Why so many LDS threads?
08-May-2008 | Grig

Posted on 05/08/2008 5:04:47 PM PDT by Grig

I am posting this on behalf of many LDS freepers. They will post their own 'signature' to this in the comments below. --- Some of you have noticed lately a lot of LDS (ie: Mormon) threads here on FR. I'm going to tell you why.

For many years there have been several active LDS freepers here. We post to all the forums on relevant issues, and were happy to have a site where conservative values were so openly welcomed.

Those conservative values include faith in God, and freedom of religion. We fully respect the rights of all posters to express their opinions and views on religious matters, even when people choose to use those rights to express criticism of our own faith. We also support the ideas embodied in FR rules against religion bashing. There is no need for hostility and there should be no room for bigotry on FR. Every religion has it's miracles and mysteries. Every faith has things in it that are not or can not be proven, and things that run contrary to what secular science would have us believe. Someone mature and confident in their own faith generally doesn't feel the need to belittle the faith of others.

We have, to the best of our ability, conducted ourselves with civility and dignity. We do not feel that that respect has been returned by some posters (putting it mildly).

When Mormon missionaries were murdered, the moderators were kept busy pulling jubilant posts off the thread. When Elizabeth Smart was abducted from her home, we contended for months with posters who appeared to be motivated by religious bigotry doing all they could to smear the family and accuse the father. Several posters openly admitted their religious motivation in opposing Mitt Romney and confessed that no matter how conservative any Mormon was, they would never vote for one for President of the USA. When the Pope died, I don't think any Mormon poster posted anything unkind, yet the thread about the passing of our President recently needed many comments removed.

Nearly every thread having any connection with Mormons, or Utah winds up being hijacked by anti-Mormon activists who copy and paste the same false accusations over and over even when it has been clearly and factually pointed out to them on multiple occasions that they are bearing false witness against our faith. Everything possible is done by these activists to make FR a hostile place for Mormons, and for at least some of them, bashing Mormonism is all they do here. Their most recent project is trying to blur the fact that the polygamous FLDS is a separate and distinct religion from ours, just as Lutherans are a separate and distinct religion from Catholicism.

In our opinion, such poster do a great disservice to FR and to their fellow freepers by spreading disinformation and promoting hostility towards a people known for walking the walk of conservative values.

Why the moderators here don't see the behavior of these anti-Mormon activists as religion bashing is a mystery to us, but it is the moderators call to make and we respect their right to do so. That doesn't mean we have to be passive however. We have all spent many hours refuting the accusations leveled at our faith, but these wind up buried deep in a flood of comments, effectively shouting us down.

Recently some of us have decided to take a more proactive approach. Rather than try to wrestle the pig into taking a bath, we are just going to hose it down. We will actively define our faith here rather than just respond to accusations.

So expect to see lots of Mormon threads, now and for as long as we see fit to keep posting them (although probably not as many as there are Catholic threads). They will be about our basic doctrines and responses to common accusations. If you want to know what our faith is about, read the articles we post. We will post them as open threads and I encourage you to compare the difference in tone and spirit between what we post and what our critics say.

“I think that type of posting should go on its own board or in a different section than “News.”

Just my opinion.”

I agree. They don’t belong in the News forum. If there’s a problem in the Religion forum, then there should be an LDS forum. None of the latest threads are News.

It’s not rude to call a lie a lie.

The truth is what so many seem to find offensive.

Although there are threads that criticize the Methodist Church, you don’t hear us complain that we are being repressed. We can defend our faith and if we disagree with the church, we will voice that disagreement without reservation. I’ve seen Presbyerians voice disagreement with their church. And Catholics. And Baptists.

But I have never seen a Mormon voice a disagreement with their church.

What would I have to do or say to get you to rethink this? Why would you want to clutter this News Forum with unnecessary posts that will only provoke further acrimonious remonstration? The facts of your faith have always been beyond the grasp of many. Nothing you say will change the minds of most. You seem to feel that you are misunderstood. I am sure that your proselytizing is usually understood, yet summarily rejected.

The Angel Moroni may have shown golden plates to your revered Prophet Joseph Smith, that chronicled the visitation of Jesus to an ancient indigenous tribe in America that was the lost tribe of Israel. With no intent to bash, I can safely say that most people outside your faith feel that is a very broad notion for a person to wrap his mind around.

In spite of that, I do admire the religion that your belief has grown into, for its staunch conservative values, for its penchant for caring for all individuals within the community and even outsiders in need, and its ability, up until now, to stay above the petty attacks from some quarters. I urge you to continue to travel the upper highway instead of meandering down the alleyway with the Philistines.

On the side of beauty and taste, vulgarity; on the side of morals and feeling, coarseness; on the side of mind and spirit, unintelligence, -- this is Philistinism. --M. Arnold.

“Someone mature and confident in their own faith generally
doesn’t feel the need to belittle the faith of others.”

Like that Apostle Paul, who was obviously immature and insecure in his faith!

“But even if we, or an angel from heaven, should preach to
you a gospel contrary to what we have preached to you, he
is to be accursed!

“As we have said before, so I say again now, if any man is
preaching to you a gospel contrary to what you received, he
is to be accursed!

Borrowed from Tax-Chick and in full agreement.

