Mormonism increasingly draws Spanish-speakers as converts
Arizona Daily Star ^ | March 8, 2008 | Stephanie Innes

Posted on 03/08/2008 5:14:33 PM PST by Zakeet

Spanish-speakers are fueling growth in the local Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, which recently opened new worship space on Tucson's predominantly Hispanic South Side.

Many local Mormon worshippers, like 47-year-old Juan Arroyo, converted to the faith from Catholicism while living in their native countries. Arroyo, a roofer who has four children, joined the church when he lived in Guadalajara, Mexico. He's been in the United States for seven years.

"I was missing something, and my life changed greatly after meeting the missionaries," he said in Spanish.

Nationally, the number of Spanish-speaking congregations in the Mormon church grew by 64 percent between 2000 and 2006. There are 639 such congregations in the United States.

The church is growing quickly in Mexico.

Church officials say its presence there began in 1875 when Brigham Young, then denomination president, called on six missionaries from Salt Lake City to bring Spanish-language materials about the church to Mexico. In 1885, a group of nearly 400 colonists from Utah arrived at northern Mexico's Casas Grandes River. Mexico's first stake was created in Colonia Juárez in 1895. By 1912, more than 4,000 members had settled in Chihuahua and Sonora.

More than 1 million members now live in Mexico, a predominantly Catholic country with a population of about 108 million.

Dr. King and his following seemed to think your way of thinking is wrong.

Well, I am glad to see the LDS finally lifted that ban in existence for over 100 years of not allowing black mormons to hold the priesthood instead of continuing to practice their racist policies of the past. Long overdue wasn't it???? Especially since you can't attain exaltation without holding the priesthood. Now that's racist and the LDS did it until the 1970's. But wait -- that's CHANGED doctrine isn't it???? Convenient too. Wasn't changed until the LDS started having troubles gaining african converts. And you lecture us.........

If we use your logic, the Bible teaches there will be no teachers.

No, the Bible teaches we have been left with the greatest teacher of all - the Holy Spirit.

John 14:26 - But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.

What LDS teaching does is substitute prophets for the Holy Spirit and say that God Himself is not sufficient.

What is the one nature of God that everyone agree on?

Not "everyone". Christians... of which you are not one.

The Mormons believe that there are three Gods in the "Godhead." The Mormons believe that Jesus was a literal Son of God and the first spirit child born out of a Marriage between the "Heavenly Father" and one of his Celestial wives.

The Mormons believe that the "Heavenly Father" received a body of flesh and bones after living on some earth somewhere in the Universe and "became" God by being "exalted" through obedience to the "Laws and Ordinance of the Gospel" and that someday every good Mormon male will be given that same opportunity to be a "Heavenly Father" over some planet somewhere in the endless universe, provided that they follow all the rules of laws and ordinances and principles of the Mormon Gospel.

Mormons do not believe that God created the heavens and the earth, but that the Heavens and the Earth pre-existed God and that God merely "organized" the existing material to make the earth.

Mormons are unique among all religions in regard to their belief in the nature of God. Christians believe in ONE GOD, who has existed as God from all eternity. Christians do not believe that God "became" God. Christians believe that the ONE GOD exists in three persons, the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. Christians do not believe that there are any other Gods in the whole of the Universe and that the one God created the whole of the universe by the power of his Word.

So quit whining when we say that Mormons are not Christians. They are not. When I was a Mormon, I never made the claim that I was a "Christian" just like the Protestants and the Catholics. The Mormon claim to be "Christian" is something that came along after I left the LDS Church. It was a PR move to try to win converts by pretending that the LDS Church is just a "better" church than the one that the potential convert is being led away from. But the LDS Church has always taught that it alone is the "Church of Christ" and that all other churches are the Church of the devil. Maybe they don't "emphasize" that belief anymore, just like they don't "emphasize" the doctrine of Eternal Progression. But they teach it. And it is essential to their entire belief system.

It might help if you would give a straight answer, and not call me names because you cannot explain it good enough.

