How Mormons Saw Romney -- In wooing evangelicals, he made some fellow LDS members uneasy
Newsweek ^ | February 8, 2008 | Sally Atkinson

Posted on 02/19/2008 4:46:10 PM PST by Zakeet

In his pursuit of the presidency, Mitt Romney held fast to his Mormon faith, though his religion remains controversial with evangelicals and some other Christians. But his determined (and ultimately futile) wooing of evangelicals led him to make some statements that didn't quite square with Mormon beliefs and culture. And the effort itself may have deepened the impression of him as inauthentic—even to some fellow Mormons.

Early in his presidential bid, Romney was asked what he thought of polygamy. Prompted by what they considered a divine revelation, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints discontinued the practice more than a century ago, and the church distances itself from polygamist "fundamentalists." But Romney went one step further, saying he couldn't "imagine anything more awful than polygamy." Many Mormons were privately taken aback. Mormons believe that, in its time, "plural marriage" was a commandment from God, and they are, as a group, fiercely proud of their ancestors, hundreds of whom practiced polygamy. (Romney's own great-grandfather had five wives.) LDS church members loathe the polygamy stereotypes and jokes bandied by outsiders. But hearing Romney—the most recognizable face of their faith these days—disavow it in those terms was mildly unsettling to LDS insiders.

Others were puzzled to hear Romney say he reads the Gideon Bible—a version popular with evangelicals: Mormons uniformly study the King James version, in a Salt Lake edition that is cross-referenced to all other Mormon scripture. "Seems like he just figured he had to say the safest, most Protestant thing he could think of—that was kind of annoying," says Russell Arben Fox, a Mormon professor of political science at Friends University in Wichita, Kans.

{Treacly voice}Sometimes we have to answer the question that SHOULD have been asked.

I don’t know that much about fundamentalist doctrine. But, to the extent they acknowledge Christ as their Savior, they are also Christians.

Do you KNOW how close YOU are to being EXCOMMUNICATED from LDS, Inc.!?

Gideon Bibles are put in Hotels, true

They are also yearly given out at High Schools and Junior colleges.

They are also given out at Hospitals and Doctor’s offices

Also at prisons, at San Quentin they go their once a month to give them to the new arrivals (1000+ a month.) New Testaments are given out at the schools and prisons.

They are also given out at County Jails, and Gideons also sometimes do Bible Studies at prisons and jails.

They used to use exclusively the KJV, but now use the NKJV version and others.

I was with the Gideons for quite some time in the past.

Anyone anytime can request a Gideon Bible, and one will be given to them.

Many people think if they take a Gideon Bible from a hotel that they are stealing it. That is not true. Anyone is free to take one from a hotel anytime they wish.

The Nicene Creed was never preached by Christ. The Biblical passage which supposedly provides the best support for it, the Johannine Comma, was inserted by a monk into the Vulgate verions hundreds of years after Christ, as every serious Biblical scholar acknowledges.

Christ explained what “oneness” meant in his intercessory prayer in John 17:20-23:

“Neither pray I for these alone, but for them also which shall believe on me through their word;

That they all may be one; as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us: that the world may believe that thou has sent me.

And the glory which thou gavest me I have given them; that they may be one, even as we are one;

I in them, and thou in me, that they may be made perfect in one; and that the world may know that thou hast sent me, and hast loved them, as thou has loved me.”

I realize you are saying we started it, OK, did your side call names or not. It's a simple question, and if they did, how does that Square with the logic of "Calling people names means your argument is weak". Inquiring minds want to know.

Then KNOW this. My contention is that Mormonism, is a false doctrine hatched in the pits of hell. Started by a con man (kid)who had a history of deception. I call no one adhereing to this false religion any other name than "one who is deceived by the evil one". I will continue to call Mormonism a cult. I will also continue to refer to those holding to it's beliefs as children of God led astray in latter times, just as our Saviour warned us. If I have ever in my zeal of discussion slipped into anything that you or anyone else took as name calling, I apologize. I will not however apologize for calling Mormonism a false and damning belief.

We believe we are all spirit children of our Father in Heaven.

John saw it a LOT different:

John Chapter One

12. Yet to all who received him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God--
13. children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband's will, but born of God.

Believed: not believed and WORKED.

Why, after this alleged visitation, three years later Smith sought to join one of these apostate churches?

That's a good question. Why was that?

I was talking about polygamist “fundamentalist” doctrine.

Those folks who actually BELIEVE and follow the precepts found in Doctrine & Covenants 132?

Question: Are all "Mormons" "Mormons"--whether or not "fundamentalist" is tagged on as a qualifier?

Fundamentalists do not like to be called Momrons, so we and they agree, you are the one trying to put a label on them, why?

(2) When we object to our alleged "apostate" spiritual graveyard status, too many LDS don't ever seem to have qualms about pushing us out of our "home" identity as "Christians." (Please note the endless stream of LDS insinuations/accusations that if we "dare" even try to establish any definitional "boundaries" as to what a "Christian" is we are acting in some "self-righteous" manner).

Well, you are, you are taking a faith and treating it like religion. You cannot decide that I don't believe in Jesus when I am saying I do, You can say I'm not a Methodist, or a baptist, or Catholic, etc. for those are churches, and you can control membership to them (if you are running the Church). Jesus is in charge of who is his and you are not him. We see anyone who is judging others as a son of perdition like the one spoken of in 2 Thes. 2: 3 - 4
3 Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition;
4 Who aopposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped; so that he as God sitteth in the temple of God, shewing himself that he is God.
Mormons have been slapped with these scriptures so often we will be sensitive to those who slap us with them appearing to do EXACTLY what they accuse us of, Yep we'll call you on it.

(And I have some Fundamentalist Friends, my bishop talks to me about it every time I get my temple recommend renewed...)

When Jesus said “It is finished,” he was referring to his earthly life and mission. Just because your pastors read a different meaning into this statement doesn’t mean I have to accept it to be a Christian. If everything was “finished” when he uttered that sentence, why did there need to be a resurrection?

Excellent point!

You wouldn’t be a Protestant unless your forebears hadn’t rejected Catholicism as “corrupt.”

Number 14...

How Mormon's deal with data presented to them by those they call ANTI's:

  1. How you interpret it is wrong...
  2. You are too ignorant to really understand it because you are not a member....
  3. You're not qualified to judge because you're no LONGER a member...
  4. You are just a bigot for bringing the whole ugly truth to light ...
  5. So’s yer Mama!
  6. Laugh it all off and post some silly image.
  7. Jump down the rabbit hole; Alice!
  8. Bait & Switch
  9. The OTHER 'half' of the truth is what we are avoiding.
10. "I Know It When I See It"
11. Hand waving...
12. YOU play defense for a while.
13. HEE Hee hee... let's get the Calvinists and the Armenians fighting!
14. GREAT FUN! Let's get the Catholics and the Protestants fighting!
15. Huh? Did you say something?
16. If I repeat this enough times some folks will be fooled into thinking it's true.
17. Playing dumb.
18. Refusing to answer because your ATTITUDE offends them.

I don’t know that much about fundamentalist doctrine

Therein lies a dilemma...
And the crux of the problem...

I have friends who are fundamentalist, What do you want to know?

(You can ask privately, and if I don't know, I can ask...)
