At least I’m not alone! Yes, Comcast apparently counts EWTN as “local access programming” for reasons best known to itself. OTOH, Boston Catholic TV — sounds “local” to me, right? — (under the iron fist of Cdl. O’ Malley no doubt) gets its own channel. Go figure!

Hopefully, they have a tape of it which was independent of the satellite.

I'm sure they did. The FSSP and EWTN probably recorded it so they can sell DVDs of it later on.

In that case, I expect they will transmit a “clean” copy this afternoon. Better set the recorder now... :)

The break up in the transmission right after the consecration of the Precious Blood was so clearly the work of the Evil One that you could practically hear the voices of the demons raging in the background! But as usual, they didn’t win, and the power of the Cross made them flee.

However, I think it reminds us of the opposition that we are going to face. Every attempt will be made by Satan to prevent the Mass of the Ages from coming back; sadly, a lot of bishops and others are being used as pawns in this and don’t even realize who’s using them. But I do think it means that people celebrating this Mass or associated with it in any way have to be prepared for all sorts of opposition and obstacles - but confident that none of them will succeed!

Well, I’ve still got EWTN 24/7 in Plymouth for the moment, at least. Comcast down here recently moved it to the end of the menu, with a channel number (78) that is several removed for being in order with the main barrel of channels. That implies to me that it may not be long before it is bumped off the menu completely. BCTV is on our menu too, but no one watches it anywhere in the archdiocese. It’s too dull, watered-down and irrelevant for most people’s tastes.

Has EWTN said what its plans are for the extraordinary form? Are they going to use it regularly?

(Funny aside: my Episcopal friends have lived with Rite I and Rite II for almost 20 years. Now, if effect, we’re doing the same!)

I don't know how long the break was. As I said, I was watching TV -- until it changed to Spike TV. When I tried to get on the computer (took me a few minutes to remember I could watch on computer, because I couldn't on my old one!), it came up with some kind of flowing red drape and said "technical difficulties." In a bit, I tried Windows Player, and got the same thing. I went and had a cup of tea and came back and tried again. But by then it was close to the end. So I'm not even sure the TV transmission had problems. Is it the same "feed" or whatever? I know nothing about the technical side of this, you understand.

I don't think there has been any announcement as of yet, but I know some of the Franciscans down at EWTN have been trained to say it by the FSSP. We might see it once a week, live from the Shrine of the Blessed Sacrament. That's my hope at least.

It never occurred to me to pray for the successful satellite transmission of the Mass, but I guess from now on, that should be a main focus of our prayers. I was just so happy that it was being broadcast, and was thinking about myself and how much I would love it, that I never thought that there might be problems with the transmission. I really shouldn’t have been so surprised.

LOL! Doesn't surprise me -- I didn't even know it was there until just now, when I was checking the list to see what other stations had that sharing arrangment!

Yes. Our forty years of wandering around in the liturgical desert are just about over. But, before we cross the Jordan, Satan will throw everything he has at us to keep us from wading on over.

See my post 19. It was while the Celebrant was raising the Cup with the Precious Blood that the signal started breaking up. They finally got it fixed during the Deacon’s Confiteor (I think). I was looking for the place in my booklet and heard a couple of saints’ names, then I heard the Celebrant say “absolutionem.” Right after that was the Communion.

What a wonderful day to start the extraordinary tradition, The Exaltation of the Cross!

The part I saw, though, was beautiful. I thought the sermon was excellent! :)

Thanks. It sounds like they did the “second Confiteor.” I’ve only been to a couple of Solemn High Masses before, and can’t recall if the second Confiteor and second Absolution are done during an SHM (I would kind of doubt that they suddenly appear in the Missale just for Solemn High Mass). But, in the normal High Mass, in the 1962 missal, they are “officially” omitted. A lot of indult Masses have done them anyway (I believe there was an allowance for this), including where I go. In a normal High Mass (”Missa Cantata”) the span of time from the consecration to the absolution would be about 5-7 minutes, depending on the speed of the priest. I would assume that another minute or two would be needed in an SHM. For anybody who watched: does a 6-8 minute gap in the transmission sound about right?

The sermon was given by Fr. Calvin Goodwin, FSSP. He is on the faculty of the FSSP seminary in Nebraska. He also has frequent articles in Latin Mass Magazine.

I was able to watch the Mass from home until the sermon. Then I had to leave for work. But I taped the whole Mass. I will check the recording when I get home and might re-record it if the technical difficulties prove to be too annoying.

The demons are trying to sabotage this transmission.

I think this particular Demon is named Humberto, or what's left of it as it speeds toward the East.

If you will go here:

http://www.ewtn.com/library/papaldoc/b16SPindex.htm

you will be able to pull up the link to the Mass booklet that was used, so that you can look through it to see what was in the Canon. I guess it was a Second Confiteor and Absolution. The rubrics indicated that the Deacon says it. The blank space was several pages (according to the booklet) and the time span was probably more than 8 minutes because it included the Pater Noster and Agnus Dei, which came before the Second Confiteor.

If you have EWTN, you should really watch it or tape it when it is replayed at 6 pm and midnight Eastern. It’ll bring back some memories. ;-)

It never occurred to me to pray for the successful satellite transmission of the Mass, but I guess from now on, that should be a main focus of our prayers.

March 8, 1981
Just before the first satellite dish arrived, Sr. Regina had a vision in which she saw a black sky, a white satellite dish, and a flame emerging from the center. She heard God say, "This is my network, and it will glorify my Son." After the dish arrived a few weeks later, a photograph taken while it was installed reproduced Sr. Regina's vision: a black sky, the white dish, and a red flame emerging from its center. Professional photographers could not account for the red flame. Mother Angelica called it a miracle.

Thank you, Mother Angelica!
