In his pursuit of the presidency, Mitt Romney held fast to his Mormon faith, though his religion remains controversial with evangelicals and some other Christians. But his determined (and ultimately futile) wooing of evangelicals led him to make some statements that didn't quite square with Mormon beliefs and culture. And the effort itself may have deepened the impression of him as inauthenticeven to some fellow Mormons.
Early in his presidential bid, Romney was asked what he thought of polygamy. Prompted by what they considered a divine revelation, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints discontinued the practice more than a century ago, and the church distances itself from polygamist "fundamentalists." But Romney went one step further, saying he couldn't "imagine anything more awful than polygamy." Many Mormons were privately taken aback. Mormons believe that, in its time, "plural marriage" was a commandment from God, and they are, as a group, fiercely proud of their ancestors, hundreds of whom practiced polygamy. (Romney's own great-grandfather had five wives.) LDS church members loathe the polygamy stereotypes and jokes bandied by outsiders. But hearing Romneythe most recognizable face of their faith these daysdisavow it in those terms was mildly unsettling to LDS insiders.
Others were puzzled to hear Romney say he reads the Gideon Biblea version popular with evangelicals: Mormons uniformly study the King James version, in a Salt Lake edition that is cross-referenced to all other Mormon scripture. "Seems like he just figured he had to say the safest, most Protestant thing he could think ofthat was kind of annoying," says Russell Arben Fox, a Mormon professor of political science at Friends University in Wichita, Kans.

Joseph Smith was; and so are his followers!
Try really hard and maybe you can get THIS thread locked too!
This is where your misunderstanding of my religion hurts the discussion. I do not accept everything that comes out of a person who happens to be a Mormon, whether a leader or not. Nor should a baptist accept everything that comes out of a preacher or pastor’s mouth.
She's BACK!
MAybe she'll answer your questions now!
How convincing. Everything I believe in is false!! What am I to do?
No that you have out of the way, do you want to have a worthwhile discussion?
YOU would blame that on me?
ROFLOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
You went to clown college too, right?
So, by this type of thinking, it must be that much "easier" to outright dismiss Christ's teachings, and even more especially, those in the Old Testament. In fact, no doubt that comes in as a handy "defense" for ripping out the Song of Solomon, as that is even older than the New Testament writings.....
Awesome. You get to jump on the misunderstanding bandwagon.
THE BOOK OF JACOB
THE BROTHER OF NEPHICHAPTER 224 Behold, David and Solomon truly had many wives and concubines, which thing was abominable before me, saith the Lord.
25 Wherefore, thus saith the Lord, I have led this people forth out of the land of Jerusalem, by the power of mine arm, that I might raise up unto me a righteous branch from the fruit of the loins of Joseph.
26 Wherefore, I the Lord God will not suffer that this people shall do like unto them of old.
27 Wherefore, my brethren, hear me, and hearken to the word of the Lord: For there shall not any man among you have save it be one wife; and concubines he shall have none;
28 For I, the Lord God, delight in the chastity of women. And whoredoms are an abomination before me; thus saith the Lord of Hosts.
29 Wherefore, this people shall keep my commandments, saith the Lord of Hosts, or cursed be the land for their sakes.
30 For if I will, saith the Lord of Hosts, raise up seed unto me, I will command my people; otherwise they shall hearken unto these things.
31 For behold, I, the Lord, have seen the sorrow, and heard the mourning of the daughters of my people in the land of Jerusalem, yea, and in all the lands of my people, because of the wickedness and abominations of their husbands.
32 And I will not suffer, saith the Lord of Hosts, that the cries of the fair daughters of this people, which I have led out of the land of Jerusalem, shall come up unto me against the men of my people, saith the Lord of Hosts.
