I'm joining the Catholic Church next month. Advice/Books/Etc.?

Posted on 05/28/2008 6:05:04 PM PDT by Ultra Sonic 007

Hello fellow Freepers. I believe this is my first post on the Religion forum.

Over the past week or so, I put some thought into something I've been pondering for a while; my spiritual welfare. As it was, I had been part of the 'Sola Scriptua' school of thought (Evangelical Christian). By the Bible and only the Bible. Sounded good enough.

Well...what about before the Bible was put into word? It stuck in my head when reading an article earlier on FR concerning a deconstruction of Sola Scriptura and its inherent weaknesses as a foundation for one's faith.

This, combined with a genuine lack of churchgoing (as a family, we've been uncertain about going to various churches, given that top-down problems with Episcopal/Methodist/etc. churches and their increasing liberalization are a genuine problem for one's spiritual welfare), compelled me to make a decision.

I don't know if my family will follow me, persay, but I'm going to go ahead and take the plunge.

Next month, I'm going to the Church of St. Thomas the Apostle near my home, and I'm joining the Roman Catholic Church.

As is, I have a few volumes of the Magnificat pamphlet and the Catechism of the Catholic Church to read.

Any other pointers from other Catholic Freepers?

Here you claim that disagreement IS NOT hate.
http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/religion/2022737/posts?page=487#487

Is it your contention that Protestants can disagree without hate, but that Catholics lack this ability?

Oh.... one more thing, try to get EWTN (Eternal Word Television Network) on your cable or satelite provider. It’s an excellent source for the faith.

Haven’t picked up a snake since I met my first husband.

LOL!

And look at all the trouble he got you into.

Who loves ya baby?

GOD LOVES you! That's who. He loves you so much he sent his Son to die for you.

It sure looks to me like they think the Bible does possess intrinsic holiness, not unlike a relic.

That's just the way it looks through your Catholic lens. < /sarc>

If a shark bites in the ocean ...blame the Catholics..

Very similar to the Muslim cannard of blaming the Jews for everything.

A scriptural question, to which I don’t know the answer.

“He that believeth on me, as the Scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water.” — John 7:38

Which scripture said that?

When Catholics are regularly portrayed as pagans who worship wafers, it goes past “disagreement.”

In all seriousness, don't you believe Jesus has appeared in the wine and bread and don't you kneel before, during, or after participating in the LORD's Supper?

“Well...what about before the Bible was put into word?”

The Word Became Flesh (John 1:1)
1In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2He was with God in the beginning.

Protestants do, however, take the Bible at its word that Scripture is God's intended means of communicating to His family via the indwelling Holy Spirit who illuminates the words on the page so that the truth of Christ risen can penetrate our hearts and renew our minds.

I sure would like to see the scriptures that say THAT!

I’ve asked you in the past not to post to me.

I pray for your immortal soul daily, but do not address me.

Well, that makes you AFAIK the only person in the world who “knows” it. Perhaps you should enlighten the rest of us.

Once again, my point is that we all know it.

. What I object to is the idea that the Catholic church is the "one true" church

Well, that's a difference in essential doctrine. Ecclesiology and the relationship between Christ and His Church are of the esse, from our POV. In general the minute peopoe say thay'll try to agree on essentials, they start disagreeing on what's essential and what isn't.

and all other Christians are at best the dregs of the believers, if they end up in heaven at all.

IF we believed that that would be of the essence too, wouldn't it? It impinges on Charity, on the, so to speak "reach" of redemption, and the role of the Church as a minister of redemption.

Yes, we do. But claiming what we worship is just a wafer is of the same stripe as claiming you worship three gods.

"Wafer" is just not our conception of the element.

Once the doctrine has been explained to you, it is your choice to accept or reject it. It is NOT your choice to claim we "know" the doctrine is false.

the best evangelical approach to understanding Catholicism is Scott Hahn’s Home to Rome.

The best understanding of catholic culture (i.e. the little things that make folk catholicism, as opposed to the dogma or how Catholism is practiced in other countries) is the Dummies guide to Catholicism.

Catholics are both rigorous and loose: The rules are strict, but since God is mercy, the burden is light.

Jeremiah 17
13. O LORD, the hope of Israel, all that forsake thee shall be ashamed, and they that depart from me shall be written in the earth, because they have forsaken the LORD, the fountain of living waters.

this is as close as i can get.
