The Archbishop of York, Dr John Sentamu, has challenged an American woman bishop to produce evidence to back up her claim that bishops beat their wives.
Other bishops also criticised the US Episcopal Church's Bishop Catherine Roskam after she said at the Lambeth Conference in Canterbury that men beat women "because they can".
She said: "We have 700 men here. Do you think any of them beat their wives? Chances are they do. The most devout Christians beat their wives... many of our bishops come from places where it is culturally accepted to beat your wife."
About 670 bishops, nearly all men, are at the Lambeth Confernce in Canterbury, Kent. A further 230, mainly from Africa, have boycotted it because of the liberal direction of the Western church on homosexuality and other issues.
Bishop Roskam's comments are published in the latest edition of The Lambeth Witness, a daily newsletter produced by the Inclusive Church Network, a liberal lobby group working for the full inclusion of gays in Church life.
Bishop Roskam, a suffragan in New York, was speaking as bishops and their wives spent the day discussing violence against women. She said: "Economic downturn increases violence toward women, but you also find violence against women in the richest of households. You can't say it's only the poor who do it."
Her remarks provoked dismay and astonishment among bishops at the conference.
The Archbishop of York said: "I have never beaten my wife, although I can't talk about other people." He warned against a danger of "stereotyping" people because of the culture they come from. He said that Bishop Roskam should not throw out "aunt Sallies" which become divisive.

Another arrogant American Episcopal priestess like Presiding Bishop Schori, who went over to the UK and lectured them about taking too long to allow female ordination of bishops and claimed that those opposing female ordination “don’t like women”. Ugly Americans indeed.
Oh come on, men in the church are just as stupid. All those child molesting female priests proves your point, right?
Being female has nothing to do with being dumb. People are dumb, of both sexes.
Deflower those two? Ok, now my day has been officially kick started. Feelin pretty sleepy til then. That’s the funniest thing I’ve heard in a while.
Well, in Latin (the source of prelatese?) you can say shut up this way: Claude suam oram!
The better way to say it is “Tace!” That means “Be silence” in the most direct and brutal way.
In the Sistine Chapel, the museum guards yell “Silencio” at the crowds.
I have no idea how to say “Put up or shut up” however.
Good observation. I'll bet nobody has EVER seen this Roskam broad and Roger Ebert in the same place.
Thanks!
Just looked up the statistics from Gay/Lesbian websites that deal with the issue.
Estimates are 25% of gay men and 30% of lesbians report domestic violence in their relationships.
The studies believe these numbers are too because some incidents not reported and some are not charged as domestic violence but as other crimes such as assualt/battery.
By God, it’s uncanny!
Of couples that commit violence against each other, I have know more women who hit men that vice-versa. It goes both ways and it’s wrong in either instance.
As far as male priests molesting children, That comes from the errancy of Catholics denying marriage to their officials. 1Tim 4:1-4 says the bishops(1 Tim 3:2) should have 1 wife so it is a doctrine of demons to deny marriage. The pagan religions of the day were the ones that required eunuchs. The Scriptures specifically says that it might be advantageous to remain unmarried to be an evangelist, but if you are tempted to sin in your flesh, GET MARRIED. Homosexuality and fornication are completely covered in Scripture so there should be no doubt on God's feelings there. The institution of marriage was created by God to recreate His feeling for us. This is how we are able to understand the hurt that God feels when we commit adultery with other gods. We can relate to Him when we experience the pain of infidelity or the bliss of monogamy.
There are reasons God instructed us to construct our churches in the fashion He recommends. Women pastors= destruction sooner or later. Notice I didn't say women can't teach. There are many good women teachers. They are just not to have a place of authority over the church.
I am sorry, but I strongly, and I do mean strongly, disagree with you.
Pederasty is not from not being able to marry. That is probably the most ridiculous thing I have read and it negates your entire point of women not being leaders in church.
I wasn't stating my opinion for most of the post, I was quoting Scriptures. If you feel the need to go to church with a female priest, go for it. This is America. I'm just saying it's not God's church. God describes His church structure in Timothy through Paul, fairly plainly. The traditions of men were looked down upon by Jesus and He spoke out against their practice in His Church. You can think that something has been wrong for thousands of years and we have figured out finally that women belong in the pulpit, but that is not in the Scripture. If the Scripture isn't your touchstone for what God wants, then what measure do you use, "feelings"?
her remarks were clearly a put down of African bishops, most of whom are boycotting he conference.
liberal bishops in he US have been doing such since 1998.

Someone need to remind all of them: "As in all the congregations of the saints, women should remain silent in the churches. They are not allowed to speak, but must be in submission, as the Law says. If they want to inquire about something, they should ask their own husbands at home; for it is disgraceful for a woman to speak in the church. Did the word of God originate with you? Or are you the only people it has reached?" (1 Cor. 14:33b-36 NIV).

Bishopette Cather looks likes she’s been beaten ................
with the ugly stick.
(sorry couldn’t resist)
The three companies that insure the majority of Protestant churches in America say they typically receive upward of 260 reports each year of young people under 18 being sexually abused by clergy, church staff, volunteers or congregation members.

So much for your first argument.
1Tim 4:1-4 says the bishops(1 Tim 3:2) should have 1 wife so it is a doctrine of demons to deny marriage.
This verse refers to bishops that were widowers. Paul is instructing that these widowers could not remarry. The verse also refers to those bishops who were currently married. They also could not remarry (in the Catholic Church's Eastern rite, priests are allowed to marry; celibacy is only a disciplinary rule for the clergy of the Roman rite). Therefore, this text has nothing to do with imposing a marriage requirement on becoming a bishop.
The Scriptures specifically says that it might be advantageous to remain unmarried to be an evangelist, but if you are tempted to sin in your flesh, GET MARRIED.
According to Matt. 19:11-12, Jesus says celibacy is a gift from God and whoever can bear it should bear it. Jesus praises and recommends celibacy for full-time ministers in the Church. Because celibacy is a gift from God, those who criticize the Church's practice of celibacy are criticizing God and this wonderful gift He bestows on His chosen ones. Jesus Christ was celibate!
I wasn’t talking about being dumb.. what she said wasn’t dumb, it was feminazi..definitely not equipped to lead a congregation...
and women molest children too.. HOWEVER.. the only point that really matters IS.. the Bible says women shall not hold positions of authority in the church...period.. end of story.. only rules that matter.
Pope Chuckles has spoken.
