Martin Luther: Hitler's Spiritual Ancestor
Catholic Apologetics ^ | Peter F. Wiener

Posted on 03/15/2008 10:17:55 AM PDT by big'ol_freeper

More than once during these talks I referred to Luther and what always occurred to me as his destructive influence. I pointed out that even in such an admirable book as Rohan Butler's “The Roots of National Socialism” the spiritual origins of Nazism and Luther's influence had not been given the necessary importance. Then I was asked if I would be prepared to elaborate to them—about a dozen of the very senior boys, that is—my own views on Luther and Lutheranism. I agreed—with the proviso that they would be my own views and nothing else. Admittedly, I had read more on Luther and about Luther than on most other subjects. But I wanted to make it quite clear that I would not speak to them with the voice of a great authority, but would merely give them my own interpretation. I told them, moreover, that I should try to prove how dangerous it is to accept legends; and that the picture I had of Luther and his influence was thoroughly contradictory of the customary Luther of the legend.

That's positively interplanetary.

(And with that, I've passed the acid test for being a Christian.)

He’s a much better historian than the liar Cornwell.

If that were all there were to the Gospel, your Bible would consist of a 3x5 index card. Terrible that you've reduced the whole Christian message to what amounts to a slogan. You've been cheated out of so much.

Okay, I tried.

ICor. 1:23 but we preach Christ crucified, to the Jews a stumbling block and to the Greeks foolishness.

Matthew 7:21 Not everyone who says to Me, 'Lord, Lord,' shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father in heaven.

What exactly is the will of the Father in heaven?

John 6:29 Jesus answered and said to them, "This is the work of God, that you believe in Him whom He sent."

It's never to late to believe The Gospel.

Lapide lived through the events and knew many of the participants.

Jeno Levai, who also lived through those events, was most certainly a reputable historian. He wrote a book called "Hungarian Jewry and the Papacy: Pius XII Did Not Remain Silent". In it, he wrote: "in the autumn and winter of 1944 there was practically no Catholic Church institution in Budapest where persecuted Jews did not find refuge". That's quoted in Rabbi Dalin's book.

Sir Martin Gilbert is also very much a reputable historian. He has also come to Pope Pius' defense.

Come to any obedient, faithful Catholic Church on Good Friday and you'll get more of Christ Crucified than you'll get in 10 years of Sundays at a Baptist church.

Then why when given the opportunity to present The Gospel are you so hesitant?

I'm certainly very familiar with those scriptures.

But you have to believe the rest of the Bible, too.

I see no reason why Pinchas Lapide cannot be called a historian. He wrote about more than just the resurrection too. He wrote a number of books on St. Paul, dialogs between Christians and Jews, Heine, Buber, etc.

Also, his book Three Popes and the Jews had nothing whatsoever to do with winning recognition from anyone for Israel. He himself said he wrote the book because he was shocked at the allegations against Pius XII that came from leftists just a few years after Pius’ death in direct contradition to what he knew had happened.

“Perhaps we are supposed to believe Yad Vashem does not employ “reputable historians.”

Is the Vatican or Pius II listed among the “Righteous Among the Nations” at Yad Vashem?

**Thanks to all for an interesting discussion!
Good night, and I hope you all have a blessed Lord’s day tommorrow!**

IN CHRIST ALONE

In Christ alone my hope is found
He is my light, my strength, my song
This Cornerstone, this solid ground
Firm through the fiercest drought and storm
What heights of love, what depths of peace
When fears are stilled, when strivings cease
My Comforter, my All in All
Here in the love of Christ I stand

In Christ alone, who took on flesh
Fullness of God in helpless babe
This gift of love and righteousness
Scorned by the ones He came to save
‘Till on that cross as Jesus died
The wrath of God was satisfied
For every sin on Him was laid
Here in the death of Christ I live

There in the ground His body lay
Light of the world by darkness slain
Then bursting forth in glorious Day
Up from the grave He rose again
And as He stands in victory
Sin’s curse has lost it’s grip on me
For I am His and He is mine
Brought with the precious blood of Christ

No guilt in life, no fear in death
This is the power of Christ in me
From life’s first cry to final breath
Jesus commands my destiny
No power of hell, no scheme of man
Can ever pluck me from His hand
‘Till He returns or calls me home
Here in the power of Christ I’ll stand

There are more reasons folks fail to recognize Love. But the major reasons is probably the refusal to walk intimately with Him who Is Love--fierce Love--Truth-In-Love . . . to be comforted by HIS LOVE AND to be disciplined by HIS LOVE.

Amen.

“I think it is just too much to claim Luther led directly to Hitler, but they were both anti-semitic, nationalists, etc.”

I’m curious to learn what nation Martin Luther was a “nationalist” of, considering Germany wasn’t unified until 1860.

Catholics are the ones who believe in TRUTH. That’s why we’re not making up stories about Martin Luther while Protestants are defending a phony accusation against Pius XII.