Or even HERE:
1 Timothy 3:2-3
2. Now the overseer must be above reproach, the husband of but one wife, temperate, self-controlled, respectable, hospitable, able to teach,
3. not given to drunkenness, not violent but gentle, not quarrelsome, not a lover of money.1 Timothy 3:12
A deacon must be the husband of but one wife and must manage his children and his household well.Titus 1:6
An elder must be blameless, the husband of but one wife, a man whose children believe and are not open to the charge of being wild and disobedient.
THE
DOCTRINE AND COVENANTS
OF THE CHURCH OF JESUS CHRIST OF LATTER-DAY SAINTSSECTION 1325157, Emma Smith is counseled (commanded) to be faithful and true; 5866, Laws governing the plurality of wives are set forth.51 Verily, I say unto you: A commandment I give unto mine handmaid, Emma Smith, your wife, whom I have given unto you, that she stay herself and partake not of that which I commanded you to offer unto her; for I did it, saith the Lord, to aprove you all, as I did Abraham, and that I might require an offering at your hand, by covenant and sacrifice.52 And let mine handmaid, Emma Smith, areceive all those that have been given unto my servant Joseph, and who are virtuous and pure before me; and those who are not pure, and have said they were pure, shall be destroyed, saith the Lord God.53 For I am the Lord thy God, and ye shall obey my voice; and I give unto my servant Joseph that he shall be made ruler over many things; for he hath been afaithful over a few things, and from henceforth I will strengthen him.55 But if she will not abide this commandment, then shall my servant Joseph do all things for her, even as he hath said; and I will bless him and multiply him and give unto him an ahundredfold in this world, of fathers and mothers, brothers and sisters, houses and lands, wives and children, and crowns of beternal lives in the eternal worlds.
If you are encouraging people to disregard old documents, simply because they are old, then any person can come along and refute anything they choose.
If that’s not your “intent,” then don’t suggest age of document makes the discussion concerning the very FOUNDATION and/or beginnings of a belief system “irrelevant.”
And the Mormon folk try their darnedest to spin the facts away.
I am somewhat bitter.
And delusioned that a segment of the FR conservative segment I once held in such esteem could be so vapid and motivated to personally destroy a decent Republican who was the best at espousing the very same conservative principals which some FR segments claim to believe.
I believe that... In wooing evangelicals, he made some fellow LDS members uneasy.
They are now saying that the words of their leaders seem to not be important if they are 150 years old. Jesus words are 2000 years old, they seem pretty valid even today.
So, by this type of thinking, it must be that much “easier” to outright dismiss Christ’s teachings, and even more especially, those in the Old Testament. In fact, no doubt that comes in as a handy “defense” for ripping out the Song of Solomon, as that is even older than the New Testament writings.....

Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm
I wonder if the Song of Solomon is taught in mormon Sunday School ??????
This is getting tiresome. I believe in my religion, both because of witnesses of the Spirit and because it makes sense to me. You believe in yours.
Neither of us is going to change that.
How about we just talk about how awful Hillary! and Obama are, and how dangerous the anti-religious Left is?
I did no such thing. My point was two-fold: 1) most of these quotes are not official teachings of the church, and thus, not accepted by, or a part of the beliefs of, most Mormons and 2) because they are not official teachings, rather personal opinions expressed so long ago in different times, they are often rejected by most Mormons. Age is only relevant when we are talking about whether Mormons agree with personal opinions expressed so long ago. Should I hold every baptist, catholic, or other Christian accountable for any racist, sexist, inconsistent, or anti-Christian like comment ever made by a leader of the respective religion? Of course not. To do so is unfair and unintelligent. The problem is that many posters here are trying to do that very thing to me. Do you understand my point of view?
Just list the "highly suspicious material" you are referencing with links to the post and poster, and there will be a quick response providing you with answers to your SPECIFIC complaint from possibly more than one FReeper...painting with a broad brush, as you have, does not validate your smear. No reasonable or honest person does that. It is pretty clear whats going on here. It is kind of sad
It's kind of sad that a n00b comes on a thread and immediately starts maligning FReepers without evidence. Quite revealing.