I gave you a straight answer and I do not recall calling you a name, unless you are somehow insulted that I referred to you as "Fred".

You put up a pretty picture of a car, instead of thinking about the answer.

I did think about it.

Brigham Young was a false prophet. That is an empirically provable fact. Maybe YOU should think about THAT.

Is that photocopy of the “Journal of Discourses” from your set, or is it from someone else's sound-bite?

What difference does it make?

THE FIRST BOOK OF NEPHI
HIS REIGN AND MINISTRY
CHAPTER 14

An angel tells Nephi of the blessings and cursings to fall upon the Gentiles—There are only two churches: the Church of the Lamb of God and the church of the devil—The saints of God in all nations are persecuted by the great and abominable church—The apostle John shall write concerning the end of the world. Between 600 and 592 B.C.

1 And it shall come to pass, that if the Gentiles shall hearken unto the Lamb of God in that day that he shall manifest himself unto them in word, and also in power, in very deed, unto the taking away of their stumbling blocks—
2 And harden not their hearts against the Lamb of God, they shall be numbered among the seed of thy father; yea, they shall be numbered among the house of Israel; and they shall be a blessed people upon the promised land forever; they shall be no more brought down into captivity; and the house of Israel shall no more be confounded.
3 And that great pit, which hath been digged for them by that great and abominable church, which was founded by the devil and his children, that he might lead away the souls of men down to hell—yea, that great pit which hath been digged for the destruction of men shall be filled by those who digged it, unto their utter destruction, saith the Lamb of God; not the destruction of the soul, save it be the casting of it into that hell which hath no end.
4 For behold, this is according to the captivity of the devil, and also according to the justice of God, upon all those who will work wickedness and abomination before him.
5 And it came to pass that the angel spake unto me, Nephi, saying: Thou hast beheld that if the Gentiles repent it shall be well with them; and thou also knowest concerning the covenants of the Lord unto the house of Israel; and thou also hast heard that whoso repented not must perish.
6 Therefore, woe be unto the Gentiles if it so be that they harden their hearts against the Lamb of God.
7 For the time cometh, saith the Lamb of God, that I will work a great and a marvelous work among the children of men; a work which shall be everlasting, either on the one hand or on the other—either to the convincing of them unto peace and life eternal, or unto the deliverance of them to the hardness of their hearts and the blindness of their minds unto their being brought down into captivity, and also into destruction, both temporally and spiritually, according to the captivity of the devil, of which I have spoken.
8 And it came to pass that when the angel had spoken these words, he said unto me: Rememberest thou the covenants of the Father unto the house of Israel? I said unto him, Yea.
9 And it came to pass that he said unto me: Look, and behold that great and abominable church, which is the mother of abominations, whose founder is the devil.
10 And he said unto me: Behold there are save two churches only; the one is the church of the Lamb of God, and the other is the church of the devil; wherefore, whoso belongeth not to the church of the Lamb of God belongeth to that great church, which is the mother of abominations; and she is the whore of all the earth.
11 And it came to pass that I looked and beheld the whore of all the earth, and she sat upon many waters; and she had dominion over ball the earth, among all nations, kindreds, tongues, and people.
