The attack on Mahony occurred in July ...... So why is this story being released now?

News of the assault comes as the bulk of the church's $660million settlement with victims began being paid out Monday

The attack on Mahony occurred in July near Our Lady of the Angels Cathedral in downtown Los Angeles, and it took the cardinal about a month to heal, said the Rev. Sal Pilato, principal at Junipero Serra Catholic High School in Gardena. They certainly kept this a close secret.
This is the first I've heard of it, and I've read many Mahony-related articles in the intervening months.

My guess is because it never happened — just showman Mahony figuring he needs the “sympathy vote” just about now. Isn’t the abuse thing heating up again in LA?

So why is this story being released now? Presumably so the adulation of Mahony expressed in this article could be timed to coincide with the settlement he negotiated.

Obviously this great, highly-respected prelate is in great danger. It would be best if he retires early for his own safety.

He apparently decided not to go public with the assault, and Los Angeles Police Department officials said they were unaware of any such incident.
One wonders what the man who assaulted him actually said....There are other reasons Mahony may not have wanted to go to the police than out of sense of altruism as is indicated here.
"Roger Mahony's name hasn't been mentioned around here," LAPD Lt. Roger Mora said Monday.
That's a strange comment. It's almost as if he left unsaid, "--at least not as the victim of a crime."
All that said, I'd much prefer to see Cardinal Mahoney resign than get beaten up. I'll leave the judging of him to Almighty God. I just want him out of the way so that the good people of the LA archdiocese can get back on the path to Faith and Truth.

The BS meter is pegged.
God forgive me, but I don’t buy this for a second. Where’s the police report? Wouldn’t it be sinful not to seek civil justice against your attacker? I’m not talking about forgiveness. People can be forgiven and still be punished.
The pope’s assassin was forgiven but the Vatican still saw that he was brought to justice.

PRAYER FOR HOLY PRIESTS
O my Jesus, I thank Thee, that Thou art truly, actually, and substantially, human and divine,
present here in the mystery of the Sacrament of the Altar.
Thou hast said, "Ask and you shall receive, seek and you shall find, knock and it shall be opened to you."
See, Lord, I come and knock. I ask Thee:
Send us holy priests!
O my Jesus, Thou hast said: "Whatever you ask the Father in MY Name, it shall be granted you."
See, Lord, in Thy Name I ask Thy Father the grace:
Send us holy priests!
O my Jesus, Thou hast said: "Heaven and earth shall pass away but My Word shall not pass away."
See, Lord, in trust of the infallibility of Thy Word, I ask Thee:
Send us holy priests!
Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, I trust in Thee!
Please bless Thy priests!
Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, it is not possible for Thee to have no sympathy for us wretches.
Have mercy on us sinners, and grant us through the threefold full of grace, beautiful, and
Immaculate Heart of Mary, Thy Mother and ours, the grace to which we pray to Thee. Amen.
O Mary, Queen of the clergy, pray for us:
obtain for us many holy priests.
O Lord, grant unto Thy Church saintly priests and fervent religious.
Send forth, O Lord, laborers into Thy harvest.
O Lord, grant us priests!
O Lord, grant us holy priests!
O Lord, grant us many holy priests!
O Lord, grant us many holy religious vocations!
Pope Saint Pius X, pray for us.

The Rev. Joseph Shea, pastor of Holy Family Catholic Church in Glendale, sees Mahony's reaction to the attack as Christ-like. Please Father, get a grip on reality. Comparing bruises to what Our Lord endured is pathetic. I won't say this assault didn't happen, but the whole thing sounds fishy. Reading through the whole article there is just too much "said several priests who did not want to be identified." Why not? Sounds to me like Phony Mahony is playing for sympathy, right out of the Clinton playbook.

Right. I've got to add a Mahoney countdown meter to my blog.
