Bishop loses the moral plot

Not so long ago, bishops in the Church of England were criticised for not speaking out on issues. Today, the greater problem is shutting them up.

The Bishop of Rochester, the Rt Rev Michael Nazir-Ali, has repeatedly been warning us of the dangers to British society from Islam – warnings that have earned him the affectionate endorsement of the BNP.

The Bishop of Stafford tells us that our negligence over climate change is a crime on a par with those of Josef Fritzl Now the Bishop of Stafford, the Rt Rev Gordon Mursell, has chimed in to tell us that our negligence over climate change is a crime on a par with those of Josef Fritzl, who locked his daughter in an Austrian cellar for 24 years and incestuously fathered her children.

In the June edition of a pastoral letter, which defies parody and will be distributed throughout the Diocese of Lichfield, Bishop Mursell writes that we "could argue that, by our refusal to face the truth about climate change, we are as guilty as [Fritzl] is – we are in effect locking our children and grandchildren into a world with no future and throwing away the key."

The bishop's casual, other-worldly conflation of the most ghastly incidence of child abuse with the complex challenges of global warming marks a new low in episcopal moral leadership.

Can he really be saying that our ineffectiveness in recycling rubbish and our continued insistence on burning fossil fuels while on the school run makes us as guilty of their abuse as a man who imprisons, rapes and tortures his daughter for over nearly a quarter of a century? Yes, apparently he can.

Oh well I wasn't thinking about him.... Bishop Nazir-Ali was the Evangelical’s choice for the Archbish of Canterbury but never really stood a chance and Bishop Glandaf got it by the dint of Tony the Great.

Maybe that's for the best - he is now more independent and seems to be making best us of it.

Go there Bishop Nazir-Ali!!!

No wonder the C of E is emptying at a supersonic speed.

Too bad the writer lumps Bishop Nazir-Ali with these loons. He was spot on.