12 And it came to pass that I beheld the church of the Lamb of God, and its numbers were few, because of the wickedness and abominations of the whore who sat upon many waters; nevertheless, I beheld that the church of the Lamb, who were the saints of God, were also upon ball the face of the earth; and their dominions upon the face of the earth were small, because of the wickedness of the great whore whom I saw.
13 And it came to pass that I beheld that the great mother of abominations did gather together multitudes upon the face of all the earth, among all the nations of the Gentiles, to fight against the Lamb of God.
14 And it came to pass that I, Nephi, beheld the power of the Lamb of God, that it descended upon the saints of the church of the Lamb, and upon the covenant people of the Lord, who were scattered upon all the face of the earth; and they were armed with righteousness and with the power of God in great glory.
15 And it came to pass that I beheld that the wrath of God was poured out upon that great and abominable church, insomuch that there were wars and rumors of wars among all the nations and kindreds of the earth.
16 And as there began to be wars and rumors of wars among all the nations which belonged to the mother of abominations, the angel spake unto me, saying: Behold, the wrath of God is upon the mother of harlots; and behold, thou seest all these things—
17 And when the day cometh that the wrath of God is poured out upon the mother of harlots, which is the great and abominable church of all the earth, whose founder is the devil, then, at that day, the work of the Father shall commence, in preparing the way for the fulfilling of his covenants, which he hath made to his people who are of the house of Israel.
18 And it came to pass that the angel spake unto me, saying: Look!
19 And I looked and beheld a man, and he was dressed in a white robe.
20 And the angel said unto me: Behold one of the twelve apostles of the Lamb.
21 Behold, he shall see and write the remainder of these things; yea, and also many things which have been.
22 And he shall also write concerning the end of the world.
23 Wherefore, the things which he shall write are just and true; and behold they are written in the book which thou beheld proceeding out of the mouth of the Jew; and at the time they proceeded out of the mouth of the Jew, or, at the time the book proceeded out of the mouth of the Jew, the things which were written were plain and pure, and most precious and easy to the understanding of all men.
24 And behold, the things which this apostle of the Lamb shall write are many things which thou hast seen; and behold, the remainder shalt thou see.
25 But the things which thou shalt see hereafter thou shalt not write; for the Lord God hath ordained the apostle of the Lamb of God that he should write them.
26 And also others who have been, to them hath he shown all things, and they have written them; and they are sealed up to come forth in their purity, according to the truth which is in the Lamb, in the own due time of the Lord, unto the house of Israel.
27 And I, Nephi, heard and bear record, that the name of the apostle of the Lamb was john, according to the word of the angel.
28 And behold, I, Nephi, am forbidden that I should write the remainder of the things which I saw and heard; wherefore the things which I have written sufficeth me; and I have written but a small part of the things which I saw.
29 And I bear record that I saw the things which my father saw, and the angel of the Lord did make them known unto me.
30 And now I make an end of speaking concerning the things which I saw while I was carried away in the spirit; and if all the things which I saw are not written, the things which I have written are true. And thus it is. Amen.

