In the background the 'steamer' Varagan is preparing to leave the Stronsay pier at 8.10am. This morning the seminarian Sons of the Most Holy Redeemer, in calm seas and good standing, left Papa Stronsay to catch it. They are on their way to London to prepare their travel documents for the seminary.
We are very happy to announce that at the end of August they will be received by the Society of Saint Peter's seminary [FSSP], in Denton, Nebraska.
Prayer for their safe journey
Dominus custodit.... The Lord is your keeper;
The Lord is your protection upon your right hand.
The sun shall not burn you by day,
Nor the moon by night.
The Lord will keep you from all evil;
May the Lord keep your souls.
May the Lord keep your coming in and your going out:
From henceforth now and for ever.
(Psalm 120, Monday at Vespers)
Our Lady, Seat of Wisdom, pray for them!
St. Peter, pray for them!
St. Alphonsus Liguori, pray for them!
Catholic ping!
You'd think they'd kind of stand out amongst the locals -- Guy Fawkes Night is really really big in Orkney!
They used to be affiliated with the SSPX. Recently, most of them decided to regularize their status with the Vatican.
I had heard about them having to change their name when they decided to return to the fold, but I mean I had never ever heard of them at all before! And I thought I was pretty well up on the goings-on in Orkney. We are very fond of the local single-malt whisky, Highland Park.
The other local single malt, Scapa, was unavailable for years but they’ve started the distillery up again.
I must not have remembered that you’re a single-malt fan! I became a fan myself several years ago after moving to the DC area. I’d say my two favorites are Laphroaig (I recently tried their “Quarter Cask” version and it’s excellent) and Glenmorangie’s Cellar 13, which isn’t available in the States, so I have to ask people I know to get me it when they go over to the UK!
We recently lost our UK connection, but we'll try to get the Cellar 13 next time somebody crosses the pond . . ..
I had the Cellar 13 for the first time in a duty free in Heathrow right before my flight back to the States after visiting England in 2004. Someone approached me and asked me if I wanted a sample. Of course, I couldn't turn that down, and it was "love at first taste." Supposedly, it has more of a "sea character" to it than other Glenmorangie offerings, since it was aged in their warehouse that's the closest to the sea.
My husband tells me you can’t get the 30 year old here . . . but it’s around 400 smackers. As he says, “That’s a third of a new guitar!!!!!” and you can’t drink up the guitar.
Wow. The FSSP will train the FSSR?! Great news.
By the way, I encourage everyone to sign up for the Transalpine Redemptorists’ newspaper/magazine to financially help them out. Their SSPX friends have abandoned them since they’ve returned to full communion with the church. Some friends!
Alright! May they bear much fruit in the diocese. God bless them all!
