Hello fellow Freepers. I believe this is my first post on the Religion forum.
Over the past week or so, I put some thought into something I've been pondering for a while; my spiritual welfare. As it was, I had been part of the 'Sola Scriptua' school of thought (Evangelical Christian). By the Bible and only the Bible. Sounded good enough.
Well...what about before the Bible was put into word? It stuck in my head when reading an article earlier on FR concerning a deconstruction of Sola Scriptura and its inherent weaknesses as a foundation for one's faith.
This, combined with a genuine lack of churchgoing (as a family, we've been uncertain about going to various churches, given that top-down problems with Episcopal/Methodist/etc. churches and their increasing liberalization are a genuine problem for one's spiritual welfare), compelled me to make a decision.
I don't know if my family will follow me, persay, but I'm going to go ahead and take the plunge.
Next month, I'm going to the Church of St. Thomas the Apostle near my home, and I'm joining the Roman Catholic Church.
As is, I have a few volumes of the Magnificat pamphlet and the Catechism of the Catholic Church to read.
Any other pointers from other Catholic Freepers?
Yep, you called it, nanetteclaret. Eck, why do Calvinists invest magic power in their bibles? That's paganism. Remember, I'm not misrepresenting your beliefs, I'm just disagreeing with you.
- This looks bad, Bones. He's already worshipping an Apostle. What do you think we should do?
- How should I know, Jim? I'm a doctor, not a theologian!
- Fascinating, Captain! Evidently these primitive peoples honor those whom they think cooperated with their deity.
- She kanna do it Cap'n! I'm giving 'er all she can take! And besides, being a Scot, I'm Presbyterian! Kirk (aside) - Somebody send me a Quaker. They may not do much, but at least they're quiet. Heck, I'd settle for a Buddhist! Uhuru, pour me a drink. WWAT? You're BAPTIST and you can't do it? War speed, Mr. Sulu (get your hands off that young ensign) get us out of here.
**Of course, if you have questions, don’t hesitate to either post a thread of FReepmail one of the regular Catholic posters here. **
Ditto for me.
We are trying to help with positive CATHOLIC suggestions here.
**Is it not amazing the extent to which the Catholic Church has survived, and is indeed rebuilding itself, **
“And the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.”
Yes, and I’m Regular Baptist out of SW Virginia linked to Sepphardic Portuguese Jews fleeing the Inquisition, and being Finns we are either of the tribe of Napthali or Dan.
I will be quite surprised if Dr. E answers that...
"Do whatever HE tells you." Referring to Christ.

It’s technically called bibliolatry and from my perspective they are guilty of worshiping the book called the Bible (without the capability to understand it) and it distracts them from worshiping Jesus fully present in the Catholic Church. It also drives them to an almost insane hatred of all the things Jesus left His fledgling Church to promote unity.
I’m...not really quite sure how to respond. Then again, I’m apparently a rookie when it comes to experiencing the vitriol of a Religion forum thread.
In any case...there were a couple of Churches we tried. One was a Presbyterian church, another was non-demoninational. We went once to a Pentecostal church...but nothing concrete. Not since before we moved, where our previous church for many years was Cornerstone Christian out of Montgomery.
I’ve been languishing since the start of college in terms of going to Church...and I decided I needed to change that.
I decided that the first Church ever founded was the way to go.
All in all..I certainly didn’t expect a fight on this thread. oo;
I won’t name names...but a few of you need to knock it off, and move it elsewhere if you don’t mind.
God bless.
I plead guilty to excessivly loving the Holy Word of Elohim :
shalom b'SHEM Yah'shua
Yah'shua, the word of G-d; John 1:1.
“Because the Catholic Church doesnt believe in the Bible?”
Amazing that there are some people who actually believe this, even given the fact that the only reason we HAVE a Bible is because of the Catholic Church and tradition.
They don't, but try telling that to a willful child who insists "you can't do math with letters" no matter how you demonstrate the conceptual progression.
If only that were true. Not all that Jesus taught is contained in Holy Scripture. Without the lens of the Church one is lost in heresy, as evidenced by the wilderness of biblical interpretaton protestants are mired in. They claim to have assurance but only have division, discord and hatred of anyone who does not agree with their sola scriptura heresy and usually their own unique interpretation of Holy Scripture.
Welcome home.
May the Lord bless you, and keep you;
The Lord make His face shine on you, and be gracious to you;
The Lord lift up His countenance upon you, and give you peace.
**You keep posting these calumnies that will be accounted for one day.**
So true.
I have always loved this quote from Mother Angelica:
“Never apologize for the Blessed Virgin Mary!” ~~Mother Angelica
You seem to get this wrong continually. The Catholic Church is the Church that Jesus founded. ("Catholic" means "universal" -- i.e., there aren't any others out there). Your statement seems to place the Church alongside all of the other communities out there, denominations. That's not the way Christ intended it to be (you'll recall St. Paul's usage of the expression: "one body")(you will also recall this famous line, I'm sure: What I mean is that each one of you says, "I belong to Paul," or "I belong to Apol'los," or "I belong to Cephas," or "I belong to Christ." To which, there is the answer, and you are Christ's; and Christ is God's.)
Do you offer your time or talent if you can’t offer your treasure? I do all the time.
The Word is not a created thing-- it was with God before the creation of the world, it is holy and therefore deserving of our worship, the same as Christ.
