Sitting in sight of her father and grandfather, both Lutheran ministers, Jen Rude on Saturday became the first ordained lesbian pastor since the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America urged bishops to not penalize congregations who violate the celibacy requirement for gay clergy.
Several of the more than 100 congregants present wept as the 27-year-old stood before them, a beaming smile drawn across her face.
Under church policy, homosexual ministers are required to make a vow of celibacy before they can be ordained. But heterosexual ministers are not, and Rude, who is not in a relationship, refused to make that vow because she considers the policy discriminatory.
"We all realized that sexual orientation has nothing to do with how well a person can minister a congregation," said Kathy Young, a member of the Resurrection Lutheran Church in Lakeview, where the ordination was held.
Young was absolute about the decision to violate church policy by ordaining Rude: "This is who we are and this is what we do."

Where are we going, and why are we in this handbasket?
Now that's far beyond Rude...
The fact she’s light in the loafers isn’t even relevant.
Women are forbidden from being ordained per scripture.
Was there ever any doubt that they would cave?
Calling that which is Evil Good is what it is all about.
And making the call in the name of God is worst of all.
Doesn't refusal to take an oath not to engage in sinful activity reflect on how well a person can minister to a Christian congregation?
She must believe in what one writer called "iPod" theology - you just download the parts you like and agree with, and disregard the rest...like the qualifications for a pastor.

Mainline Protestantism, except maybe for the Baptists, is becoming morally bankrupt.
The Catholics talk a good game, but then can't, or wont, weed out the perverts.
I believe we are in "the great falling away".
Europe, the cradle of Christianity, is fast becoming "post-christian",
and it looks like we're right behind them.
The Baptists certainly have held there own but I wouldn't say they aren't heading there. Gay couples trigger debate at church (Southern Baptist - Fort Worth)
Don't understand why there's a "debate".

Of course, I could be wrong, and have been many times, but this story seems very much like so many other stories appearing in the secondary headlines of newspapers and tv news broadcasts. If there is such a thing as ‘handwriting on the wall,’ these stories might be it. Christianity, as most of us have known it, looks to be on the way out. Certainly, as basic principles and beliefs are cast aside for ‘innovations,’ the faith, itself, undergoes serious changes. Will the old believers accept those changes? Not likely. Will newcomers accept them? Maybe, but what they will be accepting will be something other than what it once was.
Lutheran (ELCA) Ping!
Compounded to her own blasphemous sin is the blasphemies that her congregation are now exposed to, and part of.
She’s a ship sinking to hell, and will drag down the souls of her “followers” with her.
And what liturgical color is yelloworangeredgreen?
If this story has a happy ending, it’s ‘round the bend where I can’t see it.
Fruitcake season?
Not in the church of moral relativism.
