Anglican archbishop gives Pope ‘Holy Grail’ beer

p>Vatican City, Jan 29, 2008 / 10:15 pm (CNA).- The Anglican Archbishop of York presented a gift of beer to Pope Benedict XVI on his recent trip to the Vatican, the York Press reports.

Archbishop of York John Sentamu, visiting Rome to celebrate the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity, presented the Pope with an illustrated history of York Minster and a cut-glass beer tankard from the Minster.

He also gave to the Pope two Yorkshire beers, Holy Grail beer and Black Sheep Ale from the Black Sheep Brewery.

Archbishop Sentamu said the gifts were chosen to reflect the Pope’s appreciation for Bavarian beer. The gifts pleased the Pope, who is Bavarian by birth and prefers beer to wine and water, according to The Guardian.

The Archbishop of York is the second-highest-ranking prelate in the Church of England, second only to the Archbishop of Canterbury.

I hope some of our UK friends can weigh in on whether that beer is any good.

I’ll add that I’ve consumed a huge quantity of beer, over there, and it was all good.

“That’s the Spirit!” ping!

(Okay, it’s not vino, but it’s the Pope and the quirky Anglican Archbishop of York.)

I often wish I liked beer, because there are so many neat varieties!

I rarely drink beer, but I think Pope Benedict might want to enjoy one once in a while. It’s good for the heart, and possibly even the soul. :)

That’s what Benjamin Franklin said, “Beer is proof that God loves us and wants us to be happy.”

Well, yes ... most of what I drank, over there, was indeed labeled "ale".

Except for the Guinness.

I hate beer but I love the smell. It just seems that something that smells that good would taste good too. I thought the same thing about Ivory soap when I was a kid and I learned really fast. YUK!

Blacksheep is a pretty good drop of ale. There are quite a few good independent breweries in Yorkshire.

I like the smell of ale and other strong beer - it reminds me of whole-grain bread dough!

However, ordinary beer smells more like cat pee.

Spent most of my time in Wiltshire ... seemed every pub had a few imports, a few national labels, and a few 'house' labels ... I usually tried the house labels.

Had one smashing good time, when not working. (Work went pretty well, too.)