I’m sorry LDS people. We Catholics get it too.
But let me tell you, some of the nicest FReepers are Non-Mormon and Non-Catholic.

Usual Suspects and Bad Apples are downright UnChristian.

Now, can there be TWO true prophets of God at the same time teaching conflicting doctrines? E. G. White vs J. Smith! Ringside seats everyone!

Not too good on historical dates and too lazy to Google but wasn't Mary Baker Eddy a contemporary of J.Smith?

"In my opinion, you are a blatent liar and I’m calling you out."

This from someone who recently claimed they never had a comment pulled.

"Here is a link to the thread about the Mormon missionaries. You can read for yourself why it was locked. http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-religion/1550903/posts Go to the last page of this thread. It was MORMON trolls who got the thread locked."

What I said is that the moderators were busy pulling comments from people who where happy to see that a couple Mormon missionaries were killed. If you happen to have a verifiable source giving the content of the many pulled comments (like post #20, 30, 37, 40, 50, 88, 95, 96, 100 and more), do feel free to post it, but I saw them before they were pulled and they were as I said.

Those of you who still doubt me should look at post 56 (among many others) it says:

this is a sick thread. Sounds like a couple people here are glad these young guys were shot. I pray that God will read their comments and place judgement on their unforgiving souls.

Notice also that the person who posted that is not an LDS poster.

Bring it on, Bro! The historical facts, as set forth in the sermons, writings, and early publications by the LDS founding fathers cannot be denied, no matter how hard you try, and ultimately your attempt to "hose" us critics down will go no where.

Good luck!

The poster you cite at #56 on he aforementioned thread made a total of 4 comments in his entire posting history at F.R. and they were all on that thread. He stated that he was not mormon but all 4 of his posts were in defense of mormonism, he hasn’t made another post since.

Ellen G. White didn’t find any gold tablets, but she did get hit in the head with a rock as a teenager and then turned into a prophet who had visions until menopause when they stopped.

I can out anecdote anyone about Ellen G. White.

That being said, Seventh-day Adventists are nice people.

I think the commonality that ties all Christians together is the Apostle’s Creed and Nicene Creed. If they are part of your Church your Church is Christian.

On behalf of all FReepers...I will hereby ask a few questions of the poster.

Okay....here's some simple quotes from one of the founders of mormonism, the much honored B.Young.

Are these bashing?

Are they falsehoods?

Is B. Young lying?

"For unbelievers we will quote from the Scriptures - "Whosoever believeth that Jesus is the Christ is born of God." Again - "Hereby know ye the Spirit of God: Every spirit that confesseth that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh, is of God." I will now give my scripture - "Whosoever confesseth that Joseph Smith was sent of God to reveal the holy Gospel to the children of men, and lay the foundation for gathering Israel, and building up the kingdom of God on the earth, that spirit is of God; and every spirit that does not confess that God has sent Joseph Smith, and revealed the everlasting Gospel to and through him, is of Antichrist....... - B.Young

Here's one for mormon's...

"Now if any of you will deny the plurality of wives, and continue to do so, I promise that you will be damned; and I will go still further and say, take this revelation, or any other revelation that the Lord has given, and deny it in your feelings, and I promise that you will be damned. - JoD 3:266 (July 14, 1855)

It is true that the earth was organized by three distinct characters, namely, Eloheim, Yahovah, and Michael, these three forming a quorum, as in all heavenly bodies, and in organizing element, perfectly represented in the Deity, as Father, Son, and Holy Ghost.

Again, they will try to tell how the divinity of Jesus is joined to his humanity, and exhaust all their mental faculties, and wind up with this profound language, as describing the soul of man, "it is an immaterial substance!" What a learned idea! Jesus, our elder brother, was begotten in the flesh by the same character that was in the garden of Eden, and who is our Father in Heaven. Now, let all who may hear these doctrines, pause before they make light of them, or treat them with indifference, for they will prove their salvation or damnation.

I have given you a few leading items upon this subject, but a great deal more remains to be told. Now, remember from this time forth, and for ever, that Jesus Christ was not begotten by the Holy Ghost. - JoD 1:50-51 (April 9, 1852)

The rank, rabid abolitionists, whom I call black-hearted Republicans, have set the whole national fabric on fire. Do you know this, Democrats? They have kindled the fire that is raging now from the north to the south, and from the south to the north. I am no abolitionist, neither am I a proslavery man; I hate some of their principles and especially some of their conduct, as I do the gates of hell. The Southerners make the negroes, and the Northerners worship them; this is all the difference between slaveholders. and abolitionists. I would like the President of the United States and all the world to hear this.

Shall I tell you the law of God in regard to the African race? If the white man who belongs to the chosen seed mixes his blood with the seed of Cain, the penalty, under the law of God, is death on the spot. This will always be so. - JoD: vol.10 p. 110: (March 8, 1863)

I dunno...but looks like ol' B. Young was pretty good at bashings. And you wonder why Christians question your religion?

Any FReeper that would like more quotes...they are freely available.

Personally I think the mormon church would like many quotes of J. Smith and B. Young....and countless other "prophets" to disappear...But they won't, despite the efforts of the mormon church.

"God is the same yesterday, today and forever.".....

And I pray for mormons everyday.
