems like it would be a significant event...
Plenty of people did notice. You should do some research into the writings of the Church Fathers and get enlightened.

They did notice. Apocryphal accounts
To much "assuming" on an "assumption" going on. Also, too many "assertions" of things without any proof behind them. I'm from Missouri, the "show me" state - so, "show me" that assertions are proof of anything. This should be a question any Protestant should ask when assumptions or assertions are made to prove beliefs.
Maybe only St. John saw it and then told others about it. Early writings say John went to live at Ephesus and Mary accompanied him. No city ever claimed the relics of her remains. Maybe it was such a well known story that no one saw the need to write it down.
She was pretty humble. Maybe she asked that it happen quietly.
Maybe the Holy Spirit wanted it left ambiguous. It’s a leap of faith, like the Eucharist.
Correct me if I’m wrong, but I believe no one knows where the original Ark of the Covenant is either. Coincidence?