Mormons would never dare post actual excerpts of the Journal of Discourses, it would be too damaging.

I think our FRiend fred is suggesting it came from an “anti” site, so, while totally factual and acurate, ....it must therefore be anti. LOL

You are showing how little you really know.

While YOU are showing nothing:

No bible verses to prove your claim;

no BoM words to back up your assertions.

Why are you an LDS member?

It's just another church telling you a different way to be saved.

How do you know THEY are right?

It is in what I said.

You seem to use this kind of post to confuse the discussion.

It is NOT in "what you said".

You just post stuff expecting no one to call you on it.

If we use your logic, the Bible teaches there will be no teachers.

Why would you use ANY 'logic' when the WORDS are available to read?

 1 Corinthians 12
 1.  Now about spiritual gifts, brothers, I do not want you to be ignorant.
 2.  You know that when you were pagans, somehow or other you were influenced and led astray to mute idols.
 3.  Therefore I tell you that no one who is speaking by the Spirit of God says, "Jesus be cursed," and no one can say, "Jesus is Lord," except by the Holy Spirit.
 4.  There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit.
 5.  There are different kinds of service, but the same Lord.
 6.  There are different kinds of working, but the same God works all of them in all men.
 7.  Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good.
 8.  To one there is given through the Spirit the message of wisdom, to another the message of knowledge by means of the same Spirit,
 9.  to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by that one Spirit,
 10.  to another miraculous powers, to another prophecy, to another distinguishing between spirits, to another speaking in different kinds of tongues,  and to still another the interpretation of tongues.
 11.  All these are the work of one and the same Spirit, and he gives them to each one, just as he determines.
 12.  The body is a unit, though it is made up of many parts; and though all its parts are many, they form one body. So it is with Christ.
 13.  For we were all baptized by  one Spirit into one body--whether Jews or Greeks, slave or free--and we were all given the one Spirit to drink.
 14.  Now the body is not made up of one part but of many.
 15.  If the foot should say, "Because I am not a hand, I do not belong to the body," it would not for that reason cease to be part of the body.
 16.  And if the ear should say, "Because I am not an eye, I do not belong to the body," it would not for that reason cease to be part of the body.
 17.  If the whole body were an eye, where would the sense of hearing be? If the whole body were an ear, where would the sense of smell be?
 18.  But in fact God has arranged the parts in the body, every one of them, just as he wanted them to be.
 19.  If they were all one part, where would the body be?
 20.  As it is, there are many parts, but one body.
 21.  The eye cannot say to the hand, "I don't need you!" And the head cannot say to the feet, "I don't need you!"
 22.  On the contrary, those parts of the body that seem to be weaker are indispensable,
 23.  and the parts that we think are less honorable we treat with special honor. And the parts that are unpresentable are treated with special modesty,
 24.  while our presentable parts need no special treatment. But God has combined the members of the body and has given greater honor to the parts that lacked it,
 25.  so that there should be no division in the body, but that its parts should have equal concern for each other.
 26.  If one part suffers, every part suffers with it; if one part is honored, every part rejoices with it.
 27.  Now you are the body of Christ, and each one of you is a part of it.
 28.  And in the church God has appointed first of all apostles, second prophets, third teachers, then workers of miracles, also those having gifts of healing, those able to help others, those with gifts of administration, and those speaking in different kinds of tongues.
 29.  Are all apostles? Are all prophets? Are all teachers? Do all work miracles?
 30.
Do all have gifts of healing? Do all speak in tongues ? Do all interpret?
 31.  But eagerly desire  the greater gifts.   And now I will show you the most excellent way.

The Bible DOES mention 'prophets' - plural - NOT just ONE Living Prophet®.
AND, it is a GIFT; NOT an 'office'.

Can you be SURE???

AoF #8

We believe the Bible to be the word of God as far as it is translated correctly; we also believe the Book of Mormon to be the word of God.

--MormonDude(Oh yeah: there's a BUNCH of stuff that we consider 'the word of God' that is NOT mentioned in our AoF!)

Discuss the issues all you want, but do NOT make it personal.

Please note that personal pronouns are not banned. However, several posters have found it helpful to avoid pronouns altogether to not "make it personal." Remember that when the word "you" is used it is often taken personally instead of universally. The opponent will rarely give you the benefit of the doubt.

Religion Forum posters have a bad habit of putting words in the other poster's mouth - both directly and indirectly. To avoid flame wars and/or having your threads locked, try quoting the other poster directly instead of paraphrasing him. Or frame it as question, e.g. "Are you saying blah, blah."

Did you notice his desire in having the site is to change the Church to something you would call Christian because he thinks like the Tanners that the Church needs changing.

Then you'd better talk to your fellow mormon on that one shouldn't you. But then an invocation of Tanner is akin to invoking nazism when you cannot sustain your arguement.

In Smitties case, I'll ask you again - based upon MORMON documents Smittie was personally involved in publishing regarding the first visitation was he: 14, 15 or 17 yrs old
Was it a)in the woods b) in his bedroom or c) who knows
Who visited him a)an angel b) Jesus only c) both Jesus and the father
++++++++++++++++++++
It is very clear you are spitting up someone elsies ideas. You show no personal study.

:) I kept it realllllly simple for you. These were summarized from the three mormon documents that were referenced. I even included the 'official' version. So what is so hard for you to answer a simple multiple choice question?

Then why did not Father tell us there will be NO Prophets.
If we use your logic, the Bible teaches there will be no teachers.

I'd like to see chapter and verse for your first statement, KJV is ok. Secondly provide KJV to support your claim that there would be a singular prophet to lead the church with an organization other than that listed in the NT :) Finally, my logic DID indicate there would be teachers as I clearly cited such from the Bible.
