More proof that the bible is an accurate, historic documentation.

When Mark Twain visited the Holy Land in the 19th century he found it a desolate and almost deserted landscape once you got out of Jerusalem, itself a very minor city.

Meanwhile, Chaim Potok has a very detailed and moving history of the wanderings of the Jews through historical space and time called “Wanderings”

While many Jews were dispersed throughout the mid-east and Europe over thousands of years, I’m sure that some survived from year to year in Israel and some probably even became Muslim under pressure from the Arab conquerors in the 7th century, just as they became ‘Christians’ in Spain.

Yes indeed, every time man tries to close a window, G_D opens a door. The Truth will come out even to those who will not see!

How can the author refer to Joseph’s Tomb in the West Bank and a couple paragraphs later suggest that it is in Egypt?

To bolster the case for the historicity of the exodus, Mahoney cites recent archaeological work in the region that was once called "the land of Goshen," described in the Bible as the home of the Israelite people during their four hundred year sojourn in Egypt. These archaeological explorations have uncovered the presence of a substantial Semitic population there—which suddenly disappeared in the 13Th Dynasty of Egypt. This just happens to be the same era in which, many historians have surmised from surviving Egyptian historical records as well as references in the Biblical account, the Exodus must have taken place.

The story is contradictory in other ways.

You can’t both argue that the Israelites did their exodus from Egypt AND Saudi Arabia and that both countries are trying to cover up evidence of it.

This is the familiar Egyptian we all know as the "happy host" in Egypt...

Who would have guess this Muslim would be in denial of the ancient Jews presence in Middle East?????

Zahi Hawass is a pretty mixed-bag. He's charming and energetic, and has done a lot to revitalize world-wide interest in the study of Egyptian antiquities. On the other hand, he can be capriciously and ideologically repressive when dealing with anything that threatens to challenge the accepted theories of orthodox Egyptology.

His shameful treatment of Rudolf Gantenbrink and his "Upuaut" robot team in the exploration of the mysterious "air shafts" of the Queen's Chamber of the Great Pyramid was the turning point for me where I transitioned from enthusiastic support of Hawass to watchful skepticism.

With regard to this particular issue, I don't know if his obstructionism is derived from his personal "Muslim" beliefs, but I suspect not. He has always struck me as being a pretty secular academician with a real passion for his field of study. He's also a smart political animal, however, who has to avoid the pitfalls of serving in a rabidly repressive Muslim Egyptian government. His obstructionism in this case may be due as much to the necessities for his own political survival as to any personal religious beliefs.

"....Arab governments and political circles wish to deny to the Jews the status of indigenous inhabitants of the Middle East....."

With all due respect, only a fraction of the Israeli Jews have genetic origins in the Middle East. For the most part they are Eastern European.

"His obstructionism in this case may be due as much to the necessities for his own political survival as to any personal religious beliefs.

It matters NOT if he is a "believer" or simply a useful tool of the Islamist - the effect is the same.

Much of the world's knowledge and accomplishments which the Arab Muslim world claim as THEIR contribution to civilization was the contribution of conquered and enslaved and non Arabs.

Zahi Hawass is of the same school...
He wears his Raiders of the Lost Ark hat - brings in infidels to provide the intellectual work, high tech equipment, analysis and put thing in context for Hawass...

He strikes me as the Al Gore of Egypt -- In Texas they would say - all hat and no cattle.
