You are absolutely right.
I greatly respect the Orthodox women who cover their hair. They are following a longstanding habit in which some of the most righteous women in their history never exposed their hair outside the bedroom.
However, I don’t know this case (and innocent until proven guilty and all), but might it not be seen as odd perhaps to the Almighty that some habitual commandments are followed with such zeal while not cheating taxpayers is not as worthy??
By taking off her wig, she becomes less identifiable, Einstein.
Discuss the issues all you want, but do not make it personal.
I worked with an Orthodox Jewish woman. Each time she had a new baby, she’d get a new wig from her husband. She was up to nine the last time I counted.
I'm not familiar with the rules for the religion forum, but your decision to address the issue of me referring to someone as "Einstein" while overlooking the trashing of entire sect of Judaism is a little disconcerting. Suffice it to say, the actions of a few should not condemn an entire community.
one of the problems inherent to the new rules in the relig forum - as seen on the relig mods page
I doubt it since a non family member would not have seen her without it.
From the little bit of reading I did on Wikipedia, the practice seems it is rooted in a Jewish tradition of modesty. I don't see how a wig works to that end. It's like if men are required to cover their torsos, and then I wear a t-shirt with a realistic picture of a bodybuilder's chest on it to cover myself up.
No disrespect intended, I am honestly curious. Is the important thing only that the "real" hair be covered, a sort of "letter of the law" vs. "spirit of the law" thing?
Or am I just completely misunderstanding this aspect of Judaism?
The hair has to be kept covered. The purpose is not to make the woman “look unattractive.”
The reason wigs came about, in about the last 150 years, is so that a woman should not look slovenly (wearing a plain headscarf in public) or stand out in a crowd (wearing a more formal headgear, where women normally go bareheaded, would call attention to herself).
The reason for not wearing a headscarf nowadays would be not to be mistaken for a Muslim, although it’s customary for Jewish women to tie their headscarf behind the head, and for Muslim women to fasten it under the chin.
Personally, I prefer to wear a hat, but I wear a wig at work, for the above mentioned reasons.
Thanks for posting on this. It’s great that whatever the subject, there’s a Freeper to shed a little light.

Because you just told them........THEY read everything.
Being inconspicuous is part of modesty. A wig of "dreads" or some other extreme hairstyle like purple frosted tips, would not be appropriate.
Okay, I think I understand now. Thanks for the explanation!
“Would they make a cancer patient on chemotherapy remove a wig for a mug shot?”
As part of standard booking procedure, anything not part of a person is removed and examined -— wigs (where weapons can be hidden), turbins, dentures, glass eyes, artificial limbs, whatever.
You would be amazed at what can be hidden where.
The police weigh personal rights vs. safety/security of prison all the time, and make “reasonable” accomodations.
