On September 8, at the 59th Annual Creative Arts Emmy Awards, comedian Kathy Griffin won Outstanding Reality Program for her Bravo show, My Life on the D-List. In her acceptance speech, Griffin said, Suck it, Jesus, this award is my God now. Fox will televise the Primetime Emmy Awards on Sunday, September 16 from the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles.
Catholic League president Bill Donohue responded as follows:
Mel Gibson. Michael Richards. Isaiah Washington. Imus. Jerry Lewis. Every time a celebrity offends a segment of the population, he pays a price, in one way or another. The question now is whether Kathy Griffin will pay a similar price for her outburst. And as we have learned, her verbal assault was calculated.
In an interview with Houstons gay magazine, OutSmart, Griffin described herself as a complete militant atheist. Unfortunately, her kind of vulgar in-your-face brand of hate speech found a receptive audience on Saturday: The Hollywood Reporter says her foul remark drew laughs.
It is incumbent upon Dick Askin, chairman and chief executive officer of the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences, to denounce Griffins obscene and blasphemous comment; a statement should also be read on Sunday. After all, it is his organization that is responsible for the Creative Arts Emmy event. Moreover, given the way the Hollywood crowd received Griffins remark, it falls to Askin to distance the Academy from this outrageous incident. We are contacting Griffins agent as well.
It is sure bet that if Griffin had said, Suck it, Muhammad, there would have been a very different reaction from the crowd and from the media who covered this event. To say nothing of the Muslim reaction.

I feel sorry for her as she has no idea what she has done. The time will come when she realizes and by then it will be too late.
You know - you're right. As the Book of Ecclesiastes reminds us - "everything old is new again".
Wow; I had no idea that this wasn’t a post-op tranny.
Imagine the inner ugliness if this is the best that plastic surgery can do.
Both her parents are practicing Catholics. She had them in her show quite a bit and you can tell that they struggle to love and support her. She even says comments like in the article to them to get a rise out of them or to just simply verbally slap them in the face. Kathy is very bitter hate filed human being. Every garbage that comes out of her mouth is negative and uncharitable. She needs a lot of help and a whole lot of prayer.
I accidently saw a few minutes of one of her shows where she went to Iraq - she couldn't even get a laugh out of the men and women there who were hungry for some sort of entertainment.
Stupid is as stupid does.
and she has one now? not
Her father passed away, which was used very visibly in one of the new season’s shows. This, I’m sure, is what garnered her Emmy. She used her show to disperse her father’s ashes too, wherein her mother was not present if I recall correctly.
It was just awful, using her father’s death for ratings.
As to a previous poster’s comments about her being an athiest, I just wanted to add that most athiests I’ve ever met aren’t athiests at all. They’re anti-thiests. They believe in God, they’re just against Him.
I came accross this web page by accident and it made me sad to read most of these posts. Christians are not the judge, God is. God knows Kathy, we don’t. It is between God and Kathy. Why am I reading such mean things where I thought I would find people saying ‘I will pray for Kathy’. I wish Kathy success and happiness and hope that she finds her way. God Bless all of you.
Well...to her credit. At least she’s honest! Even though I have no idea who she is (I haven’t watched television in almost a year) I now know to avoid anything that she’s in from now on. Oh, does anyone know when she’s planning to go into rehab with Ms. Lohan?

More judge not nonsense?
Judging her actions is perfectly valid, and her actions are disgusting.
I think this is extremely sad. One day she either will use those words as part of her testimony to the life change that JESUS will do in her life, or she will be tormented by those words for all eternity.
I pray for her soul, that God will have mercy on her. She obviously is a very sad person, which reflectss most people in Hollywood. The only reason she was able to get laughs is because Hollywood has conditioned them, like cattle, to react to anti-god sentiments or in this case, Anti-Christian statements. May God invoke his Spirit to change the hearts of those in Hollywood.
A revolting publicity stunt, and publicity stunt it was.
Just what is it that she's famous for, except for being a D-list celebrity? And what will she do when she is no longer famous? Fame is fleeting, but G_d is eternal.
She doesn't, however, have any courage and if she did, she would have said 'Mohammed' rather than 'Jesus.' You know, those folks don't turn the other cheek as well.
Someone else mentioned this - I think her punishment is that she is Kathy Griffin.
You are absolutely right. Why would she tell Jesus to “suck it” when she believes he doesn’t even exist? It’s either she believes he exists and has great disdain for him, or she was just doing this to get a rise out of Christians.
Sadly, it is considered cool to badmouth Jesus today. You are praised if you are of a different faith such as Buddhism or Islam or of no faith, and you are bashed if you are a devout Christian.
Kathy Griffin is another Catholic gone far astray. She needs a lot of prayers that she finds God sometime before the end of her life.
E! has said that they are going to edit her acceptance speech when it airs it.
“The Academy of Television Arts & Sciences said Monday that the acceptance speech the My Life on the D-List star made for winning a Creative Arts Primetime Emmy for Outstanding Reality Program will be edited for content when the ceremony airs Saturday on E!”
