I'm joining the Catholic Church next month. Advice/Books/Etc.?
Posted on 05/28/2008 6:05:04 PM PDT by Ultra Sonic 007
Hello fellow Freepers. I believe this is my first post on the Religion forum.
Over the past week or so, I put some thought into something I've been pondering for a while; my spiritual welfare. As it was, I had been part of the 'Sola Scriptua' school of thought (Evangelical Christian). By the Bible and only the Bible. Sounded good enough.
Well...what about before the Bible was put into word? It stuck in my head when reading an article earlier on FR concerning a deconstruction of Sola Scriptura and its inherent weaknesses as a foundation for one's faith.
This, combined with a genuine lack of churchgoing (as a family, we've been uncertain about going to various churches, given that top-down problems with Episcopal/Methodist/etc. churches and their increasing liberalization are a genuine problem for one's spiritual welfare), compelled me to make a decision.
I don't know if my family will follow me, persay, but I'm going to go ahead and take the plunge.
Next month, I'm going to the Church of St. Thomas the Apostle near my home, and I'm joining the Roman Catholic Church.
As is, I have a few volumes of the Magnificat pamphlet and the Catechism of the Catholic Church to read.
Any other pointers from other Catholic Freepers?

However, if only POSITIVE comments are being solicited, then it should not be an open thread. I think the original poster said that he welcomed comments from everyone. Any poster who disagreed with his choice could have made his/her best case. I didn't see much of that taking place, but I guess there's still time.........

I wasn’t actually claiming that you were bashing. My point was that the thread is full of bashing. I was making a general statement.

At over 1,100 posts - it is too late for a change in thread “tag.”

I think going to the local parish church for a while would be an important fir step, but to ‘join’ I think you’d have to go through a months long education program so that at the end you really know what you’re getting into and know for sure it’s what you want (or not). My brother in law converted some years ago and I recall his going thru this process. He did become a Roman Catholic and is very happy with his decision.
Good luck to you. He will lead you.

What utter rot. Your first link: http://www.unrv.com/culture/pontifex-maximus-list.php says "The Roman Office of the Pontifex Maximus began in 712 BC" and it refers to the list of HIGH PRIESTS OF THE ROMAN (PRE-CHRISTIAN) RELIGION OF JUPITER ETC.
Then, your next link, which is from the same website lists the ROMAN emperors, who were CHIEF PRIESTS OF THE PRE-CHRISTIAN ROMAN RELIGION. That post was abolished when the religion of Rome became Christianity. however, Constantine didn't do that, all he did was stop the persecution of Christians.
Christianity only became the state religion of the Roman Empire under the edict of Emperor Theodosius I on Feb 27, 380, 43 years AFTER Constantine I died.
So, the bishop of Rome become the Head Priest of all of the Roman Empire would date only after Constantine died -- 43 years later.
Furthermore, the Pontifex Max of the Sanhedrin jewish committee was called the Head Priest (the literal translation of Pont Max) -- so are you comparing those two institutions (or 3) to be the same?? very strange....

Then, I suppose this proceeds according to the new forum rules for “open” threads?

shouting doesn’t make your statements any truer. Remember that Goebbels shouted a lot of falsehoods about God’s people hopign to make people think they were true.

[subtilizes??? -- what an unusual choice of words!!! Where have we heard that word before??? Oh yeh, Genesis 3:1: "Now the serpent was more subtle than any beast of the field" -- subtle, Hmmmm!!! The serpent was subtilizing with poor gullible Eve.
Ah, the Catechism uses a word that resembles another word that was used in the English translation of the Bible. Hence they MUST be linked. 3 + 3 is 97.22. Sheesh.......

Absolutely, no further reference. In my defense, I was replying to 1106, which as of 45 seconds ago was not deleted.
I’m sorry.

Good job, Doc Eck, Xenia -- you bring more true believers to Christ's Church. Good show!! lol. Read your Bible, cronos.
