In his book, Good News about Sex and Marriage, he asserts that the Church's teaching on sex and marriage is good news because it's the truth about love and true love is the fulfillment of the human person. He also admits that the news is challenging. "This is so because the truth about love is always challenging."

Good summary. Christian love always requires dying to yourself, laying down your life for others.

One of the Eucharistic Prayers begins the consecration, "Before He was given up to death, a death He freely accepted ...". I always get a chill, because I know how I fail in "freely accepting" the ways I'm called to die to self.

I encourage people to learn about the sympto-thermal method of child-spacing. It is not rhythm. It has 3 basic aspects to it, and zero side effects. It is very effective for child spacing, but is not intended to alter an open relationship with God. Women who have been married several years are often able to identify the onset of ovulation with only one of the three factors.

It is also part of an open attitude towards human life. Yet, it does permit husband and wife to delay and/or space children according to their personal and unique circumstances.

“May you have MANY children” USED to be a blessing!

I have a coffee cup (and I gave them to some of my friends :-), that says:

Health and long life to you,
Land without rent to you,
A child a year to you,
And may you die in Ireland.

I don’t have a baby this year (as I have every even-numbered year for a long time) because of needing to assist my parents, and I feel very sad about it.

I have six siblings. Growing up (and going to Catholic school), I thought of us as a “medium-sized” family, as there were families with 10 and 11 kids in the parish.

“It is not rhythm. It has 3 basic aspects to it, and zero side effects.”

No side effects?

Well...for some of it who followed it to a “T” - and still wound up pregnant (3 pregnancies since learning the method) I beg to differ.

Granted - our situation is probably unusual, and this method probably works for many people....But -there does come a time for some people when “enough is enough”.

I would never consider the pill - but I am considering other alternatives.

Babies are not side effects.

Cervical cancer, high blood pressure, and infertility are side effects of contaception.

Oh, and I would be interested in seeing a study on the relationship between vasectomies and prostate infections/cancer.

“Babies are not side effects.”

True...but I see a tendency to sell the method as being foolproof. Well, it isn’t.
And so - people are being told - use NFP - it is easy and effective!
Well - it may be for some folks and not for others.
One size does not fit all.

Like I said...there does come a time when enough is enough, and to go beyond that point can be dangerous.

“Cervical cancer, high blood pressure, and infertility are side effects of contaception.”

While conraception (I assume you are referring to the pill) does not “cause” cervical cancer - it can encourage the type of behavior that does contribute to it.
Any hormonal based contraception will have dangerous side effects - including the danger of being an abortificant.
No argument here on that.

“Oh, and I would be interested in seeing a study on the relationship between vasectomies and prostate infections/cancer.”

I’m sure that must have been explored - I have not come across info on that suggesting a link.

Prostate cancer is correllated with vasectomy, although I don’t recall whether the report mentioned a causal hypothesis. Cervical cancer is linked to hormonal contraception use by more than promiscuity: some of the studies have shown that the hormonal drugs increase the likelihood of viral infection and/or the probability of the infections’ leading to cancer.

Babies are the reason we have genital organs and the desire to use them.

I don’t know many couples of our age with more children than I have (eight), but I often run into people my age or older who come from families of ten or more children. This was farm country not that long ago :-). The older ladies are especially happy to see all my children, especially when we’re working the polls on election day!

“Prostate cancer is correllated with vasectomy,”

I didn’t know that - but that wasn’t “on the table” anyway.

“some of the studies have shown that the hormonal drugs increase the likelihood of viral infection and/or the probability of the infections’ leading to cancer.”

Didn’t know that either, but that type of thing was ruled out a long time ago as well.

“Babies are the reason we have genital organs and the desire to use them.”

Really? Wow!
Thanks for the great wisdom there, as I must obviously have the intellect of a 3 yr. old!

Thanks ...all my problems are now solved!

I’m known for stating the obvious. It’s probably because I spend all my time with kids!

LOL!

Sorry for being so snarky!
I’m 7 months pregnant and I’m already waddling.
Contributes to the crankiness.

No harm, no foul. My husband occasionally has to remind me that he’s not one of the kids :-).

Hang in there!

“My husband occasionally has to remind me that he’s not one of the kids :-).”

LOL.
My hubby works with kids all day, and I often tell him “what are you going to do? suspend me? call my parents? C’mon tough guy! What are you gonna do?”

My 6-year-old will say, “You told me ‘No,’ and that upsets me! You’re grounded!” Then I pick him up by his feet and bounce him on his head a few times and say, “Oh, really? You and what army?”

““You told me ‘No,’ and that upsets me! You’re grounded!””

Ahh...my five year old has that attitude.

““Oh, really? You and what army?””

An excellent line from Shrek!
